Never in my years at UMD have I experienced a professor as TERRIBLE as this. I've always done well in my CCJS classes but she is hands-down the worst professor in the CCJS department. She does not care about students, has no sympathy, is unapproachable, and rude. She's a very harsh grader and does not convey her expectations clearly. Not a single student got full points on any assignment or exam besides the quizzes. She scheduled our second exam the day before Thanksgiving break which made it much more stressful, and the exam questions were so random and hard it doesn't matter how much you study. Assignments were often too group-focused, I rarely felt like I had control over my own grade and had to rely on others. We did not have nearly enough time to complete the quizzes, which also did not reflect class material. DO NOT take a class with Professor Price. |

Professor Price is a nice person, but her lectures aren't great. She covers a lot of what's in the textbook, but her slides aren't good and are a little disorganized. My main issue with her is that her exams were largely not based on the content of her lectures but on obscure random facts in the textbook or confusingly-worded questions about applying the concepts. The first exam's average was in the mid 60s, which shouldn't be the case for an intro class that should be largely memorization. I think she had good intent for this class and is definitely very experienced in the criminal justice system, but this class was not great. |

I personally didn't have as much of an issue with her as some of the other reviewers, and found her lectures straightforward. It is true that we had to read a chapter of the textbook for every lecture and that we got tested mainly on the text, but I didn't think it was too much. When I struggled to understand/remember some terms from the lecture, the discussions were helpful and some of the exam questions were similar or the same as what's asked in the biweekly quizzes. They were all multiple choice and true/false questions, so that made things easier as well. I do agree, however, that her policies are strict and the timing of assignments are not the most ideal. Even with accommodations, I felt like I wouldn't be accommodated adequately in the event of an emergency if it's not "serious" enough, so if you have anything in your personal life that could complicate your schedule, I wouldn't recommend her. That aside, she's decent. |

Pros: - You have no homework (besides textbook reading) Cons: - Gave us an in-person exam the Monday before Thanksgiving - Doesn't post the slides and will yell at you in class if you take a picture of her slides Overall, she's an ok professor. I didn't love her but I didn't hate her. |

The class was overall pretty interesting, and she was a decently good professor. Despite the exam the Monday before Thanksgiving, I have personally found very little issues with the structure and schedule of the class. She does often read off the slides, but will sometimes add some information that is interesting in addition to what is being discussed. So long as you take the time to at least skim the chapters and listen/go to lecture and discussion, the course is really not bad and you are able to get an A/B. Although I would not recommend if you have zero interest in criminology, if you're looking for a fairly straightforward elective that you are willing to dedicate a few hours a week to, it is not bad. It is important to note she is strict with policies, you can not take pictures of her slides for "copyright" and generally is pretty final about making up things, but taking notes is fairly easy with the pace and I have personally never had issue with making up an assignment. Overall, work is a little much for an elective but she is pretty kind and definitely a little strict, but this is unsurprising considering her background. |

Very unaccommodating for an intro-level class. The average for the first exam was in the low 70s. She expects you to read 50+ page chapters before class and have them memorized. She doesn't test you on lecture slides, but instead on details from the book. She doesn't allow you to take pictures of the slides even if she speaks fast. Asks for a lot for a 100-level class. Would not recommend |

Never have I ever wanted to wish the worst on a professor, yet here I am. Not only is she extremely unprofessional, pushing aside student worries about possibly failing the class, but she doesn't even know what she's doing. Why does the university that prides itself on being #1 in the nation for this program hire someone as ignorant as her to teach such a high-level course? |

The class in itself is actually very interesting, but the way she teaches kinda makes you hate it. Since the first day, she's been super clear with her policies (which are strict, and very little wiggle room), and at the FIRST DAY told us that the Monday of Thanksgiving break we were going to have a test so she told out-of-state students to deal with it and plan around going back home AFTER the test, and planned tickets weren't a good excuse?? It's also a LOT OF READING, you're reading a chapter per lecture and 1 chapter has like 12 sections. On top of that, the exams are HARD and she's always rambling about people taking pictures of her slides because that's copyright (even though they have the most basic info on them-not really helpful). TAs are very nice tho. Overall, not a good teacher but interesting class. |

Professor Price is well educated and the actual class is incredibly interesting. I love going to class and learning about advanced juvenile delinquency. I also love how interactive class is with constant discussions to help you learn information. However, I have never done so poorly on an exam than in her class. No matter how much you study it was almost impossible to do well. The high on the first exam was an 80 and the average was a 61. After this, she made it clear she does not curve and that the students needed to reflect themselves. If it wasn't for the extremely difficult exams, I would rate her a 5. |

Professor Price is a very educated individual and knows what she's talking about when it comes to CCJS. However, this class is way too much work and effort for an 100 level class. She doesn't show any sympathy when it comes to exams. We have a midterm the Monday before Thanksgiving break, which is understandable to get out of the way before finals. The issue is with traveling home for out of state students. She says there's no exceptions for taking the exam early or missing it in any way unless there's a "dire need". She even said that if you have covid, a test simply isn't enough, and you need to get her serious proof of illness. The only reason I'm still here at UMD is for this test, and everyone has gone home for break. We also had an extra credit assignment that was about reintegrative shaming, which was very poorly thought through and executed. I do think she has a good intent with the class, but she expects us to know way too much context for exams. The study guide for our second midterm is six pages long and the top notes that this is only "some" of the content we should know in bold. It's really too much. She's also constantly mentioning that taking pictures of her slides will result in getting in trouble with the school for "plagiarism". Her slides are basic. No one wants those. Overall, I do not recommend this elective. |

the concepts of the class are not hard to understand at all but the amount of information you have to know to do well on the exams is a lot. the chapters are super long and make up half of the exams. there's basically no assignments so you really rely on the biweekly quizzes, 2 exams, and final to boost your grade. honestly not that great of a class. even though the material is interesting, having to memorize small details from the textbook and having my grade depend on like 5 assignments. you'd most likely pass but if i could go back in time i would not have taken this class. |

She is nice as a person but her class is very difficult for a 100 level class. The average for the test was a C and I don’t think anyone got close to a 100 on the first exam. The course is really interesting and I am always paying attention but I feel like no matter how hard I study it is never enough unfortunately. I took this as a Gateway into CCJS so I hope i get above a C- |

If you want my advice if you're going to take CCJS105 as an elective DO NOT. You might as well not attend lecture because her quizzes and exams are HEAVILY based on the textbook and, mind you, one chapter is like 50 pages long. She swears that people are actively trying to steal her slides so she always reminds people that if she sees you taking pictures, she will call you out and report you for "plagiarism" or something. Her slides are literally not helpful anyway and you can find every single quiz question on Quizlet. She's very unforgiving when it comes to makeups for any graded assignment. A bright side would be that she knows what she's talking about since she's had like decades of on-hand experience with the criminal justice system, and you watch a lot of interesting videos in class. |

Okay, I was going to wait until the end of the semester to write this but I feel the need to post my review due to the fact that I am rightfully super frustrated. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but I believe that has to be one of the worst professors I have ever had. She is not understanding when you have a good reason to miss class. She believes that taking pictures of a lecture slide is considered a violation of copyright, you do not have the opportunity to make up participation points if you do not have legitimate dire and extreme measures of emergency. Most of the points come from being on time to class and having perfect attendance especially if you want to be "eligible" for extra credit assignment opportunities. The questions on the quizzes and exams mostly come from the textbook and not what she lectures about in class. I have accommodations and this class is still very difficult to manage because she is very strict with her policies. When it comes to exams, you have to turn in your exam when the first person is finished with the exam you do not get extra time, which is the main reason I made sure to take my exams in the ADS testing office. Overall, do not take her unless you have to and in my case, I had to because this was the last class I needed to graduate. |

Y'all... DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The mean for the first exam (out of 2 exams) was a 61%. The highest was an 80% (which is BARELY a B). She did not even address the class failing. There was no curve and extra credits were sometimes not feasible for students (ex: volunteer at a juvenile facility for 2 hours where you have to be fingerprinted and background checked??????). He slides are also illegible, why are we using pictures as the slide background with bright pink text?) She's not a kind person and gave me attitude for asking how the exam was going to be set up. Other students are considering emailing the dean. |

The worst crim class. LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS!!!! Her exams are very difficult and many failed the first exam and she still wouldn't curve it. She is a harsh grader for the other assignments as well, strict with time (have to be on time no matter what), and doesn't emphasize students' problems. Please don't take it unless you don't have any other option. |

This is the hardest crim class i have ever taken. The exam questions are insane and there is no study guide which is wild because youre reading over 20 articles and 7 chapters for each exam, so 14 long chapters in total with over 40 articles. She doesnt curve either. The material is heavy and she pulls small details from the text book that legit nobody could ever remember. theres also an insane work load so you have no time to really take in everything were learning. by far one of the hardest classes i have ever taken at umd. |

Great professor but the workload is high. She has multiple exams, quizzes, a 10-page paper, 2 interviews (one with a felon, one with a PO), an academic poster board, extra credit options, a paper option, and a 10-minute+ presentation. She also checks attendance, so only choose this class if you will attend. If you want to learn a lot this is the class for you. However, if you are looking for an easy class, consider other professors. You will learn a lot but the work is intense. |
