This class is relatively easy and covers 3 gen eds. The curriculum and presentation are okay but not really for everyone. Dr. Saggese is very knowledgeable but not the most approachable or personable. Pros: The TAs are easy graders, and it's also helpful that the exams are very straightforward and not challenging at all, so it's a pretty easy A. Dr. Saggese is very passionate about the subject and also very organized. Also, her "no surprises on exams" rule was great, she gives out a study guide for the midterm and final about a week or two before the exam, and the guide basically has a list of potential exam questions and she picks a couple of them at random for the exam. Also the multiple choice on her exams is very easy. Cons: 20% of your grade is attending lecture and discussion, and not going to one class can really take a toll on the grade. Lecture attendance was helpful for assignments and exams, and her participation worksheets had a lot of practice questions and I actually liked that. However, I thought discussions were useless except for essay peer feedback days. Also, Dr. Saggese does not post any actual material if you miss lecture. Her slides are just pictures with limited explanations, and she explains everything verbally. This made it hard to take notes as she spoke, but I found that just sitting back to listen and watch was enough to understand and retain the material, as the majority of the concepts are simple to understand. I also found that the curriculum of this course (which she designed), although opened up an interesting perspective, was clearly based on her personal political beliefs. This does make her knowledgeable and passionate about the subjects, but some of the ideas she was talking about especially at the beginning of the semester seemed a bit extreme/out there (like how a picture of a sunset is racist). Sometimes her lecturing can feel like political rants, which can be draining to listen to.

Dr. Saggese is incredibly knowledgeable and organized. Her ELMS page is a dream, making it really easy to follow along throughout the semester and study when its exam time. The class consisted of 2 essays and 2 exams, and then just lecture participation. Very very manageable, I just recommend actually going to class because it makes studying for the exams a lot easier (and useful info is only said in class and not put on her slides). I also had a great TA (who I think was an easy grader), but yeah I definitely recommend the class as it's very interesting and manageable (not much time required outside of class, maybe 30 mins a week and then extra with the essays and exams).

I think that ARTH263 as a course might be too "woke" for me. Perhaps because it is literally about the less-discussed topics of modern art history. Professor Saggese is really cool (and stylish) ((and knowledgeable)) -- overall, a great professor. The course is designed through weekly modules, making it easy to navigate. There are only two exams in this class (including the final) and both are pretty straightforward. There are also two essays which require you to visit museums. All can be done with some time and effort. The only complaint I have is against the way weekly discussions are structured, which I wish allowed for more discussion and less worksheets.
