Professor Richter's Disaster Cinema course is an enjoyable elective. It was the first film course I've taken and made me what to take another course that he teaches. Very nice professor and was generous with deadlines.

Professor Richter’s Jews and Sports was a fun class for my last semester at UMD. Honestly the other reviews on here seem to miss how he designed the course and not consider how the discussions were generally pretty good and then got better by the last half of the semester when students understood the themes more. He also was always accessible before or after class to discuss papers.

Strongly recommend Professor Richter for ARHU 230. He was very flexible and prompt with email. He designed interesting assignments and gave good feedback.

Dr. Richter was super flexible and quick with emails in ARHU 230. And my other class with him. Recommend fully and am surprised students have had other experiences. .

Took him online. Did not respond to any of my emails/canvas messages and graded strictly. He left assignment prompts extremely vague and then docked points for missing information. No class structure and an overall unprofessional and unprepared teacher.

Professor Richter is super nice, but his lectures are super disorganized and essentially just stream of conscious. This works for some profs, but not for Richter. It was almost as if he was insecure about the quality of the class: every class, instead of actually discussing the readings, he’d ask us “what did you think of the readings because honestly I’m not a huge fan so I want your feedback.” But we’d never actually discuss anything about the content or material. There was just no engaging discussion in the class. It’s really hard to describe, but the classroom environment was just kind of pathetic to be blunt. By the time we were a month in, hardly anyone came to class discussions because of how useless it was. On the bright side, the class I took with him was easy to do well in as long as you’re used to writing papers. But the mean grade on the paper assignments on ELMS actually was not that high, so he may not even be that generous of a grader, just beware. With that being said, he is a nice guy and as long as you participate in class, he'll take notice and want you to do well.

One of the worst run classes ever. No rubrics and lectures are incredibly useless. He rants about nothing. You will learn everything through the readings. Honestly just terrible.

Fun class, good professor. Somewhat of a hard grader but allowed a rewrite.

this class is NOT hard you have 3 essays the entire semester. essays dont have rubrics but with the freestyle atmosphere of the class, it was kind of implied that the essays were not supposed to be some crazy work of art and were just supposed to be just completed with some effort. genuinely dont understand how you could even cheat in this class you literally just had to exist and put in bare minimum effort and would get a passing grade

The course is interesting and pretty easy but Professor Richter kinda sucks. Discussions are pretty lackluster and repetitive so by the end of the semester, no one attends. He also is horrible at replying to student emails and the way he grades is insane. He will throw low grades on papers without leaving any comments and when trying to email him to learn why the paper grade is low, he will ignore emails. Since there are only four grades for the class and the papers make up 75% of that it is important to give students feedback. It feels like he didn't read any papers and threw a dart to determine student grades, he makes it pretty obvious he doesn't care. TLDR good course, bad professor.

Took Prof. Richter's Disaster Cinema in Spring 2022 and thought it was a cool class. He is a very smart guy and definitely valued everyone's opinion in a way that was unique. I liked how he organized the themes of the course and also thought all of the movies he picked were really good. His teaching style was definitely laid back, but overall I thought it worked well. I am planning to take another class from him since I think class participation is key to how the class goes.

Pretty underwhelming. Every class felt... treading water-ish? Like, I'm not sure exactly what the goal was. He didn't have us watch ANY scenes during class time (I never expected full movies to be shown in class but the other film classes I've taken have had students watch and then examine one or two scenes together each class), so discussion fell flat. I wasn't sure what he was looking for in the ten minutes set aside for "scene analyses" since as I said, we never watched any scenes in class with our group + there was no rubric. Nobody knew what to do or talk about. This problem was made worse because we learned nothing of film techniques, camera work, mise-en-scene or anything related to film. Instead, he based the class entirely around various themes. It felt like any real lecture material dried up within 15 or 20 minutes of each hour and 15 minute class. All in all, it felt very bare-bones and by the end of the semester attendance had dwindled to maybe 25-30%.

I'm a Film Studies major and I learned more about film analysis in the Latin American cinema class then in any other course I've taken for the major. Dr. Richter is pretty laid-back but he has also very high expectations. The themes he presents in the course have helped me to rethink how I've written a bunch of other papers. He definitely loves to talk about the films but the course requires a lot of work to stay on top of everything. I do recommend him but the course requires a fair bit of background knowledge or willingness to do you're own research.

Professor Richter's drug history class has been my favorite class at UMD and I was surprised that no one reviewed it here. I think about the class pretty frequently whenever I read about fentayl or other drug busts. I would highly recommend it to non-history majors at UMD.

Multiple emails were never answered. We're told to email paper drafts for review, but I waited a month with no response even after multiple follow-up emails. Prompts are very vague, but he'll still take off for specific things without giving feedback for improvement. Only graded on 3 papers and discussion posts. Very opinionated and one-sided. Don't buy books! Readings are rarely discussed.

I'm a huge soccer fan so taking HIST328R with Dr. Richter was definitely something that really intrigued me. I have no regrets and enjoyed the course immensely. I definitely learned a lot from Dr. Richter and his course and have gained a greater appreciation for the history of soccer and the sport's intersection in global politics and economics. Dr. Richter provides a ton of great supplementary sources that are very in-depth and enriching. The only qualm I had with Dr. Richter was that I think he can improve the logistics/structure of his live online lectures, the live online lectures seemed too improvisational and Dr. Richter seemed to ramble on sometimes. Other than that, Dr. Richter handled the online semester really well and was very understanding of paper and assignment deadline extensions.

I'm so surprised that there's no reviews on Professor Richter yet. He is an amazing professor who loves what he teaches and is really helpful towards his students. I took his soccer course without knowing anything about the sport, and I genuinely learned so much about its history. He was also so understanding about extensions and whatnot. As for grading, he isn't the type to hand out A's left and right, but I wouldn't consider him a hard grader. As long as you put in the work he will give you a good grade and he's really open to chatting before/after class about any assignment and lets you know exactly what he needs on each essay/discussion. He is a really interesting guy and tells funny stories that are also relevant to the course.
