I am not quick to dislike a teacher, but I am definitely not a fan of this professor. Throughout class he discusses very general themes and ideas and then he tests on specifics. There is little if any out-of-class work to help drill the class content into our brains. And I can't resist quoting him. I recently recorded a part of a lecture and this is word for word what he said: “This week we discussed deviant over-performing as being people who buy into the concept that looking at things such as sport ethic and we also talked about the people who are more likely to be impacted.” I'm pretty sure it's not just me, but this sentenced makes very little sense. How can a professor expect much from students when he struggles to form coherent sentences in his lectures.

It was not stated when I signed up for this class that you would have to put in three hours a week outside of class at a volunteer site. Being expected to get to a volunteer site that was not in walking distance was sometimes a struggle. There are two midterms and a final and if you can choose not to take the final if you do well on the first two exams. Every week you have to write a reflection from what you did at your service site and Scott grades these harder than they need to be graded. There is also a six page paper on a research question of your choosing. Overall, this class was made more difficult than it needed to be. There was more work than I would have expected.

He makes sure to take off points on tests for wording instead of content. Make sure you argue with him for test points because his questions are vague and allow for multiple answers where the only one that's right is in his head. He tests a lot on what he has said so you have to write down all of his analogies instead of the actual content. Have to do weekly journals which isn't too bad, but also assigns busy work that takes a while and is worth nothing.Wish the class was more balanced for the amount of work you put in. Disappointing class.

Dr Scott grades subjective material like an objective test. He assigns reflections and evaluates them based on the class material. He worries too much about the wording of your work than the content. Its frustrating receiving mediocre grades when yo understand the class. Make sure you use exact wording on tests and papers or he will deduct points no mercy. He makes an interesting, fun class dissapointing.
