Your going to teach yourself in this class, so be prepared for that. Colleen is sort of rude sometimes.. idek how to describe it honestly. Take the 5-week or 12-week plan to complete this class. There is no honest reason to do the whole 15 weeks. In class as well you will work in groups. She doesn't teach much unless asked first. |

God awful. She knows how to do math but nothing about social skills. No consideration for any student. Extremley rude and just plain inconsiderate. Very staunch in her opinions (she hates students) |

I had a concussion and she wouldn't let me not take a test. After I took the test and failed and met with her in person she pulled out the test and began making fun of mistakes on it. For example she said "wow its like you cant read" and "Do you not understand math." When I reminded her again that my head was bleeding everywhere in the health center a few days prior after her rude comments she said "Grow up this is college and stop making excuses." I also had family crisis a few weeks before on top of that. Every other professor was kind and understanding Mrs. Terpos and her behavior are an exception at UMD. I wont take the time to share my thoughts on work ethic either as I feel that I have already said enough. |

Don't take this class if you don't need to. You can always take the Math placement test and get into a 3-credit class, but if you struggled with math in high school, then I recommend taking this class to build a strong foundation for harder math courses. Terpos as a person is rude, condescending, and unprofessional, which can make you not want to ask for help. She only teaches for the first 20 minutes of class and then puts everyone in groups to solve classwork. I would say the TAs help you more than her. As a professor, she really makes you put in effort and be accountable, which I found helpful. Learn all of the chapters because everything is on the tests, and don't start the homework at the last minute since you need to master all of the material. Study for a few hours a day, do the homework, show up to class on time, and you'll be fine. You only need a 70 or higher to pass the course, so if you do really well for most of the class, you can get a low final grade and still pass. |

Unhelpful and just plain mean/condescending. Work is easy but if anything ever comes up do not expect her to be understanding or helpful. |

Math is unnecessarily hard at UMD but Professor Terpos made it very manageable to get on track for the higher-level classes. She makes you work for your grade which I really appreciated. At some point, photomath and mathway won't get you through and she helps you learn math on your own. Terpos is willing to help and made it an enjoyable experience |

I want this to serve as a warning to incoming freshman. For your sake, take the math placement test seriously. Don’t do what I did, which was take it at 2 AM, not put in any effort, and then end up in this class. Colleen Terpos is unhelpful, condescending, difficult to work with, and has a serious attitude problem. She does the bare minimum, which is teaching for maybe ten minutes and then you spend the rest of the class with a group filling out a worksheet. It’s one of the few classes where the TA’s are actually more helpful than the teacher. As for the work load, it’s definitely manageable. It’s annoying and boring, but if you grit your teeth and stick it out you will have no issue passing the class. Just stay on top of the workload, do NOT start it at the last minute, and you’ll be good. If you do end up in this class and you’re reading this, just know that I believe in you and you can do it. Just grind it out. Good luck. |

I was nervous taking Colleen's class after I saw her ratings, but I'm glad I did because this is the first time I've actually understood math. The course is homework heavy, and she's strict about attendance but it's because she wants you to succeed. I did so well in this course that I didn't even have to take the final! If you actually want to understand math, and don't mind a professor with a bit of sarcasm, take her!! |

Colleen’s no nonsense attitude can come off as rude, but I truly don’t think it is meant to be. Besides, I think she is a great teacher. If you ask her a question, she always explains things in a way that is easy to understand. Because this course was self-paced, students worked on their own and came to class with questions. I think some students expected something else, but you could always get help from with this professor or TAs of you asked. In fact, I still go get help from Colleen now that I am onto more advanced math courses, because she explained things so well. If you have her as a professor you are in good hands! |

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! it is totally avoidable if you just retake the placement test! If for some reason you absolutely need to take this class, you can take it in 5 weeks if you stay on top of all the assignments. The class is literally just like the middle school/early high school Algebra 1 course you took just with no help from the teacher. As far as Professor Terpos goes, she was really mean all the time and made all her students believe they were going to fail. She also did not teach a single thing to anyone, all she did was stand around and watch kids do the online textbook problems for 3 HOURS! If I could put negative stars, I would |

She is ok. But at times she is mean and rude. She makes me feel more stupid and made my mindset to fail the course instead oof motivating me to pass. |

not very helpful at all. Avoid her at any cost. If you are stuck with her, you better be hella motivated and put the effort in to pass and get the hell outta this class. Her tests are hard as well. so be ready af. |

I would not recommend this woman. I had her last semester and she was very impatient and often very rude in her responses. Similar to that of a smart alec. She frequently would not assist me in exercises/problems but rather point me to the online book. This was frustrating as sometimes I needed a direct explanation as the book can be vague at times. Take somebody else. |
