I am nowhere near a science major, so I was a bit apprehensive when I selected this class. I went in thinking it'd be applicable to the real world, but a bit of a challenge. I must say, Dr. Slavin is great at taking a complex subject and distilling it into an easily understandable concept for the layman. The lectures are great, though they can be a bit rushed if time runs short - but she takes all content not covered off the upcoming exam. The coursework is easy, as expected for a 100-level course: 4 short, straightforward exams, essentially auto-100 weekly discussions and lecture participation activities, and a simple 3 part project. There's also extra credit worth 3% of the final grade. As long as you go to lectures and discussions, you should have no problem earning an A. I would highly recommend Dr. Slavin to all students looking for a science credit! |

I'm a computer science major with really no science background, so for me, the majority of the topics in this class were brand new to me. However, the format of the class makes it very attainable for anyone to get an A, if not an A+. I attended lecture regularly for the participation assignments but never payed attention just because I have a short attention span so every time a midterm came up I had to intensively cram study a day or 2 before. I will say there is quite a lot of content to memorize but if you actually pay attention in lecture and take notes, that would definitely lighten the load for a midterm. There are 3 midterms and a non-cumulative final. All of the exams are very straightforward, and everything you need to answer is given in lecture (no tricks). Discussions are mandatory as there are graded assignments each class, but they are free 100s. The Diet Analysis Project is 3 parts and also free 100s (also found it pretty insightful). If you keep a good exam average across all 3 midterms and also do the extra credit which was a 2.5% grade boost (another 0.5% if you voted for who had the best extra credit assignment in your section), you can get away with just not studying for the final since its only 10% of your graded, which is what I did, otherwise I could've easily ended with an A+. Regarding the professor herself, shes very kind and seems very knowledgeable. I didn't find her lectures super engaging but the effort was definitely there. Would highly recommend this class if you're interested in learning about nutrition or just want an easy DSNS credit. |

I'm not going to lie, I found this class very easy (already being a science major) when basically the first and second exams are just elements of nutrition like carbs, protein, fats, body systems, vitamins, minerals, and water. Dr. Slavin is so sweet. On the first day of classes, my lecture started at 11 and she stood up infront of the class and asked everyone if her microphone was too loud because it's still early and she didn't want to hurt anyones ears. I went up and talked to her a few times after lectures and she always gave me answers to the best of her ability. Sometimes my questions went past the scope of her knowledge, and she will tell you that because she doesn't want to spread misinformation. Make sure you take notes, and use the book if you are confused because you have to get it for the program that runs the diet analysis project. Lectures were kinda boring at times, but you have to go since there is lecture participation points. Highly recommend this class and Dr. Slavin as a professor. |

Material was challenging at times but she was passionate about what she was teaching and wanted her students to succeed. I found the tests difficult but if you study enough you will be fine. Every class was just writing notes of a slide show the whole time so it was not very interesting or interactive. Still an enjoyable class because the material is very interesting. Would recommend. |

easy class, sometimes hard to stay awake during lectures |

Professor Slavin is a good professor. Lectures can be boring, since we never really went in depth about any topic (since it is a 100 level class). Especially when going over micronutrients, lecture got pretty repetitive. I think that she'd teach better in a higher level class, but you can tell she really cares about what she's teaching. The content is fairly easy, but it is an entirely memorization-based class so be warned. I think there were some things on exams that I don't remember ever seeing on the slides, so that was a bit annoying, but it was 1 or maybe 2 questions at most on each exams. There are also participation activities every class that take 1 or 2 minutes at most to do. Overall, since the content is all memorization-based and on the slides, it's pretty easy to study for. I studied the day before for all the exams and did fine. |

Easy A, lectures and discussion are super boring but mandatory. The information you learn is pretty interesting and practical, only thing is they make you buy a $70 textbook because you "need" the nutrition calculator (which is only used on like 2 assignments). What a waste! |

Easiest class I have ever taken. If you need a science without lab credit, take this! I do think that class was sometimes boring as hell, but to be honest I think it depends on how you frame it. Nutrition is so relevant that if you "trick" yourself into caring about what you eat and your health, you'll find it interesting. Pros: -easy as hell, aim for like an A or A+, GPA booster -3 Midterms, all multiple choice, only worth %10 -topic relevant to basically everyone Cons -Discussion is mandatory because you do graded assignments and its the majority of your grade -You have to pay like 70-80$ for the dumb cengage textbook because that how you do one of your major projects Advice: One of the comments mentioned that there's a lot of memorization, which I agree only if you never go to lecture. To minimize study time, -Go to most lectures and type your notes (I actually enjoyed this since its an easy class, its a nice little break from all my other classes) -since this class is memorization heavy, going to class helps you get familiar with the content -To study the only thing you need to do is briefly review the slides, you can type the facts/points that are important and then do the study guide she posts and memorize it. I always studied the day before the midterm and did great because of this strategy. If you don't go to class, it's a lot harder since the slides are like 30-50 long, but I genuinely don't know if there exists a science credit easier than this |

You can tell Professor Slavin really does care about nutrition, but since the class is such a big lecture it's harder to be engaged, especially when class consists of reading off a powerpoint that has all the information you need. This being said, I am not a STEM major and found this class to be pretty easy and incredibly educational if you are passionate about nutrition (a STEM class that actually impacts your life!). While there is a lot of material, study guides are posted a week before the Exams and as long as you memorize you will be fine. I never really paid attention during lecture and would just study a week before and am ending with an A in the class, I reccomend taking this if you need a STEM gen ed or are curious about the subject. |

Overall, the lecture is really boring. It is a required attendance because there's a participation activity that you need to be in class to do. The professor just reads off of slides and doesn't add anything. The textbook is required because it comes with a nutrition monitoring tool that you need for a projects. Other than that it wasn't horrible. I didn't pay attention in class, studied 1 hour before the exams and got 70+ on each one. It's not too difficult. **beware sometimes she'll get really mad at noise and start yelling for everyone to be quiet** |

Key Points: - This class is not easy. 100-level class but this is harder than some of my 300-level classes. The amount of information you need to memorize is insane. - You learn off slides. If there was no participation activity that required mandatory attendance you can bet I would not be there. The professor does not really add any valuable information in my opinion. - You are going to need to pay 60 bucks guaranteed because you need to use a tool that you can't pirate. Beware. - The TAs are not going to do a whole lot for you, be careful on the discussion activity stuff because they can be super nitpicky. Follow all directions carefully and closely. - If you are a memorization demon, this class is for you. We learned about all of cell biology in one 50-minute class period. If you are looking for an easy gen ed credit to knock out look elsewhere. Honestly, if you are hoping to learn about nutrition you are going to learn about it but not very effectively. I would say that you should probably just avoid this class and this professor for sure. |
