I took this course as a DSHU and this was genuinely my favorite class this semester. The essay prompts were broad but this gives you a lot of freedom in how you want to go about your essay. Most people did not come to lecture since there were no quizzes or exams, and you don't really need the lecture topics to write your essays. Personally I found lectures interesting, and I am paying for the class so I tried to go to all of them. The TAs and Dr. Topper were very kind. We had the opportunity to go to the Clarice to see guest performances which was nice. |

Pretty okay in general. Didn't answer my emails, but to be fair, I should've emailed my TA because it was a discussion question, not a class question lol - 2 worksheets (go in-person to get the physical worksheet & watch documentary about the topic to fill out the worksheet). - 1 bonus worksheet (extra credit). - 3 essays/papers that increase in length. The final paper is both a paper & a presentation. - Participation in discussion is required. - Syllabus is very clear and does NOT change unless something big happens. |

While the class itself is easy, with only 3 essays, the actual lectures are impossible to sit through. However, for lecture attendance isn't mandatory, so if you don't care about learning you can skip class and still get an easy A. |

Literally, such a breeze!!!! ok, yes it was kinda boring but such an easy A+. Literally, there's no homework, no participation, discussion are only like 6-8 people max, and only like 5 assignments throughout the whole semester. 1 of them was like a song report where you have to like interview someone who's really into any music genre, 2 is like a concert report (which you write based on going on a concert either at umd or dmv area) they give you like a list and you do background research on it, and the last one was the research paper where you choose a specific genre to research and you do a presentation in discussion. That's it. The other 2 assignments were like worksheets considered as extra credit. Super easy. Take this if you can!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! |

This course isn't really what I expected. It is a pretty easy A (a few shorter papers and a longer final paper, no exams), but it is a very boring class. I would recommend another music elective if you want an interesting music course that you will be engaged in. However, if you are interested in the music from other cultures, this class would probably be good for you. |
