Orrin Wang ENGL420 Expecting an A Anonymous 04/07/2026	Genuinely one of the worst classes I have ever taken. It is such a shame considering how interesting the content was, too. However, all he does is lecture, which would be fine except for the fact that it is INCREDIBLY boring and ALWAYS about himself and his life (and his political views). He never gave a rubric for anything, but then always found something to be wrong with our writing. I got a B in the class, which wasn't bad, but I genuinely have no idea why I didn't get an A.
Orrin Wang ENGL319C Expecting an A- Anonymous 03/31/2026	I took this course in the Fall 2025 semester. Professor Wang is very passionate about what he teaches, and it shows in his lectures. He doesn't provide slides, but he does make it very clear which points are important, making it easy to take notes. I did find the volume of reading overwhelming at times, but that's probably just a me problem as I was an engineering student with ADHD lmao. As for assignments, do be aware that there are only three prior to the final exam: a paper, a journal thing, and the third assignment lets you choose between doing one of the two a second time. That being said, Wang was very lenient with deadlines, and he let me submit all three on the last day of the semester with no penalty. If you're passionate about monsters and gothic fiction, this class is definitely worth taking.
Orrin Wang ENGL319C Expecting an A Anonymous 01/11/2026	As some already said, you’re not going to get PowerPoint slides, and he only really writes key things or terms on the board, so the bulk of your notes will need to be from what you think is important during the lecture. He makes it pretty obvious, to me, the point he is making, so if you’ve done the reading and are paying attention to the lecture, you will do fine. The final exam was a little difficult, but only because the second portion was a short (like 5 standard paragraph) in-class essay and I just always feel I do badly on timed writing assignments, even if I don’t. The other 3 writing assignments throughout the course weren’t very difficult. Overall, the course was really interesting, and I really didn’t mind his teaching style.
Orrin Wang ENGL319C Expecting a B Anonymous 12/21/2025	The most rambling, convoluted lectures I’ve ever had the misfortune to sit through. Meandering, irrelevant, and devoid of anything even remotely interesting. The final exam composed of questions just regurgitating whatever he managed to spew out during the lectures. Do not take.
Orrin Wang ENGL312 Expecting a C+ Anonymous 03/27/2024	Told me that he didn't like the way I write and that I wouldn't get higher than a C in his class. Would advise you to take this course with another professor!
Orrin Wang ENGL319C Expecting a B- Anonymous 05/10/2023	This guy lectures for the entire duration of class with no slides and is super monotone, then expects you to remember everything he said including his thoughts on it and regurgitate those thoughts in exams. He is also a rude personality and acts petty when he dislikes a student. Don’t take him, not worth your time!
Orrin Wang ENGL312 Anonymous 05/06/2023	I have to agree 100% with the review below. Orrin’s class is very politicized when the content of the course definitely does not call for it. His grading is extremely subjective - I read on one of his reviews that he picks favorites, which is all too clear from my experience in his class. I have all A’s in my other courses, but in Wang’s, I have a low B even though I have done all the work to the best of my ability and have been very attentive in class. Randomly brings up race, when it has no relation at all to the topic (honestly borderline racist!) Do not take him! As the person below said, the course may sound fun, but Wang himself is anything but.
Orrin Wang ENGL312 Expecting a B Anonymous 04/10/2023	During mid semester, the highest grade in the entire class was around an A-. Preaches his opinions during class and tests you on them. Says he welcomes discussion, but class time is really just him preaching his opinions. He grades extremely subjectively and is overall pretty difficult. I get that the class he teaches may sound interesting, but it's really not worth it.
Orrin Wang ENGL420 Expecting an A- Anonymous 04/24/2012	He's a great professor. The class is difficult, especially for someone like me who doesn't respond well to poetry, but I found myself more simply out of my comfort zone rather than really disliking the class. It's an upper-level class and he treats it as such while managing to still be really funny. Two papers, one research paper, and a final. The only bad thing, as with all Lit classes, is that the lectures tend to get really convoluted. If you're into English though, it shouldn't be anything out of the ordinary. Would definitely recommend him.
