I loved this class. If I was an ARTH major, I would take as many classes with Dr. Shannon as I could. The class is extremely engaging, and his expectations are very clear. The class is split up into two lectures, and section. Section is run by TA's, and is the only bad part about this class. If you show up to class, you will get an A. Everything in this class is fairly easy. The Mid-term and final were semi-difficult, however if you go to lecture and pay attention you will get an A. Also, just be warned he DOES NOT WANT any electronics in the room. You take notes on paper; no phones, airpods, ipads, laptops, NOTHING. He will call you out in front of everyone, and even walked up to one kid on his phone one time and stood next to him for him to get off of his phone. This is a great class though, you should definitely take it if you can |

Enthusiastic and pleasant. You need to take good notes and study a lot for this class. It was enjoyable in lecture, but tiring to study. |

ARTH201 Expecting a B+ Anonymous 12/12/2023 |
doesn't provide notes or explanations to anything online. slides only have pictures of art and topics arent listed so missing lecture is a huge setback. not to mention the fact that he is so bad at his job |

Loved this professor - Dr. Shannon made the class really engaging. I am interested in climate science, so I enjoyed the content of the class. I don't enjoy reading, however, and there were about two readings assigned per week, so I definitely did not keep up with all of the content. Dr. Shannon is great for that though since he would always summarize the readings well in the following lecture. Dr. Shannon really gives the impression that he cares about his students, which can be difficult to find in college classes where there are hundreds of students. I had him read over one of my essays and definitely recommend going to his office hours. While I loved Dr. Shannon's teaching style, this class should have had more assignments. I barely scraped away with an A, and considering it is a Gen-Ed class I did not like how I was not sure for a while whether I would get an A or B. We only had four assignments, and while one was a revision of a previous assignment, the assignments were not graded super easily. The averages would usually be around an 85 for the assignments, so other than discussion there really was no easy A's. If you're worried about getting an A, I probably wouldn't recommend this class since the grading is very variable (no rubrics), so points are not clearly assigned. It is up to your TA's direction. The final was also in-person, at 8 AM, and we had to memorize like 50 artworks, so if you cannot memorize that is something to keep in mind. |

ARTH265 Expecting an A- Anonymous 05/18/2022 |
Professor Shannon is a very caring professor. He engages with his students and takes the time to know their ideas about the content his teaches and even tries to learn everyone's name. He also cares about the classes' well being; each class starts with two minutes of silence to clear up our minds. The class was also genuinely interesting. Each week was around a different idea, and he was good at explaining the art. There is a lot of reading, though a lot of it gets discussed in class and you wont be penalized for skipping one or two. The only thing I would change is adding more assignments. It was essentially two projects and discussion. Nonetheless this might be my favorite class I've taken at UMD. Would I take this class again? Yes? Would I recommend this professor? Without a doubt. |

Professor Shannon is very passionate and knowledgeable about art history. I would add more assignments to this class because the grade is based off like 3 really big assignments and discussion attendance so grades can be hard to bring up. He definitely makes it an inclusive learning environment and tries to connect with students personally. I would recommend this class. |

Okay class. I had to take it for an elective. It was an easy A but a lot more reading and writing than I thought. |
