Dr. Weiss is such a great professor! She is really passionate about the subject and knows it really well. You can tell she cares about the students and wants them to do well. Her exams are super fair, and even if you don't do well on them, she gives plenty of opportunities to earn more points, like through weekly review quizzes, graded modules, and participation questions. In addition, the slide shows and recordings are always posted and very useful to go over to study. She provides key questions for each topic that help you study. Also, she provides a review paper and slides for each exam that are very helpful. She is very receptive to students asking questions in and after class. If you don't understand a concept you can just ask her. The best thing is that she makes jokes and tries to make us laugh. This shows how much she cares about us! I 100% recommend you take her! |

The beginning and first exam was rough.. I had no background on biology and I feel like the first unit/content on the first exam was not fair for people who haven't learned biology yet. It was just really hard for me personally but every exam after that seemed to be really fair based on the material taught. She is a very nice professor and keeps her lectures engaging and is great at answering students questions. |

She cares about her job and is such a good teacher. She doesn't drop any test grades, but if you study, there shouldn't be a problem! Would definitely take a class with her again! |

I chose to write this review BEFORE the final exam to avoid an bias. Anyways, do not fall for the propaganda, she is an AMAZING professor. She cares about her students more than she cares about biology and she cares a lot about biology!!! In order to succeed in this course, just go to class, pay attention, complete the quizzes and graded modules, study the material and don't be afraid to ask questions! FYI: She does NOT drop any exams but that won't be an issue because she teaches extremely well which makes the exams fair and manageable. 10/10 recommend. |

As someone more into the ecology & evolution side of biology, I wasn't expecting to enjoy this class as much as I did with Dr. Weiss as a professor. Her slides are thorough, organized, easy to read, and she spends a good amount of time explaining the concepts verbally--often in several ways--to ensure understanding. Her lecture style is engaging, clear, and not super fast-paced (great for me), yet we still get through all of the content each day. She does have 8 lecture quizzes, but they are often online, always open-note, and she drops the lowest 2; it's basically another study tool and grade booster. Her exams are harder than Keller's from what I've heard BUT they are very fair. Take the notes, review lecture quizzes, attend the exam reviews, make fairly detailed flashcards (I found this very helpful) and you will be fine. You don't need to put in a lot of hours per week into this class to get an A-/B+. I agree with the other reviews that Keller's lecture style was harder to follow when he stepped in for her absence, and looking back at his slides later did nothing for me either. Something to consider. Dr. Weiss is a fun, lighthearted, engaging, and passionate professor. The best STEM professor I've had thus far. It's uncommon for a new professor to be this great, and I suspect that she'll only get better. I took 18 credits this semester and her class was my escape from everything else! |

Her exams are very relevant to what she teaches, and all of the homework’s, quizzes, and participation add up to make a pretty fair “grade boost.” Very down to earth and funny. She can be a little blunt, which could sometimes be perceived as condescending. But I’m not exactly neurotypical, so I doubt the vast majority of people would perceive it as such. I’m on the brink of an A to A-, but I probably could have been basically guaranteed an A if I didn’t overthink on the exam. What I mean by this is that the questions are not made to trick you AT ALL and you should always take them to mean the simplest thing you think it means. Overall, she is fair and you can tell she puts time and effort into her lectures. Definitely a safe choice if you need BSCI170. |

Genuinely one of, if not the best professors I have had at UMD. She is a passionate teacher who connects her experience, course material, and real world examples together in a way that no other teacher does. Her work load was very manageable, with about 1 assignment a week and mandatory attendance at lecture (you won't want to miss them they are very fun). Her exams were incredibly fair and there were plenty of opportunities for extra credit. 100% recommend. |

She makes the class pretty easy. Fair exams, lots of information on each slide, and its a chill lecture (and sometimes kinda funny). Only problem is that she just reads off of slides, and sometimes lectures are very disorganized. If you want a good grade in the class then take her, but I feel like Im not learning as in depth information as I should for my future bsci classes. |

This class is super easy if you review the slides because ethe exams are based on the slides. The workload is basically nothing just some weekly review quiz and an occasional graded module. Honestly such a good class and very interesting. Dr. Weiss is a great professor and funny too. Just take her class. The exam format is consistent so you know what to be prepared for. |

Professor Weiss feels like the professor who helps a recent high school graduate transition to college. She acknowledges that not everyone is a biology scientist and explains concepts several times for people to understand. She is also funny, gives a "sassy aunt vibe", which helps keep the class engaging. I have sat through class with other BSCI professors, and she was definitely the most entertaining one. The exams also seemed to correspond with the lecture concepts for the most part. Studying will get you a 90% guarantee. Nice bonus, she records all of her lectures. I wouldn't skip, though, considering there are participation points. |

I love Dr. Weiss as a person but as a teacher as well. Her slides are very helpful and her exams reflect exactly what was talked about during lecture. All lectures are recorded and so were the ta review sessions. doesn't give that many assignments but the ones given are pretty easy. there are participation questions each lecture. Dr Weiss is EXTREMELY accommodating, as she missed a few weeks due to health issues and because of this removed photosynthesis from the exam and final, and she has a great energy and enthusiasm every class. |

Best professor I have had at UMD hands down!! Really cares about the success for her students and showcases that every single day. I also love that Dr. Weiss is very intentional with getting to know students names which feels so important when you're in a large lecture. She also records her lectures which is so helpful for exam review! The exams are very fair with information coming straight from the slides. I also love that she reiterates important concepts over, and over, and over again to make them stick in your head. Additionally, if you are pre-health she consistently makes applications to the real world that may be interesting to you. She truly is incredible, and I would highly recommend. |

I absolutely hated biology before taking this class, the way she teaches the material is so interesting and her exams are EXTREMELY fair if you study what she asks. She provides objectives for every lecture (also records) which compile and make a perfect study guide. Throughout her lectures she will also emphasize material verbally or it will be boxed/bolded on a slide which indicates she is likely going to test the material on the exam. She cares a lot about her students and her job, she puts genuine effort into prioritizing the needs of the class ie. slowing down on content if needed, answering questions. There are weekly quizzes to check your knowledge and she drops the two lowest of the scores, she also does free participation points every class which is nice. The only reason I can think of why someone may not like her is because she had to leave the class for 2-3 weeks due to health related concerns and people were angry that she had another lecturer (keller) step in as well as lectured virtually. HOWEVER, because the class was so thrown off by Keller's lecture style (which in my opinion, hes very nice and sweet and his lectures tell a story, but his slides are not details whatsoever and I felt like falling asleep) she ended up completely removing any material he taught in the midterm AND the exam, all this to say shes EXTREMELY accomodating. Additonally, her slides/lectures are detailed enough that you don't need to do any of the additional readings on SimBio if you so please. DEFINITELY take her if you can, shes funny, blunt, teaches everyone well, and is super willing to accomodate any needs/questions/concerns. The class is structured so well for such a new professor. |

Legit FREAKING AMAZING!!!! She is the best professor I have ever had at UMD. Her class is very easy to follow, and her slides have EVERYTHING you need to know for the tests. She is pretty young, so shes pretty funny and relatable. If you try, and study in this class, you will do well. Also she really does try to learn a ton of peoples names in a huge lecture hall, which is rare. Please take her. I am so glad I did. (she had no reviews when I signed up haha) |

I LOVE Proff. Weiss. She is an absolutely amazing teacher and is very funny. I almost didn't take her because she didn't have any reviews, but thank gosh I did. The tests are very straightforward and only include material from the posted PowerPoint slides! While I would 100% go to class, if you happen to miss a day, reading just the slides will have you do well in the class. This semester, Prof. Keller came in and taught a few classes, and I can say with 100% certainty that Weiss is a better teacher. She is easy to follow and truly makes sure you understand the concepts. She also had the TA's host review sessions, which were very helpful for the tests. So if you want a fun, relatable, and easy to follow professor, take this class. |

Dr. Weiss is amazing! It was her first time teaching BSCI170 but her teaching style and diagrams are incredibly informative for the exams. Speaking of, her exams are extremely straight forward with multiple choice, fill in the blank, and some short answer questions (usually like 1 or 2). Her class structure goes as follows: - Participation questions, QR codes on the slides (5% of grade, still have to show up in person) - 8 weekly online quizzes (2 lowest scores dropped, 18.5% of grade) - 4 Graded SimUText Modules ($50 online textbook, 6% of grade) - 3 Midterm exams (46% of grade) - 1 Final (23% of grade) Show up to class, study the material, and you should be fine. She puts no trick questions and the exams are very straight forward. If you miss class, you can't do the participation question of the day but she posts the slides and records the lectures. |

She is an incredible teacher for BSCI170. I had her my very first semester of college and everything about her course structure was extremely helpful when adjusting to the workload. Her exams are extremely fair and she provides objectives for every lecture that serves as the perfect study guide. On top of exams, she provides an inordinate amount of ways to earn other points in the class such as quizzes, easy graded SimBios, and participation questions-- she also posts lectures in case you miss one. I used to hate bio from high school, but after taking it with her I have a new appreciation and interest in the content she taught. Side note-- she also drops two quizzes and there are readings included for every lecture topic but you don't need to do them at all because her lecture covers all the material and she doesn't pull any trick questions on exams etc. Besides the course itself, she's funny, sharp, and witty and the way she teaches the lectures are interesting and engaging. She cares a lot about her students and providing support when and where its needed, definitely take her over other BSCI170 profs! We had Keller step in to teach two lectures and even though he seems like a great teacher, his lecture style was very boring and his slideshows were not detailed with notes whatsoever. |

Dr. Weiss is amazing! This was her first time teaching BSCI170, but her teaching style and class structure are incredibly succinct and helpful toward the exams. At the start of every lecture there are objectives which you should write down, cause they will most likely be on the exam. The current structure of the class is like this: - Participation QR code questions every class (4.5% of grade) - Weekly online quizzes (8 total, 2 worst scores dropped; 18.5% of grade) - 4 Graded SimUText Modules (SimUText, the online textbook, costs about $50, it's the only textbook you need to buy, 6% of grade) - 3 Midterms worth ~46% of your grade - 1 Final worth ~23% of your grade Show up to class, pay attention, and study the material. I ended up teaching other people with other professors because Dr. Weiss' method and diagrams were so useful. She also never puts trick questions on exams and they are pretty straight forward with multiple choice, fill in the blanks, and true or false questions. |

Genuinely an amazing professor, I highly recommend her. Her grades are extremely fair, her exams directly correlate to what we learn in class, and she drops the two lowest quiz grades (which are open note). She is so good at teaching and I've never understood biology better than I have when taking this course. Attendance is a grade but I'd recommend going in person anyways to get a better grasp of the material. She genuinely wants you to succeed and cares about each and every student. |

She is new-- but absolutely AMAZING. I have recommended her to all my friends and am looking to take her BSCI213 course this next semester. She is super passionate, straight forward, easy to understand, really puts together everything into the slide shows. She is always open to questions and you have all the resources to do well in her class. All lectures are hosted online and in person and the slide decks are posted too. Two of your quizzes are dropped at the end of the semester. She also makes funny jokes. Take her class if you can!! |

DO NOT TAKE HER FOR BSCI170. She is very nice but does not know how to teach this class. Her lectures are very disorganized and her slides have so much information to where its impossible to take notes on. This would be fine if it was the same stuff that is on the exam but its not even close. She does not prepare you well for your exams at all and ive heard every other professor for this class is much more straightforward. There is also no DSS which all other sections have. |
