AMAZING professor. Easily one of my favorite classes/professors I have ever taken! You can tell how much he cares about both the course and his students. Like some of the other reviewers said, this class is a contract grading class and you have to meet certain criteria to receive an A. This class is more focused on writing and it can feel like a lot at times but Dr. Stewart is so gracious and understanding. The class is two and a half hours long but the time honestly flies by + we usually get a 10-15 minute break every class. The class is also very very interesting and I gained a lot of new knowledge about the US prison system. Additionally, we got to tour the Maryland Women's Correctional Institute and it was hands down one of the coolest/most intriguing experiences I have ever had. If you're debating taking this class you should take it!! I loved Dr. Stewart's teaching style and how personable he is to the point where I might enroll in one of his Crim. classes in the future!! 10/10 class & professor!

Easily one of the best, if not the best, professor I've taken at this school. The course and content itself is not inherently super interesting, but the way Dr. Stewart discusses and presents the material is so good. He really cares about the content and about the students, very understanding of personal circumstances, and a chill dude all around. His class never feels like it takes too long, and the in-class activities and shenanigans were always memorable. Loved this class, but mostly because of Dr. Stewart, probably my favorite class I've taken so far. If you want to engage with it, it'll stay with you forever, but if you're just looking for a smooth course to get through your credits, Dr. Stewart is great for both. He was flexible with assignment dates if students seemed stressed and spent a lot of time clarifying assignments if anyone had any questions. 10/10 would recommend. He keeps class light and fun most of the time, but knows how to drive home a point really poignantly when he needs to, and that is the best class experience you can have.

Wonderful professor, he listens to our suggestions, very lenient with extensions, and teaches like a real person, not a lecturer. I would strongly suggest to take this professor for any course.

He's so chill and nice. Other review explained the contract grading system that he employed and it basically made the class a free A. Also, I played games on my laptop like all the time and never participated in the discussion during the 3 hour classes and he never called me out once even though he probably should have. So he's a goat for that

Wonderful professor, and he is a super great guy. For this course, he sets up a "contract grading system" where you basically sign-up for whatever letter final letter grade you want to receive in this class, and you will be given a set of criteria for you to complete throughout the semester in order to receive that letter grade. There is a weekly reading, and for the A contract grade, you need to do about 10 Perusall annotations (which are just 6 annotations on the readings per week), 8 discussion questions (which is quite literally just a simple one-sentence question sparking conversation during in-class discussions), and 6 reading memos (simple and small 1-2 page reflection on the selected readings). That's literally it and all for an A. No exams and no final. I got all my work done over the first half of the semester, so I barely did any work for this course in the second half. The class is very interesting and Professor Stewart sets it up in a way where you want to read to learn as opposed to reading to get a grade. Overall, super great guy and fantastic course. Highly recommend.

He is so great. This class was 3 hours, but Professor Stewart would always bring energy to the classroom and give us a break in the middle of class. Overall easy and straightforward class and he really cares about our wellbeing.

Such an amazing guy. He's the first professor I've ever had that made sure students' mental health comes first. Besides that, he knows his material super well and makes class interesting. A lot of focus on cases going on in real-time which makes the class more relevant. Exams and classwork are not difficult if you pay attention, which is truly not hard to do. He also always does live zoom classes which is AMAZING when you can't make it to class. Overall a 11/10 professor.
