Tyrell is passionate and a nice professor. She seemed very knowledgeable about the topic and gets excited about the material. A lot of people like the class but personally, I found the lectures to be boring. The lectures are not difficult to follow but just not super engaging. There are clicker questions but she also allows a lot of excusals for missing clickers if you cannot make it to class. The application assignments were annoying but not super difficult. Lots of quizzes but again, not difficult.

Dr. Tyrell was so cute and sweet. Every year the TA's are different and in my opinion as a student and TA, the TA's are what help/hurt you the most, not the professor. Dr. Tyrell was great and so were the TA's but that was my luck. Good and easy PSYC class and fulfills the requirements needed.

Very engaging and easy to follow lectures. As long as you skim the readings and attend class, you will be fine.

I found Dr. Tyrell to be a very knowledgable, passionate, and approachable professor. PSYC489F was explicitly a discussion based class which was stated in both the syllabus and on day one. While not for everyone, I found this to be a really helpful way of learning because it allowed for me to exchange ideas with other students. We were expected to summarize one article and present it for the class (approximately 5 minutes), with most of the time being used for small group discussion. Summarizing the article helped me understand the concepts, as I spent more time reviewing my notes to get a better understanding of what was being discussed. Our final presentation (around 10-15 minutes) was on a scholar in the field. I found the scholar summary presentation to be less helpful, but fairly interesting as it allowed for students to experience other areas of the field that were not covered in class. Based on prior PSYC classes I wouldn't say that the presentations/public speaking was more than what would be expected in any other class. I do think that she called on certain people more often than others, though I'm uncertain if that was because people didn't participate or because she had favorites (if I could give a .5 star deduction it would be for this and the scholar summary presentation). Overall, I came out more invested in culture, psychopathology, and development due to Dr. Tyrell's class, and would take it again.

Dr. Tyrell is a very passionate professor that brought interesting anecdotes to lecture. She incorporated professional development tips that helped students understand the different career paths for common professionals involving psychology degrees!

Dr. Tyrell was an absolute delight! She made PSYC355 both enjoyable and rewarding! She has a funny sense of humor and a compassionate approach to the course and her students. When I was struggling and went to her, she showed me empathy and gave me support, which I truly appreciate. I strongly recommend her as a professor.

Dr. Tyrell is a very well informed, passionate, committed, and respectful professor. I took PSYC 221 over the summer term and it was not only incredibly engaging course material, but the pacing and assignment structure was sufficiently challenging without being overwhelming. I found her approach to teaching to be very welcoming and accessible; class consisted of lecturing with open discussions and interactive activities interspersed throughout, and even in a online synchronous classroom environment she executed this very well. As long as you prepare before class (readings, discussion boards) and engage in class (lectures, open-discussions, and activities), you will have no trouble with the quizzes and essays. Class participation is important, but as long as you make a consistent effort to contribute something (literally anything relevant to show that you are actively engaging with this material), she will appreciate it (i.e. put in real effort and your work will be recognized). Her grading is very honest and fair. I highly recommend this professor.

Dr. Tyrell is incredibly unfair, unreasonable, and unapproachable. She does not teach or communicate her expectations, yet somehow expects her students to perform at a level that is unattainable. She picks favorites, and gives those people unfair opportunities. If you're not one of her favorites, then she treats you with disrespect, and is passive aggressive. I would never take a course with this professor if you value your mental health.

The way her class is structured does not foster the best learning experience. Evident she is here solely in the interest of doing research rather than anything else.

I have mixed feelings about Dr. Tyrell. On one hand, I would agree that this is a topic she is very passionate and knowledgeable on. That being said, she very obviously has her favorites, which is highly dependent upon how often they participate in class. I would probably also not recommend for people that get nervous public speaking because the final presentation has very little leeway for feeling flustered. The group discussions often get repetitive and tend to cover topics that are complicated, which are often put on the students to explain during their presentation, rather than on her. I really wanted to like this class, because the topics are interesting and worth learning about, but I felt that the layout didn't foster the best learning experience for me.

Tyrell seems really passionate about what she does, but heavily relies on students to do half of the teaching themselves (i.e, every Thursday we had to lead discussions for a full 75 minutes, which became pretty boring since the discussion topics were all very similar). Additionally, there were very few papers we read about AAPIDA populations. the focus on AAPIDA cultural processes appeared less important, based on the lack of articles that we had to read.
