This course is the weirdest yet easiest course I've taken at UMD. Dr. Prather is a nice guy, but I feel like the course is almost too chill. The lecture really consists of Dr. Prather just talking through his slides for ~50 minutes, and then letting us go. The lectures are pretty boring, and not many people show up to class. The entire course is just writing a ~10 page paper, and throughout the semester there are almost no assignments, and I probably spent ~10 hours on the work total. The midterm was online and so easy that the median grade on it was 100. If you just want an A and don't care about anything else then take him, but if you want to learn as much as possible definitely don't lol. |

Really easy class if you know how to write a research paper. He doesn't really give grades or feedback though. |

It's a chill class like others have said. His presentations/lessons can be boring (I've spaced out a lot) because he just yaps about either his research process that can help with yours (he's a researcher so he knows the entire process in which you're essentially doing throughout the whole class). The textbook is free (he provides the PDF version) and essentially if you follow the textbook, you'll know how to do the assignments. Honestly after the first couple weeks attendance dropped by half and has stayed that way—not sure if attendance is part of the grade/mandatory he didn't really go over that during syllabus day. Every time we've submitted a part of our research paper as the assignment, it's not graded and we don't receive any feedback when it says we'll receive feedback. You have to either go to office hours or talk to him before or after class to receive the feedback you need because he (and the TA) is not gonna provide it for you on Canvas. I'm only estimating I'll get an A because of the midterm and feedback I've actually received from him talking to him. No in-class assignments (except when you brainstorm your research proposal topic) and one midterm that's fairly easy and open-note. |
