This class been the BEST class that I have taken here at UMD. The class is discussion based which is a good change from the typical lecture style courses. The concepts we discuss are definitely interesting and he gives you the opportunity to voice your opinions with no judgement. Each week we talked about a new topic that professor DJ was extremely knowledgeable about fostering natural conversations among us as students. He also challenged some of our point of views which made us think a little deeper about the topic at hand. Overall, I 100% recommend taking this class if you can. It felt more like a break for me and I looked forward to class each week.

The class is tremendously interesting and intellectually stimulating, and it's probably the most interesting course I've taken at UMD thus far. The readings are all interesting and relevant, and the essays are fun to write. Professor Rosenthal not only knows what he's talking about, but he also fosters real discussion and debate. He even recommended that I submit one of my essays for an award, which was incredibly generous of him. It's overall a fantastic introduction to dilemmas on national security. I have no idea what the review below me is on about. It reads like a bitter pseudo-intellectual trying to seem sophisticated.

The course is superficial at best. The lectures covered surface-level concepts, leaving me with nothing to sink my teeth into. Assignments and discussions never went beyond the shallow end. If you crave intellectual stimulation, this course is a dead end. College should challenge your thinking, but this class barely registered on the mental radar. Not at all what I expected in Honors College.

TAKE THE CLASS!!!! I cannot express how enjoyable he was. My class was small but he made sure everyone's opinions were heard if they were comfortable to share which is very impressive given the sensitive nature of some of the topics covered. It honestly less of a class and more of a discussion with Professor Rosenthal and the other students. The fact that not many people take him or his class is a crime. Homework is only 1 essay per week, attendance is mandatory, and my class was 7-9:30 pm on Thursdays. And it was still the only class that made me sad when it got cancelled some weeks. As long as you're genuinely interested in the course material, there is basically no stress. If you're thinking about it, take. the. class. :-)

I cannot speak highly enough about Professor Rosenthal as well as this seminar. It's a fairly easy honors seminar that comes with weekly readings and writing, but they are straightforward and opinion-based. Because this is an "easier" seminar, it is the type of class where if you are intellectually driven and have a desire to learn, you will enjoy it and pick up loads of information along the way. What's really key to this class if you are willing to participate and actually learn. It takes the stress off of grades and makes it more enjoyable to learn about the topics rather than making you struggle for an A and resent having to go to class. Professor Rosenthal does an amazing job keeping the discussion interesting and fun to participate in. It does take place late on Monday nights, so sometimes it feels long and tiring, but as I said, Professor Rosenthal does an amazing job helping it not feel like that. Overall loved the class.

Easy honors seminar - just do the weekly reading and try to participate in discussions. If you care about the topic it's a lot of fun because he really tries to keep class discussion based. Granted it's also 2.5 hours on a Monday night, so you're gonna be tired and bored sometimes. There's also a weekly writing but it's all opinion and the final presentation is actually pretty cool.
