Easy-Medium Class, Nice Professor, Relaxed Environment Pros: The crop of the week content in the quizzes came directly from the lab manual, which was very helpful. We always had adequate time to look over the seeds and crops we'd need to identify for quizzes. The labs were engaging and low-stress. I felt like I had adequate time to get to know people in my group and in the lab. Dr. Phillips is extremely understanding of students' situations. In the case of our class, Dr. Phillips would always end lecture 10 mins early to make sure students had enough time to walk to the greenhouse, where lab is. In the schedule of classes, PLSC113 had been listed as being in the plant sciences building instead of the greenhouse, so Dr. Phillips made sure labs always ended 10 mins earlier to allow students to get to their next class. In general, labs tended to run short anyways, which was nice. Cons: Sometimes the crops and seeds we'd have to identify on the quizzes looked different from what we'd studied. Ie. the plants had grown and matured to a different stage or the seeds would be a different color, but we usually got points back on this. Quiz questions are pretty specific, so prepare to look over and study the crops of the week. Luckily, all that info is clearly outlined in the lab manual. The lab is a bit harder to get good grades on than the class because the questions are so specific.

Easy Class, Nice Professor, Short Exams Dr. Phillips is extremely understanding of students' situations. For example, when he discovered the lab manual was like $40 in the bookstore, he gave us the pdf of the lab manual on elms. Students are allowed and encouraged to ask questions during class and the content is always explained clearly. Classes don't tend to run long or short and we cover all material in the slides. I felt like the textbook readings weren't necessary to do well on the quizzes and exams, even though there were assigned readings. Honestly, I don't have any real complaints about this class.

Great professor for the 3-credit course (PLSC112), but I would not recommend taking the lab (PLSC113) alongside it. PLSC112 was a manageable course overall, with weekly online quizzes and exams that weren't too difficult. The hybrid format was nice, especially since there were no classes on Fridays. However, I struggled with the lab. It was very unorganized, and my lab group and I were often left confused about what we were supposed to be doing. The quizzes in the lab were challenging, especially since we had to identify different types of crops and seeds that were often unclear and only shown to us once before being quizzed. Lab time was chaotic, and we frequently didn't know what to do, which made completing the lab reports difficult. Overall, I’d recommend the lecture portion of the class but would suggest avoiding the lab if possible.

PLSC101 is an intro class for a lot of the agriculture majors, but it is also a popular lab science to fulfill gen eds. Dr. Philips completely recognizes this and doesn't push a ton of memorization of the extensive knowledge. His lectures are a bit boring because the information is dry, but he does his best to make them interesting and tells you he is trying. He does not take attendance, but will sometimes give out extra credit on Friday's to the people who are there. 2-3 midterms that are basically memorization, and a non cumulative final that has the same weight as every other exam. He will tell you that as a student he hated having insanely weighted finals. He is a really understanding guy, and has a lot of knowledge. No other homework assignments or papers or projects of any kind. The lab is pretty simple, there are a few "exams" that are basically being able to identify different types of plants and give some facts about them. All the information is given to you and is very straightforward. Super fun, not too hard, as long as you put in a bit of time to study for exams.
