DO NOT TAKE HER. I read the reviews and decided to take the class anyway. Worst mistake of my life. I currently have a 36%, she assigns SO MUCH pointless reading and makes you do quick-writes on them every single class. She grades so harshly and honestly I'll be surprised if I pass. She is truly the worst Professor at UMD and needs to be fired immediately. She's also extremely rude and boring.

I am currently sitting in class contemplating leaving. These reviews that I have been reading are not lying nor are they being hyperbolic. Rowland administers harsh grading that cant be read. You'd expect someone this pretentious to be able to grade things online like a normal person. Also, considering how picky she is as a teacher she never saves any papers that students can use as a guide. Do not take her because you will not learn anything from her. She thinks shes Noam Chomsky but not even close.

Just stay away , she’s extremely boring and all she does is give tons of meaningless readings that she makes you do quick writes over them and not to mention she grades so ruthlessly, if you want to save your GPA and not fall asleep during class avoid her at all costs I very much wish I checked the ratings for her class before I signed up

I honestly wish I read this person's review before setting foot in this class. I have NEVER struggled through a class as much as HIST 462 but put in so much effort! I am currently enrolled in the class and counting down the seconds until it is over. We have finals in 3 weeks and I still read over 350 pages in 3 different books this past weekend!! If you have any kind of life, do NOT take this class. Prof. Rowland is very nice, and she knows absolutely everything about the Civil War. So basically, the only thing that matters is if you agree with everything she already knows. She will rip all 3 papers apart, and you'll need to start studying at least a week before exams if you want any hope of getting a good grade. Save yourself the headache. Take. Something. Else.

Although it may look like Dr. Rowland gives A's and B's, you should know that to actually receive either of these grades is an extremely difficult feat. The amount of reading required for this class, as well as the stringent grading curve that Dr. Rowland uses, are completely not worth your time. As a predominantly A student I was shocked to realize that I was putting triple the amount of effort into this class, yet only receiving B's on the assignments. Plus, Dr. Rowland's in class writing assignments are a total B*--she grades them from Check minus minus (yes, 2 minuses) to check minus, to check, to check plus, to check plus plus. Talk about subjectivity. Yes, the Civil War is fascinating. But is it really worth at least 200 pages of reading a week? Is it really worth staying up extremely late hours to just receive a B? In those situations, one would usually expect an A. If you want some really good advice, and I mean the best advice out there, here it is: it will cost much less anxiety, frustration, and harm to your GPA if you do not take this class. Oh and just a heads up: On our midterm, out of 36 students in the class, there were 4 A's in total. (That is--4 A and A minuses included)
