Loved this course - basically just watch one movie every week and discuss it in class. Dr. Weiss is very understanding and accommodating if you just reach out. Just show up to class and talk sometimes and you will be fine. The course work included three papers and discussion board posts that took me like 5 minutes. Recommend this to anyone who loves movies or looking for a fun/easy gen ed.

10/10 really amazing class w/ Dr. Weiss if you love movies. Imo it’s still pretty easy even if you don’t watch the assigned movies but I would recommend that you still do :) Class structure: Every Friday he assigns a movie. You watch it over the weekend. The following Monday one group has to write a 400 word discussion board post responding to one of the prompts that he gives related to the movie. As long as you write something decent you get good points. The groups rotate every week so you end up doing the 400 word discussion board post 2-3x a semester. Everyone else not in the group is required to reply to someone’s discussion board post with a 200-300 word response every week. If you forget to reply to someone’s DB post once in a while it’s okay he doesn’t take off points I think. Don’t miss the 400 word post when it’s your week though. I think there were like two essays in the semester and a final paper. The essays increased in length each time. They were a bit difficult for me honestly. It’s not like a standard English paper each time. Make sure you read the syllabus for instructions. For example, our first paper was a Film Review essay, so you’re supposed to structure it like a Film Review. I recommend looking at the essays he provides in class or looking online for how to do these kinds of papers. The paper will be on one movie that you’ve watched in class that you select. Participation is a large chunk of your grade (~20%) and I’m pretty sure he actually takes attendance so make sure you can attend most classes. It's also only a 25-person class so it's easy to tell when someone isn't here. In class we usually discuss the movie we were assigned over the weekend. We might watch clips of it in class. Please actually watch the movie!! Or at least a good part of it. Discussions in class are so fun and it’s sad when no one says anything. In class we usually discuss the details of certain scenes, so I don’t think it’s helpful to just read a plot summary online. Some days Dr. Weiss would ask us to read an essay on the assigned movie before the following class so we could discuss the essay. As a person Dr. Weiss is a really nice guy. If you miss a class he’s usually very forgiving, and you can miss a few discussion board replies as well. You can tell he’s really passionate about the movies we watch in class, but also about media and cinema in general. You can talk to him about literally any piece of media; he probably has watched it or at least knows about it. He's also really funny. The one thing I regret is not going to office hours for help on the essays. He discusses the requirements of the essay in class but not really how to write the essay, which makes sense bc it’s not a writing class, but it does mean that you have to do a lot of your own research and ask for your help on your own in writing the essay. I’ve heard he’s very helpful if you ask though! He does have one peer review session before each paper is due as well. Good luck!

Dr. Weiss is a humorous professor who always makes the class entertaining. He is always willing to help you and answer your questions. He constantly gives reminders of current and upcoming tasks and sends emails on updates. He is also flexible when it comes to submitting final papers, and reads the papers very thoroughly. The general class atmosphere feels like a discussion with him and your classmates concerning the week’s topic. Something to note is that there are five major projects, with the addition of attendance/participation, blog posts, drafts/peer reviews, and mini-projects.

Dr. Weiss cares about his students so much, you just have to communicate with him. He is very approachable and if you have anything going on, just talk to him about it and I guarantee it that you will come to a solution. Sometimes his feedback can be a little slow, but it is quality feedback and he does three read throughs of each paper before giving a grade back, so he is very thorough. I honestly didn't try too very hard on my papers, and still ended u with an A-, but if you really want to do well just talk to him about how to improve. Dr. Weiss is also very humorous and will crack jokes for most of the class, especially if you have a super chatty class like I did.

Dr. Weiss is a great professor - he really seems to care about his students, is honest with us, and gives feedback in time for us to use it on the next assignment. He's very well-learned and has a lot of good things to say. I put a lot of work into this class (maybe too much), but that's what you'll have to do to get an A. DO NOT procrastinate on the assignments, especially the position paper... you will regret it. He's super flexible and understanding as long as you communicate with him! He's also just really funny. Overall, I would definitely recommend taking this class with him.

Dr. Weiss is a phenomenal professor and great person, he is pretty laid back but don't take advantage of that. you have to put the work in and communicate to make the class work, honestly the word load is fair as long as you spread it out (like any other class :P). effort makes everything and if you ask him questions it WILL benefit you + going to class consistently and reading. he is very nice and will help you every inch of the way if you need it!!

Really good guy he does care and gives good feedback but he is not for the weak. You really have to work for a good grade in his class. He will give extensions if you ask and he is very flexible. Only take him if you are willing to put in the work and a lot of it. It is really hard to impress him, and he doesn't give out many A's.

Dr.Weiss is a great guy and he's very passionate about his topics. He is pretty laid back but you shouldn't really take advantage of that because i'm pretty sure he secretly keeps track of people who are late to class or like doesn't show up. He is very welcoming but also manages to give you harsh but good criticism. He is not for the weak!!!! BUT, he is very accommodating and will give you extensions if you just ASK. I got a B+ in every single assignment but class participation and the last project got me an overall A- in that class (WHICH I'M HAPPY WITH).

Dr. Weiss is a very passionate and engaging professor. He genuinely cares about his students improving on their writing skills and how engaged we are with our writing topics. That being said this is a very demanding class and he has high expectations for all of his assignments. He is a pretty tough grader so an A in this class won't be easy but he is willing to help you work for it. The comments he leaves on papers are hit or miss in terms of helping you improve and some of his comments are copy and pastes from other assignments. Overall this is a good class to improve your writing but it will be demanding in terms of work and grading.

Dr. Weiss is a good professor. He is open and honest with his students, which makes for a good classroom environment. He really does care about his students!! The coursework can be overwhelming, but make sure to balance your time wisely. He is always willing to help improve writing and leaves good feedback, but his class is not an "easy A".

Dr. Weiss is an excellent person- he is very engaging and fun to talk to! I enjoyed all my conversations with him and it was obvious that he cared about his students. However, I felt like he graded on the harsher side (I would say I am a mediocre writer however I write well enough to scrape by with an A in a lot of other courses). If you want an A you either need to be an above average writer or willing to spend A LOT of time towards the course. I had an extremely heavy course load this semester and could not spend hours upon hours pouring through and improving my papers. He is always willing to help and improve writing, however this class is not an "easy" A. If you are looking to improve writing definitely take this professor! However, if you do not have a lot of time to spare or are not passionate about writing I do not recommend taking this professor.

Dr. Weiss is a fantastic professor! Not only does he readily engage with his students, but it is clear that he cared about all of us. He is also funny and his class is fun to attend. I didn't think I needed English 101 but he taught me that I can't just phone in my essays anymore. I cannot recommend him enough.
