Good professor and cares about his students. He can be a lot at 9 AM but he is a good lecturer and teacher. The material is very difficult. He requires a textbook that you need and will use every class. He will help you and give you tips about taking exams. There were two midterms and a final. I struggled in his class and the first two exams were rough, but the final was much better. But I had to study super hard and change the way I study, which he recommended and gave me tips on how to succeed. He's a good dude. But the class is hard so you definitely have to work. |

classes were kind of boring but they got the main ideas through properly. discussions were mandatory since we had activity sheets due based on completion. there were 10 exercise sets, and all of them were pretty easy since it was just material covered in class. the exams also weren’t too hard—redoing the exercise sets and activity sheets were pretty good preparation, especially since we were allowed to have a cheat sheet (8x11 paper, front and back). |

Oh my glorious Erich, where do I begin..... Erich, my pookie bear. You are the sunshine in my otherwise dark world. Being in your class is as invigorating and amazing as anyone could be. You made everything that much brighter in your cargo shorts and loud style of teaching. Your class will not be something I will forget any time soon. :) |

Took ESE for his final semester teaching at UMD. He's fantastic, passionate, and makes BSTAT an easier learn for someone who doesn't care about it at all. The class is not as bad as people say. For future students-- study off the practice exam! the actual exam is pretty similar with the topics (not exact), so studying the practice test instead of the notes is more efficient. 3 30-question, multiple-choice exams along with a heavy curve (79.5% was the lower border for an A-). If this class is taught in the future in any way similarly to how ESE taught it, you'll be okay. Happy retirement Erich! |

Good professor however, I will say there was a significant lack of material to prepare enough for the exams. The workload is minimal but either you get the material or you don't and some people without prior statistics knowledge might find this class very difficult. He gives good videos reviewing the homework which are very helpful and since it was his last semester he gave a fat 10% curve. Enthusiastic guy and a fun lecturer glad I could take him in his last year of teaching. |

Erich is quite literally the most bizarre person I've ever encountered. He runs around the classroom like an animal and bangs on the board. He's very enthusiastic about statistics, which I guess is nice, however, 95% of the room does not feel the same way. So he pretty much always comes off as really annoying. He is way too obnoxious about students not being on their phones. On the other hand, he's a decent professor mostly because he gives a lot of opportunities to save your GPA since the content is so hard. Lectures are only worth attending if you can really lock in and pay attention. |

This professor is amazing. He will help you whenever you need. He's very clear with his expectations, but I would definitely go to class because it helps a lot. All completed notes are online though. Grades are fair. You get a notes page front and back that you get to create for every exam. Love this professor, when you were in class even though it was early he would be very energetic and made sure you were awake. There are no phones or any electronics allowed and you will be called out if you have it out. |

He's a good professor, explains well and tries to add some enjoyment to the lectures. It can be a bit difficult but if you study hard enough, you can pass. I had some challenging parts, but I was able to pass. He changes the grader borders depending on the scores of the three exams. His class is mainly exam heavy, so make sure to stay on top of things. He does have you rely on the course packet, which does not really contain everything, so you will need to find other resources. |

I found him to be overall annoying and not very considerate of others, but he was a really good teacher. His class is engaging and you can tell hes been teaching forever because it felt like a scripted preformance. He used to allow his exams to be open note but changed it to only one page front and back. That honestly was enough but still an inconvience considering my friends had the class a lot easier than me. Overall I would give him 5 stars if he didn't erk me- gee willikers |

Just an all around good dude. Class is super straight forward. If you show up and do the work you will be just fine. People seem to get bent out of shape about the phone policy. Erich lets everyone know you or someone you know paid for you to be in class and not on your phone. Not really a problem unless your chronically online. Take this course while you can. |

Good instructor overall -- he was someone who definitely kept you awake during class, and was always willing to clarify and reteach whatever needs his students address, which I found really helpful. The tests were quite difficult for me, at least, but I also tend to be a bad test taker -- the material on the tests are just like the activity sheets and exercise sets he gives you, just a tad more conceptual. His curve is magnificent in the end, but I recommend that you actually take this class seriously if you have a hard time understanding mathematical concepts, like me. |

His teaching style was less than effective. He would go over concepts in class with the most elementary examples and then the homeworks and exams were questions that were extremely difficult. His class is definitely not difficult to pass as he applies a large curve but if you're interested in learning something, he's not the person to do it from. The TAs for this class also have no idea what they're doing which makes doing well on the exams much more difficult. |

Pretty good professor overall. Sometimes his thought process and how he teaches things is a little difficult to follow, but for the most part he does a good job of explaining. Honestly don't know why there are so many negative reviews about Erich. He's honestly a pretty good teacher. You just have to make sure to pay attention and buy his course packet (which is really helpful because he includes additional practice problems for you). I think you just need to put effort into this class. At first this class was hard for me, but it got easier as the semester progressed. As time goes on, the activity sheets get so much easier. I also feel like the content got easier, so if you didn't do well initially, there is still a chance for you to succeed. Like what others have said, he does drop the borders down at the end of the semester so you can still get an A even with a 85% ish. There are homework assignments, which he has help videos that are actually helpful. Again, like with the content and activity sheets, the homework got a lot easier as the semester went on and I find myself not needing the help videos. Erich is actually an engaging teacher. He is very animated and funny. He also allows for students to participate which is very helpful to make sure you know how to actually get the numbers. Just make sure to not have your phones out during class. Take BMGT230B with him! |

Fine professor! You cannot have electronics in the class; however, he makes the class engaging and is very good at explaining the concepts. As long as you complete the homework, show up to discussion, and exam reviews, you should be able to do well in this course. I believe Erich is fair in what he expects from his students, and the class is graded on a bell curve. |

Erich is a fantastic teacher who will give you everything you need to succeed. He goes over everything you need to know for the exams in class and gives video explanations and answer keys for every homework assignment. You can miss about 30% of the homework problems and still get full credit. He clearly and consistently communicates every expectation for class and constantly will give reminders about them. He's also a really funny and approachable guy who is GREAT at answering questions in class. The only thing I will say is that you can study a LOT for the exams and still do mediocre. I went into the second exam having studied for literal days feeling great about the content and I got a C. He curves the whole class though so it's ok. |

Overall a great teacher. He is very goofy but it makes his style of teaching very engaging. There are 3 exams and they are challenging but as long as you study you should do fine. For the tests you get 1 cheat sheet (double sided). I recommend going to all the lectures because he explains the material clearly. He does post the completed notes after. Also, at the end of the semester instead of a curve he opens up the borders of what an A would be. So like an 84 could possible be an A-. |

One of the better professors imo. He posts completed notes to Canvas, so if you miss class it is all there. Exams are 30 multiple choice, not too difficult if you study. You're allowed to have one sheet of handwritten notes, front and back, on each exam. Exams are not cumulative, not even the final. If you put in time, it won't be hard to do well. He also has a crazy curve. I think like 80% of the class passes, might be even higher than that. |

Believe me, take this professor and life will not be hard. The class is literally as straightforward as it can get. He's a great professor- super engaging and he explains things super thoroughly. His lectures have good flow but aren't totally boring because he really does know what he's talking about and that makes it way easier to learn. His lectures and homework explain step by step everything you need to know how to do for exams, which are 100% multiple choice and non-cumulative WITH a cheat sheet allowed- just know how to do the problems in the course packet and you'll be fine. |

He has a nice curve, you don't need to get all of the homework questions correct to get a 100%, every homework assignment has a corresponding questions and answers video where he goes over what he is asking for and does some examples, open note quizzes that are all multiple choice, textbook is 20 bucks that he made and literally you just come to class to fill out - and on top of all of that he is not boring and actually engages you in class so that you keep coming back. |

I thought the content of this class was very interesting and the professor was very engaging and enthusiastic. He definitely kept me awake in the morning. It's not hard to get an A as long as you come to class and discussion and study for exams. There are three exams, all open note and none cumulative, weekly homework sets, and weekly discussion activities that make up the final grade. I don't understand the hate around this man. You can use notes and resources on all of the exams (2 midterms and final) and the discussion is just a worksheet with a group and graded on completion. Makes you buy a $20 binder full of notes that he types out. Every type of question and reasoning is in these notes and you can use them during the exam. Only need around a 22/30 on the weekly worksheet homework to get a 100% for that assignment. He has an abundance of resources which again you can use on the exams. Has love and passion for his students and the course. Curves the class by around 7%. |

I am sorry but the people saying you can put in effort to this class that will control your grade are wrong. Studying the course packet and old exams does not help at all on the exams. You feel like you understand the content in class and then fail all the exams and it is very frustrating. Erich in class was entertaining but his exams are very difficult and hard to study for. Overall, exams are very hard and discussion sections are unhelpful. My first grade lower than an A. |

I really enjoyed this class and the professor. All the materials you need are in a course packet that only costs $20. The course is 10 homework, 10 discussion sheets that you do in groups, and three exams. The exams are a big part of your grade and that is where most people don't do well but the exams are open notes and you can use any materials covered in the class. None of the exams are curved but the overall grade is curved so at this point an A- is about 85-86% and it continues for each letter grade. The professor is very energetic and really helps you and wants you to do your best overall. Some people hate this class but I really enjoyed it and thought he was a great professor. |

Dude is the most energetic person ever. He is super passionate and detailed when teaching. Many people will claim it is difficult but Erich lets you take whatever notes in that you want for the exam and gives two hours for only 25 questions. More than fair amount of time and the questions asked are just like those in class or on homeworks. The discussion is painful, though. Erich is one of the best professors I have ever had. The course material can be challenging on its own but he teaches in a way that makes it easy to comprehend. He is engaging and a goof, and he cares a lot about his students and wants to see them succeed. He goes above and beyond to provide all the resources possible to ensure that his students do well but you do have to put in the work and actually put those resources to use. The exams are open note but I would still advise going to lecture and discussion because you have to understand the material without the notes if ya want to do well. Tbh it's hard to do bad in this class, everything is given to you and Erich is always open to help out students. It's a waste to not use all the resources you have. He is straightforward in his teaching style. He has tons of enthusiasm towards teaching - he is an energetic, quirky, and funny guy. He embraces the class and clearly loves what he does. He deserves a lot of credit for what he does. In terms of the course, BMGT230 is a class that came a bit easier to me as I took AP Statistics in high school. I can only speak from my perspective on that in terms of the class and material overall. Lots of overlaps in content and topics. The exams are about going the extra mile in terms of what you've learned (as is the case with many college classes) - for example, being able to work backwards off of what you've learned, or interpreting what a certain equation or rule means. |

Eric is a great professor, he always comes to class excited and ready to teach. He provides a vast packet of notes to help you understand the material as he goes over it during lectures. The exams are open notes which are nice. You have one homework a week where you will do problems based on the concepts learned in lectures which are graded on accuracy, In discussions, you form groups and complete a worksheet which is graded on completion. The grade boundaries for the course are really good this semester a 64% is a C- which makes it extremely to pass the course as long as you put some effort in, I personally didn't put much effort in which affected my grade. He also makes review videos that help you understand the course more. He doesn't record lectures so make sure to go to class. No tech in class if he sees you on your phone he'll call you out. If you know you're bad at math then you may struggle but comparatively, to other math-based classes, this one is fairly simple. Erich is pretty chill but sometimes is weird about the use of technology in his class. He stops the entire class if he catches anyone on their phone which feels a bit High Schoolish to me (who cares if you pay attention it's your grade at stake). Erich is one of the best professors I have ever had in my life. I took his statistics course back in 2018 and I'm so glad I attended almost every lecture. In his words, if you skip class you are just wasting your parents' money, so why skip class? His course notes were extremely helpful, as he went thru it with detail and taught us straight from them as if they were a textbook. We knew exactly what to learn and focus on especially with the tons of examples and visuals in the notes. The weekly discussions and homeworks also helped me alot in preparing for the exams. No tricks, no BS, if you knew how to do the problems you were guaranteed to do well on the exams. I totally wish more professors adopted this same type of "course notes" teaching style for their classes. Can you imagine if Erich was somehow cloned so that those other Erichs taught 221 accounting or 340 finance or STAT400? I would have learned so much easier and done so much better on exams. For comparison's sake I got an A+ in 230 but in STAT400 I only got a C (fortunately I was able to do P/F lol). Erich, if you're reading this please think about teaching more classes besides 230 man. You would be doing every business student a huge favor. |

If you’re okay at math, this class should be fine. Erich gives you everything you need to understand the material, although he will put 2 to 4 new or newly phrased questions on exams. You get two attempts for every exam and at least for the pandemic semester(s), they are open-note. There are three exams including the final, which is just treated like another exam, and they make up 80% of your grade. Only TAs have office hours, but they can definitely be helpful, only thing is you can’t ask questions about an exam in between two of its test dates which sucks if you genuinely don’t know how to solve a problem that you’ve never seen before. If you’re taking the class at home, just buy the course packet or print it yourself, it’s so much easier to follow along the material if you have it in front of you rather than using the online version. The class is completely asynch, but you get a dose of Erich’s personality through the videos. I thought he was nice and I didn’t experience this myself, but according to our class groupme, he wasn’t lenient at all about late work or extensions or taking an exam at a later date if it was for anything but having a conflicting class or another exam, which is really sucky in a pandemic. The exams are also always some time in the evening and not set during class time. He posts a different number of lecture videos each week which can also be a little disorienting as you don’t know what to expect with how long you’ll be watching them or how many videos you need to watch to do the weekly problems. There are two weekly problem sets, one that is a little more difficult that you work on with an assigned group and that I think is graded only on completion but he wasn’t really clear on that and one that you do on your own that is pretty straight forward and graded on accuracy, but you can still get a question or two wrong and get a 100. To study for tests, redoing these will help. He posts the answer keys after they are due for both and review videos going through the problems for the exercise set only (the one you do on your own). He curves at the end of the semester based on the class, this fall an 84 was an A-. |

Erich is super high energy and tries his best to make bstat fun. The course packet is awesome and makes it easy to take notes and study. It's easy to tell that Erich cares a lot about seeing his students do well, as he makes himself available and allows note sheets for exams. ERICH S-E IS THE MAN! |

No complaints about Erich- he's very energetic and engaging during lectures. However, this class can be very difficult for people who aren't accustomed to statistics. |

Erich is awesome and truly cares about his students. He does everything that he can do to help his students succeed. BMGT230 is not an easy class but if you work hard, you will do well. He also curves the class based off of class averages. Erich makes coming to class each day entertaining, just don't take out your phones! |

This guy really wants you to do well. Instead of a textbook he uses a course packet that you have to buy for $20-ish. He follows the packet completely and it has everything you need–you won't even need a notebook for his class. There's an old examination in the packet before each exam which is VERY helpful, but unfortunately there aren't any other sources outside of that for practice problems so for the exam you mostly just review the problems he did during the notes and memorize formulas. That being said, he really wants you to do well, is very responsive to emails and questions, and offers a weekly help-session to go over the homework. He's so energetic that it's hard to not be engaged–he'll literally be jumping around the lecture hall and (playfully) yelling about statistics. I didn't find the material engaging but the class is still very well run. |

I have nothing bad to say about Erich, but this class is TOUGH. Easily the hardest class I have taken in my life, requires a LOT of work. You either get it or you don't. No in between. My lack of stars is because of the class, not about Erich. |

Erich is the best teacher I have ever had. He teaches stat (BMGT230) in a very fun and entertaining way that makes things just stick in your head. The exams are fair and often resemble problems in the exercise sets and activity sheets. I had never taken stat before and I love his class and teaching style. HIGHLY recommend! |

Erich is a great teacher, my crappy grade in the class isn't a reflection of his teaching, I'm just bad at math in general even though I worked my a** off for this class. Erich is very lively and uses up the entire lecture time which is great. His homework problems appear on the exams which is also good and he gives you a full sized front and back piece of paper to use for notes on each exam, and 3 sheets on the final (all 8 1/2 x 11). Like I said, I was determined to do good on these exams and I would study hours on end but clearly to no avail for myself. Regardless, this class and Erich are unavoidable so you don't really have a choice to take him or not... But the class won't be too bad! |

Loved Erich, he really does a great job at keeping you invested in the class with his goofiness/humor. He knows his subject well, and demonstrates it with great elaboration. My only frustration is that when it came to test questions/prep his only answer is "anything & everything is fair game". Unfortunately due to the vagueness I found myself struggle on the first test, because he didn't just give us plug & chug questions but also conceptual ones. While it's technically 'fair game' it would have been nice to be made aware (he teaches to the material, not the test which I understand), unfortunately his homeworks have minimal conceptual questions but otherwise do prepare you well for tests. |

Great professor! A lot of fun, the notes were very easy since he gives you the packet and you just have to fill in the blanks. I had already taken stats in high school though, which made things easier, and it seemed other students were struggling with what seemed like simple concepts. Do a lot of practice problems, and ask questions. |

This class isn't too difficult, but you have to understand how things work. It's not enough to know formulas, you have to understand the inner workings. Studer-Ellis is very helpful and frequently asks in lectures if anyone has questions. He tries very hard to make sure his students succeed as much as possible. That said, he can be strict sometimes. If you have an 89.9, he won't round it up to an A. If he offers extra credit, you have to be in the right lecture. However, all of this is clearly stated on the first day, so it shouldn't come as a surprise. He is tough but fair. |

Studer-Ellis was a very knowledgeable and fun professor who was easy to learn from. He taught the material in a very organized manner which made the fairly difficult material easier to learn and understand. Going to lectures is important, but I wouldn't recommend signing up for the 8AM lecture if possible as it is sometimes hard to stay awake. |

Awesome Professor, its worth going to lecture. The best way to tackle this class is to write terms down for each part of each equation and do a detailed note sheet, write the topic it is on and the conditions about it. If your note sheet is good you will do very well here. And also do the HWs, not doing one will leave u clueless. |

Excellent professor with an excellent ability to teach the material. My first statistics course ever, and I totally excelled thanks to his teachings. He doesn't require a text. Instead, students pay like $20 for a copy of HIS notes, which are phenomenal. You must go to class though in order to grasp an understanding of the notes, but class attendence is well worth it. Attend his classes, go to discussions, and study (homework problems, old exams, and activity sheets) and you can definitely earn an A!! Exams are very fair and all or the majority of problems are very similary to problems covered in homework/activity sheets. Highly recommended for anyone looking to take stats. |

S-E was a really good professor. He uses a course packet that he created himself which he follows during his lectures so you don't have to write a lot and you don't have to buy a textbook. He also gives a lot of review sessions. Some tests are challenging while others are easier, but overall the course is enjoyable. |

ES is a very good professor. He is always willing to help students if they need it (he holds review sessions before every homework assignment is due and before every exam). He is very energetic however his persona does tend to get tiresome towards the end of the semester. The class itself is pretty simple as long as you do the practice exams in the course packet and make a decent cheat sheet. Its importnt to do the practice exams because he often reuses questions. For the final about 1/4 or more of the questions came from the first 3 exams we had taken. |

The best teacher I've ever had here at UMD. Very serious about getting us to learn Stats and succeed. He even offered a help session for our homeworks. He offers extra credit to help boost our grade because there is not much of a curve. If you go to every class, every lecture(which are always entertaining), do every homework correctly, have a good cheat sheet, and do your best on the exams(which are hard, but similar to practice exams that he gives us), then you are going to do well. He is always there to help, and I was so thankful for that. To tell you the truth, I took another stats course and used Studer-Ellis' notes to get me through that class, and A-ced it. The course is very challenging, but its worth it in the end. |

Took the class Fall 2007. Going to lecture makes this class significantly easier and likewise, skipping makes it way harder. Must attend discussion to turn in homework and do activities that are worth points. Tests are much easier if you do the practice exams beforehand (they're not difficult to begin with, really). He is an energetic animated professor, really makes coming to lecture worth it. Gives extra credit during lecture but doesn't announce when and you must be at your lecture (as opposed to going to a different one). Overall great class |

If you need a stat requirement but not necessarily business stat, don't take this class, because its probably the hardest of them. But if you need to take this class, just become familiar with old exam problems and practice problems before the test, because they are very similar. People tend not to do very well on the exams, and depending on how people are doing, he will give extra credit, which is his version of a curve. Studer-Ellis is very animated and fun.. he wants students to succeed and is always willing to give extra help. A lot of students just find the material challenging and you will have to study! |

I took this class Fall 2004, and from what I hear it has changed a lot. He is a great professor. SE is very enthusiastic and wants his students to succeed. He is always accessible outside of class, each week he held a session to ask questions about the homework. Before exams, he would host a 2 hour review session. Each week there is a problem set due and an activity sheet to do in discussion on Friday. They are graded on a very lenient scale. He uses a course packet that is loaded with practice problems and old exams. If you work the problems and old exams you will do well on his tests--he often uses the same problems as from the packet, homework or activity sheets. He HATES when students arrive late or leave early. He will stop class until these students are seated or out of the room. Overall, it isn't too difficult of a class if you do the studying and practice and GO TO CLASS! They really are not boring so I don't see why anybody would have an issue with them. |
