FIRE198 Expecting an A- Anonymous 07/26/2025 |
I had Professor Strey (she insists you pronounce it like the word "try" with an S at the beginning) for both FIRE120 and FIRE198, and I'm taking her for FIRE298 next semester. I'd recommend her simply due to how easy her class is. FIRE120 was the easiest class to skate by in that I took in my first year; 120 was definitely easier than 198. Professor Strey is very nice and easy to talk to, and very willing to help you out if you ask her. My least favorite thing was that she tends to cold call, but to be fair to her, not a soul wanted to raise their hand all year. I kinda felt bad for her because participation was super low, but she had no idea how to get people to participate besides cold calling. Honestly, her class is really easy and low effort, especially FIRE120, so I would recommend taking her for that. For climate computing, if you don't know what you're doing and get a bad group you could be screwed, because at least somebody needs to understand how to do everything. She tries to cram a lot of the legit climate computing into the last 4-6 weeks, including 2 separate group projects, so beware of that. That caused time pressure and some stress from a class that should probably not be your first priority. Didn't mind Professor Strey overall. |

FIRE120 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 12/12/2023 |
she's nice, but honestly a little too nice at times. the grading in fire120 is set up in a way that you can get greatly penalized for having incompetent teammates (the "team assignments", which comprise a good chunk of your grade, are designed so that each person does a part and then you all submit together and all receive the same grade when almost every part of the assignments are meant to be done independently), and dr. strey is a bit of an enabler when it comes to bad teammates. she's refused to intervene when teammates don't pull their weight, stating that "receiving an email can be jarring" or that "some students don't come into college ready to fly". the teams in fire120 are randomly assigned, so if you get placed in a bad team, good luck. if not, then the class will be a breeze. |
