Loved this class, would definitely recommend. He posted all slides before class and slides would have good example questions. Midterm and Final were easy and had a lot of similar questions to in-class examples. Would start and end on time. Discussions were a little pointless if you had an okay understanding of R, but overall very easy A. |

MATH120 - Dr. Safsten is a pretty chill professor who tries to make the class manageable for the students. I took AP calc (AB) in high school, and would say that this class is much easier than AP calc, so if you took calculus in high school and at least semi understood it, you should be able to make it through his class pretty easily and skip most days except for discussion days once a week. However, if you have never taken calculus before, you should definitely attend. There are 3 midterms for this class (basically just 3 exams) and every other week in the discussion there will be a worksheet, which is graded for correctness, and quiz that you have the last 10 minutes to complete, which are usually easy as long as you understand the basics of the concepts. He also assigns online homework every week that will be more difficult than the questions you will see on his exams. Just note that the final exam is a lot more difficult than the midterms, but still manageable. Overall, Dr. Safsten is a solid professor and his class is very manageable. |

MATH410: excellent teacher. Understood the proofs well and rarely got lost. Could explain everything clearly. Grading was generous: 20% homework, 20% quizzes, with drop 2 lowest. Gave lots of partial credit on exams. |

Safsten is amazing. He explains concepts very clearly in lecture and makes the most difficult concepts not seem so bad. The midterms are more than fair and are very manageable. The worksheets in discussion are harder than the problems on the midterm so if you understand the worksheets, you'll do fine on the midterms. I highly recommend him and would 100% take him again. |

He's a really great professor and makes this hard class durable. His exams are never crazy hard, and while some of the classwork and homework may challenge us, he made it clear that the exams are not meant to stretch the material but test us no the concepts we should already know. He made the exams medium level so not crazy easy but never types of problems that we hadn't seen and worked with before. No curveballs on the exams. His lectures move fast, but because we only meet 3 times a week, we do have a lot of material to cover. I took advantage of office hours and he is very flexible with availability. Overall, he is a really understanding and caring professor. If you need extensions on the homework, he is flexible and understanding and will grant them with no points off. While calc 1 may not be the easiest class, this is most definitely the professor you want if you have to take this course. |
