For this being her first semester teaching, she did a good job. Chemistry can be difficult to teach, but she didn't make it that confusing and she was always very nice. Yes, she would make tiny mistakes through lectures, but she's not a bad teacher. You will have to rely on outside resources to help you fully learn for exams and sometimes homework, but she's a solid professor. |

She's really nice and is very responsive to emails. Her exams are fair and the class is curved with an 85% being an A with that boundary having the opportunity to go lower if she feels like not enough students are doing well. She’s an okay lecturer but if you want to do well you’ll have to look at outside resources. I feel like this is true for almost all STEM courses however. The only complaint, and it's a big complaint, is that she’ll still be teaching new content a week before an exam and that content will be on the exam. The stuff she goes over last tends to be the most difficult topics as well. Overall, she’s a solid teacher. |

Stump is a brand new teacher, so this may not be an accurate review for following semesters. However she is very sweet and willing to help students (I have been to office hours many times and it has helped a lot). However, her lectures are set up bad and I often have to read the textbook to find definitions and how to solve problems. My GSS leader saved me for these exams (shoutout Amy!). But her averages for exams were pretty high (>70% averages each exam). I just wish she would communicate with her TA more because they explain things differently. She also has a lot of grades put in for cushioning. Since our grades are pretty high she hasn't changed the cutoff for an A (85%) since students are doing well in the class. I would take her because you would get a good grade, but just put in the extra work to actually understand the material. |

She is a new teacher so I feel lthat she needs to get into a groove of things. But other than that she seems very nice and overall, the course made sense. Additionally gen chem is a difficult class no matter what professor you have so PLEASE study. |

Stump is wonderful! Yes,shes a bit inexperienced but I find that it makes her more relatable and understanding of us as students. She really wants each of us to understand the material. No matter the chem course you take,YOU WILL BE SELF TEACHING. It will only get harder as you move further in the chem courses and you have less bounce back from bad grades. Chem courses are not easy,do not take chem courses if you do NOT have a backbone. She goes at a steady pace so we understand the topics, sometimes she could go a bit faster but I appreciate her taking the time to ensure understanding. If you show up,ask questions, and attend discussion-you will do fine. You get what you put into the course. Most people who have trouble with this professor either have a chip on their shoulder or are used to cruising through classes. |

Honestly she is not a bad professor, for her first semester teaching the course I would like to applaud her for not making chemistry to confusing and complex. She thoroughly explains topics and her exams are not trying to trick/confuse you which is hard to say about other chem131 professors. I originally registered to take the class with dr. stocker last fall and within the first week I dropped it because of how complicated she made the topics. I had friends who ended up sticking that class out and cried almost every week about it. This was not the case with Ms. stump. I was nervous to come back to the topic after struggling with a different professor and she makes the class much more clear and manageable. I will say the grading on exams is a little inconsistent from what we learned in class but not bad enough to really cause an issue i ended up with around 83 and 85 on the first two exams and feel like I am successful in that class |

I personally think she's a great person. I hear people complain about how slow she goes, but I feel like she explains everything in detail, and goes slow enough for you to really understand the material. I hate when lecturers go through like 1000 topics in one lecture, but she stays at a steady pace. The tests aren't hard, they're very short. |

Ms. Stump is a new instructor for the CHEM131 lecture this semester. As a student returning to chemistry after a significant period away from the subject, I found the course presented some challenges. While I appreciate Ms. Stump's efforts in teaching the material, I personally would have benefited from an instructor with more experience. The pace and assumed prior knowledge level sometimes made it difficult to fully grasp the foundational concepts she presented. I ended up relying heavily on self-teaching through a paid subscription to Pearson+ modules and practice questions, which got me through the concepts more than the class itself. I literally stopped attending lectures. I should have paid for the Pearson+ subscription at the beginning of the semester instead of the clicker subscription for attendance/in-class questions. Again, I’ll give her credit for stepping into a tough role, but I found the experience harder than it needed to be. I also observed a very strict approach to policies and deadlines in the course. While I understand the importance of structure in a college setting, the lack of flexibility at times felt counterproductive to fostering a supportive learning environment. Her strictness, no exceptions, and no flexibility felt like she was trying to set a firm tone as a new professor. For students who may encounter unexpected challenges or require a slightly different pace of learning, a more adaptable approach could be more conducive to their success. It's important to remember that students come from diverse academic backgrounds and may require varying levels of support. I get that she’s new, and teaching isn’t easy, but I wish she’d treated us more as individuals rather than assuming everyone’s trying to game the system. Flexibility and understanding go a long way toward helping students succeed, especially in a subject as demanding as chemistry. In hindsight, I’d have picked a more experienced professor who could meet me where I was at. I hope this review helps students make an informed decision when choosing future CHEM courses. |

I really love this professor. After taking another professor last semester for chem and dropping it because I was failing the class due to how difficult it was, trust me when I say Stump genuinely goes in depth into the material and goes at a steady pace. Her lectures and discussion worksheets are exactly what's on the exam. She is very open to answering questions during class and explains thoroughly. I highly recommend professor Stump for CHEM131 especially if you don't have a background in chem. |

she seems like a nice person but cannot teach to save her life... everything is set up horribly and new topics will be sprung onto you with the worst explanations ever. it is hard to retain any information in this class; everything seems to be 1000000x times more complicated than it should be. The organic chemistry tutor is the only reason I understand... save yourself and don't take this professor |

I have never written a review for a professor before, but it is baffling to me how this class is set up. This professor is teaching us new material 2 days before an exam, yet it's still going to be included in the exam. Decides to bring up an even harder topic on a Friday and tells us to memorize it. We had only one lecture session to go over this and she brings it up the last 10 minutes of lecture. This has to be a joke. Dont understand how this professor expects us to learn this way. Bringing up 2 new topics and they'll be in the same exam. It's like she took her sweet time teaching us the fundamentals of an atom and the next thing you know-- we got polyatomic ions and now you have to memorize all of that. Should've just started from there so we had more time to review that. Don't choose this professor. |
