This is honestly the worst course I have taken during my time at UMD. First of all, we were required to be reading SIX books simultaneously and somehow know the minute details from them for quizzes and exams, in addition to discussions in lecture. Professor Richardson yelled at the class like we were children after we turned in our first paper because the quality apparently wasn't to his liking. There were three papers but the third one got changed to be a video assignment because a student suggested it...I think it was actually because they were so slow with grading. It took over a month for the grade for the second paper to be returned. We just got it back today after we took the final - five assignments had not been returned when we took the final by the way, not including the quiz they decided not to include in our grade because everyone failed it. At least have of the classes were guest lectures and it seemed like Professor Richardson had given up on teaching himself. The elms messages/announcements were often rude and condescending. I don't think I really learned anything new after the first month. Professor Richardson is very passionate but not a very good teacher and the TA was even worse. The class just seemed so disorganized even though it was not the first time it was being taught. I hated basically every minute of this class by the end of the semester and went into it thinking I was signing up for a fairly easy GenEd that was about a topic I am very interested in. I have not yet received my final grade but went into the class expecting an A and most likely will get a B (which is absolutely ridiculous....and I am a senior, by the way). Do not take this class. |

Richardson can come off as scary (there were a few times where he yelled at our class when he was not impressed with the quality of our writing), but if you put effort into the assignments,he will appreciate it and it will show in your grade. We had reaction papers to films due every week or sometimes every other week, but its only 3 pages, so not that bad at all. If you turn in A level work (which, if you are in a 400+ level class, you should be able to do) you will get an A in the class, simple as that. If you do the reaction papers right before class and put no effort into it, I almost guarantee you will get a C or below on the assignment. You don't necessarily need to keep up with the readings week after week, just be able to find relevant passages from the books to relate to the main themes of the class. Also, he got upset when we went over page limits for the reaction papers, but his prompts asked for SO MUCH information that I totally understood why we all went over the 3 page limit. Overall a great professor who makes you change the way you see the problems that face the black community. Very knowledgable professor. |

He's a great prof. Really knowledgeable about the juvenile justice system. Liked the class but we had to write a paper nearly every week so that sucked. Overall I would recommend this class. |
