Professor Roe isn't your typical college professor; rather, she gives more high school teacher vibes than a professor, and I mean that in the best way possible. In college, most professors don't care about you. They know you are an adult now, and they expect you to be fully taking care of yourself. In a sea of this, Professor Roe was a breath of fresh air. She knew all of us by our names, checked up on us to see how we were doing, and was really understanding if a student was going through tough times. She would always take input from students and use it to improve. However, something she always did do was call out students in the middle of the class (sometimes not always) and ask them questions, so pay attention in class, or just have an idea of what's going on, and you'll be good. In addition, she was very liberal with extensions. There were many times during the semester when I was not doing well, and she immediately granted extensions without asking any further questions. She also gave every student a free 24-hour extension on all major submissions. This 24-hour extension came in clutch during midterms week. In addition, she was very, very organized. She had a Google doc, which literally had what was due for that day, what we would be doing that day in class, and also what HW she would be assigning that day. She updated that sheet every day. So whenever I missed a class, I would just check the Google doc to see what happened. Oh yeah, and the best part was our class was MWF but she just made the Wednesday class asynchronous for the entire semester! So effectively, we all just met on two days only! Maybe something I didn't like that much was that she would often make us work in groups and interact with others a lot in class. I am an introvert, so I usually wasn't a big fan of this. I heard almost all other English professors do this, so maybe it's fine, but I sometimes felt like she loved making students work together or talk in class. Some may love this I personally wasn't the biggest fan of it. But again, all other professors also do it. Coming to the class, it did actually require a bit of work. Here is how the portion breakdown went: Participation: 15% Major Assignment #1: Summary + Draft Workshop: 10% Major Assignment #2: Rhetorical Analysis + Draft Workshop: 10% Research Mini-Projects: 10% Major Assignment #3: Inquiry Essay + Draft Workshop: 15% Major Assignment #4: Position Paper + Draft Workshop: 25% Major Assignment #5: Public Remediation Project + Draft Workshop: 15% Participation is key here. It's not about how active you are in class, but literally if you submit notes on readings and provide peer reviews. If you do the bare minimum, she gives you 10/10 for every participation. I did miss a few participations where she immediately gave me a zero. I then submitted a project a bit late and told her in class that I did submit it late, and she immediately changed the grade to 10/10. So here's my suggestion: if you see anything marked as a participation submission, please just do it, it's literally free marks. Another big suggestion I have is, don't just submit your assignment directly when you are done. Rather, once you are done with a major assignment, send it to either the TA, Professor Roe, or the writing department and ask for feedback. After I started doing this, I got some feedback and started incorporating it in my work, and my grade began to increase, so yeah, that was a good idea. The goal of the class is to write a position paper with over 20 cited sources. Rather than making us find all 20 resources at once, Professor Roe slowly made us find 5 resources every few weeks, helping us slowly build towards it while also ensuring we never felt too overwhelmed trying to find any sources, so that was also nice. She also tried ensuring we never felt too overwhelmed with the work and if we did, we could just tell her and she would look to reduce it! Also, something important was that she trusted all of us. Many and I mean many, English professors started going crazy after AI came into play. Some of my friends were forced to write their position by hand in class, while some were forced to turn in their papers through rigorous AI checkers. Professor Roe trusted her students, and we weren't forced to turn in our papers through some weird tools. Overall, great professor, go for her if you can. |

Great professor. She does a really great job at preparing us for papers and projects. For major papers, she gives you a 24 hour grace period before points are taken off which is really nice. She also tries to adjust how some assignments work based on suggestions from her students that sometimes result to some confusion. However, she's pretty easy to reach out to and understanding of these issues. |

Super sweet professor! Very understanding of students' needs and I believe she was flexible when students had personal issues and needed extensions on papers. She does call on people in class randomly though, so make sure to pay attention. |

professor roe is super sweet and cares about her students. although i never asked for any extensions, i believe she was flexible with other students and was open-minded about what her students needed from her. she takes in a lot of input from her students and oftentimes made her thursday classes asynchronous which was super nice! the course is mostly made up of essays and a few other assignments such as reading notes and discussion boards on canvas. her requirements for her assignments are very clear and she goes over what the rubrics are in class in-depth. she does occasionally call on students randomly in class, so u need to pay at least some attention in class. would take her again :) |

I don't understand the reviews saying she is unorganized. Maybe she just took feedback and changed, but she was very well organized. She has a calendar with every assignment/class/etc which makes it easy to follow along the course. She literally allows you to reuse the essays you do in the beginning for the final research paper which is amazing. She is also willing to change her teaching style based on feedback and adapt to what her students need/want. No textbook required because you can find it online and theres only a couple reading assignments (very simple). Professor Roe is very kind and reasonable. If you put in the effort you will get an A. |

Yvonne Roe is a very kind person but an awful, unorganized professor. There were times where she was very passive aggressive during email correspondence with people in my class and she had to follow up with apology emails. The class assignments are displayed on a google doc, but she and our TA would modify it last minute without notifying the class. This led to people not getting work done in time or doing exorbitant amounts of work done well before deadlines. There was one instance where more than half of our class wrote an 8-page research paper draft in 3 days and then during class she acted dumb and said the deadline was actually a week from then. There were several instances where she came across as an unprofessional educator and that made taking her class very frustrating. |

Absolutely great. She is very understanding and doesn't take off points if you're late. She will give you a zero but if you immediately email her and ask if you can turn it in for a grade change she will say yes. She love telling stories about our family. She is so nice and everything I've done in this technical writing class was super important for me getting a job in the real world. It helped many in the class get internships and jobs. She is an amazing instructor and I suggest taking her class. You won't regret it. |

She's incredibly nice, and while the course curriculum itself is jam-packed that's really the English department's fault, not hers, and she's always super understanding when you have other stuff going on. |

Prof. Roe is one of the best professors I have ever had! She was so sweet and understanding about what everyone had going on in their their other classes and in live overall. She was always so encouraging and flexible to make things work for everyone in class and tried her best to be as accommodating and apply everyone's feedback on how the class schedule should look (visually and the work load) and wouldn't mind extending an assignment deadline if she felt everyone needed the extra time. It was also really easy to talk to her and she always responded quickly and made class fun with her easygoing personality and occasional stories about her weekends. |
