i took this class the fall 24 semeser, judging by the reviews it looks like she's changed the structure of the class immensely....... now, this class goes over interesting topics related to the ethics of heritage but frankly the prof is not at all an engaging lecturer, meaning most people were tuned out or didn't interact with the topics of the class in a meaningful way. nothing bad towards the professor, but she was basically just talking at us about abstract heritage theory concepts. there's not really much else to it.... but as for the work involved in the class, they are very lenient! at least this semester they drastically changed things. we had 6 papers to write, all of which were given 100% and without any comments. the papers are all fairly short, 3-4 pages in length, with a pretty flexible prompt. we didn't have "mandatory" readings but your participation in discussion sections would be easier if you did. pretty much the only work were these papers. pretty easy class, but somewhat boring even though there was a very promising syllabus.

Be very wary of this class!! Professors Samuels is a very boring lecturer. There are two reading due every sunday which are very long and tedious and your mandatory comments are graded very harshly. She says she grades the kahoots off of participation but that is a lie, it is off of accuracy. She doesn’t tell you anything about the final exam(no format no content) except a list of almost 200 words that you have to define yourself. I would not take this class again, definitely steer clear

For a UH course, this course required way more work than I expected. The weekly readings are incredibly dense, even for someone who is typically fine with reading academic texts. They are also long, expect 40-60 pages a week. Kahoots are every week and based on the readings, and oftentimes asks about incredibly small details. There was also a final, which is not typical of UH courses. On the brighter side, while this course was dry at times the overall topics were thought-provoking and interesting to study. However, I would not recommend this class. It is unfortunate this is the mandatory I-Series for this cluster because its sister course HNUH268V is one of my favorites this semester.

Policy HEAVY. This is less of a "heritage" class and more of a "what is the theoretical idea of heritage and how does international law work" class. There is a lot of reading and writing per week, and it feels more like a grad class. Honors clusters are always hit-or-miss, but I'd suggest avoiding this one.

Be. Careful. This course is policy-heavy, focusing on international law and heritage as a THEORETICAL concept. It is incredibly difficult with long readings fit for a graduate class. Take a different cluster unless you're prepared to work your butt off (or unless you want to work for the UN).

This class is unnecessarily hard because Professor Lafrenz-Samuels is so afraid of AI. We have two long, difficult-to-understand readings every week, where we are required to leave at least three thoughtful comments and then we have a graded Kahoot on each reading. The comments are graded very harshly, and barely anyone gets full points while no feedback is given on how to improve. The kahoots are supposed to be about your individual understanding of the readings, but she picks the most random details out of the 30-page readings that are impossible to remember. When the whole class emailed her individually, expressing their concerns about the Kahoots and readings, she responded rudely to each email, telling them to go to office hours to get help rather than address any of their concerns. Her lectures are so boring and cover random topics that are sometimes completely unrelated to the readings. She has not graded anything in weeks, so we have no idea if we are improving or doing just as badly as we all were at the start. Do not take this class with this professor if you do not have to.
