I took INST354 with Shahbazi. Honestly I’ve never left a course/professor review but Shahbazi was probably the worst experience I’ve had with a professor, and I would feel guilty not letting people know. I’m sure he is a great person outside of class and does come across as a nice person in many ways. However, Shahbazi is significantly more concerned and preoccupied with his other job at NIH, he will consistently spend half the class or more speaking about it. He will spend the other half of the class complaining that nobody participates, and whatever else happens to comes to his mind. Eventually he will get frustrated enough that nobody is paying attention to his lecture and he’ll tell everyone to put away their laptops so you have to just sit and stare at him while he goes on. More frustratingly, he consistently does not upload slides, when he does, it will be a duplicate from the previous week, or from a different class. If you’re lucky enough to get the correct slides posted they will be either taken from another professor or course, or incomplete and unhelpful. He did not seem to know how to navigate canvas, or seem to care to learn (he is beyond intellectually capable of learning how to); he would say for about 8 weeks that he was going to grade everyone's assignments and update canvas, and only did so AFTER the FINAL and he submitted grades late. Shahbazi I’m sure you’re reading this (you mentioned you do in class) and I’m sure you are a great person, but you need to humbly reevaluate how you conduct yourself in the classroom and look at it from the perspective of a student who’s paying for this. |

Took his class at USG campus, and I do not recommend him as a professor. His lectures consisted of yap sessions about his work at NIH and other things but when he was on topic, it was just hard to follow. Used another professor's slides throughout the semester, and made his first and last lecture slides for one class ever. Would make up rules on the spot, and would threaten us with a final exam instead of a final project (he eventually said it was going to be a final project that we submit). Overall, avoid this professor if possible. |

Mandatory attendance on a three-hour class that primarily consists of the professor's stream of consciousness, and you lose points for not having other people in your group show up. The content is moderately interesting, and it's obvious that he has a lot of very interesting ideas and stories to tell, but wow if the class is not a test in your own patience. |

straight garbage, lies on the syllabus does not teach. Do not take him; honestly, double it and give it to another bad school for him to teach. |

Honestly, I would not recommend him. He used Prof Joel Chan's slides and read off of them every day. I mean I guess you could pass with a good grade if you make friends and have previous knowledge of Python but you're better off taking another professor. |

There were many things that went wrong in this class. Many of the assignments were not graded until the seventh week of school. Several of the assignments were not working properly due to broken links. He randomly assigned a final exam out of nowhere even though it was not in the syllabus. He never made an announcement about it and only told a small portion of the class. He was upset about students not attending class even though attendance was optional, and many felt as though they were not getting any value from attending. Slow to respond to emails as well. The class is very dull and there is no class interaction. He rushes over topics quickly. TA's go over practice problems on Friday's which was a great thing about the class. However, this professor was not attentive towards his students and would often get frustrated and annoyed whenever we asked questions. I would highly suggest getting a different professor. |
