Professor Ponce is an okay professor teaching a really, really terrible course. ENME382 is a roller-coaster ride with a bad textbook and a ton of material, taught at a mile a minute. During the first few lectures I genuinely could not move my pencil fast enough to keep up with the slides, and from the dazed looks on my classmates’ faces, it seems like they couldn’t either. It wasn’t long before most of the class stopped coming to lectures - probably to no fault of professor Ponce. From what I’ve heard, other sections had the same problem. While Ponce is a nice guy who generally is pretty helpful, the class itself seems designed to be unhelpful. Case in point, the professors for this class refused to post the solutions to the practice exams they posted, which seemed to defeat the point of having practice exams to begin with. Honestly, that sums up how this course feels pretty well - simultaneously having a lot to do and somehow also not really knowing any of it. While I am certainly indebted to Professor Ponce for helping me through a number of particularly sticky homework problems, he never seemed particularly interested in teaching this class (not that I blame him). While the material might be interesting, the course absolutely is not. If you take Ponce, I’d recommend reading the lecture slides on your own time and asking him questions if you need help. All in all, he’s not the worst guy to ride a roller coaster with - the roller coaster itself just blows. |

nice guy, and i felt like the course was fairly straightforward. although this semester, our TA graded most of the work such as lab reports and notebooks, and our TA was pretty fair in grading, so this might vary if Ponce himself is grading it (he is 100% going to be more harsh on grading). Make sure you look over the lab report and notebook rubrics carefully so that you meet every requirement because the lab reports are 50% of the grade and the notebooks are 20%. theres a small exam that was also fairly easy, and an oral presentation at the end. make sure you know your experiment for that thoroughly because you will get grilled and feel miserable if you dont, but the grading for that wasnt very harsh (10%). we didnt have anything like 95% for an A but it could be different based on the distribution. good luck! |

I had lecture online and lab in person. Online lectures were pointless - would have much preferred a recording. Dr. Ponce would require cameras on for zoom, which no professor should ever require. All he would do is just read off the slides, and overall not a good lecture experience. There was a lot of down time during lab, but lab was fine. Grading was frustrating - refused to give anyone an A unless they received over 95. He also refused to release grades until everyone submitted course evaluations, meaning we could not actual evaluate his grading. Unfortunately this course is required. |

Very nice guy, somewhat easy grader. Will help you with the class and can be a good resource down the line |
