Not for me. I'm a philosophy major and a class on mind body dualism sounded like it could be really interesting but her teaching style takes away from that. She is very clearly knowledgeable on the topic and seems nice enough but she is very jargon heavy, slides are full of text that she speeds through, and at times felt like I needed to have taken a psychology/biology minor to fully get what she is saying as she leans very much into such ideas. By the time I understood or processed something she said we were 10 slides away. Her tests were also different structures, like non of them were the same, admittedly she said she was trying new things out but still that made it harder to know what to expect and how to study. Overall she is knowledgeable, but I don't think her teaching style was for me. |

Professor Schecter treats this class like it is an upper level elective and makes it so much harder and more complicated than any 100 level class should be. She often uses advanced philosophy-related vocabulary without bothering to explain what they mean during class, leaving me constantly confused and trying to catch up my understanding before more things pile on. During lectures, we go over the main ideas and viewpoints of readings that were assigned prior. However, the exams are hardly related to the material AT ALL. The multiple choice are SO HARD and are ENTIRELY STRUCTURAL READING COMPREHENSION rather than questions that are about the actual substance. For instance, it will be questions such as "what function does objection 1 serve in relation to paragraph 3?" with extremely long-winded and confusingly worded answer choices that all sound like they could be right. Like, why not make it explicit which answer choice is the correct one?? You could know have readings memorized and the material down pat and still do poorly. And there are only 8 multiple choice on exams, so failing is way too easy. I literally got a 68 on one midterm even when I had the essay pre-written because of the multiple choice. Schecter does not want you to succeed. She clearly does not care since she's making the exams like that. Overall this class brought my GPA way down and is NOT WORTH IT. |

Professor Schechter is a great professor. There is one assignment before every class, but it's just annotating the reading we are about to talk about. There are three midterms, no final. For two of the three midterms she gave us the one written question before hand, so we were able to prepare. Discussion is great too, it really helps you understand the material. No phones or laptops in class, but that's really not a issue. Lecture isn't for so much taking notes, but more listening to her. Overall, I would definitely take this if you need a Gen-Ed. |

Professor Schechter is a pretty good professor. Her passion and knowledge shines through in this mostly discussion based class and she's very clear with feedback (sometimes a little sarcastic too but nothing truly rude) on the essays and other assignments. The class itself was fine. I was only semi-interested, and the weekly journaling assignments weren't too time consuming. In general, the class is pretty lowkey, except for when it comes to the essays. She releases the prompt on Thursday and expects a rough draft finished by Tuesday. So to adequately answer the prompt, I needed to write 500-1000 words a day which was definitely time consuming. But otherwise, class is fine. Professor is good, and I recommend her. |

She made the course very engaging and the course load is pretty light with about a reading each week. The tests were open note so they weren’t very hard. I would recommend going to lectures as the readings are quite difficult and going to lectures help a lot. Only annoying thing is no technology but I would definitely recommend if you have any interest in philosophy. |

All things taken into consideration, she is a great professor. The only thing I would say is I wish her teaching style was more engaging. I am super interested in philosophy but not a philosophy major and I found myself getting a bit bored in her class not because the topics weren't interesting but because of her teaching style. But she does seem to care about students. Also she allowed notes on the exams and some extra credit opportunities. |

Amazing professor! She wants everyone to succeed. Very small workload (one short reading [which you can skim] and 3 small paragraphs per week, graded for completion). The exams are curved and some questions are dropped depending on how many people missed it. She built the syllabus to be "fail-friendly" so you can do poorly on all three exams and still get an A. She'll actually start emailing you if you bombed an exam, providing links to study material, office hours, and encouragement. The material itself is pretty difficult. Her vocabulary is extremely high and it occasionally feels like you're having simple math explained to you by Shakespeare. Every philosophy major I saw, though, was jumping up and down with love for her, so I guess it depends on your enthusiasm towards philosophy. Shoutout to the TA (Xintong Wang)! Super kind and knowledgable. |

She explains everything really well, both she and the TAs are great to talk to if you are actually into philosophy. There are many options for you to improve your overall grade if you don’t do really well in the exams. Again, if you really are into philosophy, take this class, it’s food for thought. |

This professor might honestly be one of the worst professors I have ever come across in all my years. her arrogance and strict policies make me believe that she is teaching this course for the sole purpose of lowering everyone's GPA. The course content is so difficult that even the TAs find some of the content to be difficult. If you are considering taking this class as a gen-ed, don't. |

PHIL100 with Professor Schechter is way harder than a 100-level gen-ed should be. She treats it like an upper-level major class. Technology isn’t allowed in class, and she doesn’t let students take their exams back. She guards everything like they’re nuclear codes. I would highly recommend picking a different gened. |

Class is interesting but not easy if you are not a philosophy major. I would not recommend taking this class as a gen-ed. |

cool professor, very knowledgeable and smart. The content is cool, but I think her structure and assignments suck the fun out of the content. I wish she left more time and space for class discussion instead of forced group work. Pretty easy class though, and she gives great feedback. |

The course was fine. Interesting stuff and the prof knew how to get a discussion going. The thing is I didn’t feel like I was actually learning that much because the discussions were so poorly structured/designed and they took up So Much Time. It seemed like the prof basically used discussions to cover up her lack of preparedness. Mind you this was a 400-level course but she came in with the attitude of trying to get us to discuss very superficial stuff; that really discouraged me from doing the readings. |
