Awesome professor. Great curve on the class and fair homeworks |

I love Dr. Wellershoff. He teaches in a very clear and straightforward way, and his homeworks and exams mirror EXACTLY what you learn in lecture. One of the fairest professors I've ever had. He's also pretty charismatic, with a sort of goofy European dude vibe, and lectures were decently enjoyable. He's clearly very passionate about the subject, frequently claiming that he loves doing math, and it shows. I would take him again for other classes. His grading scheme is a bit heavy on exams, but the exams are very fair. Any errors or discrepancies in exams and homework were usually dropped entirely, which was really great. The workload wasn't bad. Discussion is not necessary, it's just guidance on the weekly homeworks. I will say that I massively benefitted from taking CMSC250 BEFORE taking this class, because there is a lot of stuff that builds upon some assumed knowledge from that, like understanding of sets and rigorous proofs (which admittedly was probably unfair to those not majoring in CS), but if you have taken 250, this class will be a breeze with Wellershoff. |

I thought he was a good professor for STAT401. The class was weighted super heavily on exams (84% of our grade was determined by 3 exams). However, I thought the exams were fair for the most part, and the final wasn't cumulative which was nice. There was a super low workload in terms of homework and other stuff. There is a weekly homework with two problems on it. There was also a pretty easy coding assignment at the end of the semester. I thought the lectures were pretty informative and well-structured. Overall, I would definitely recommend taking Dr. Wellershoff for STAT 401. |

Very kind teacher and really understanding IMO. Our class was originally 5% project, 11% homework, 28% on exams (3) but format was changed after exam 1 scores were low – ended up doing 20%, 28%, 36% for exam scores as a "curve". Exams were similar to practice exams and problems done in class, and fair. Also, instead of the 90/93/97 A-/A/A+ grading scheme Wellershoff used a 85/90/95 A-/A/A+ grading scheme. |

Pros: Good cutoffs, (a 55% is like a C). Cons: Mediocre lecturer, confusing exams, goes over easy examples in class and puts harder ones from the textbook for homework. His exam questions are weirded so bizarrely he has to clarify what he means for half of them during the exam. His practice exams also do not correlate with the actual ones, so you better read up on the theory from the textbook. In order to make up for this stuff, the grading is very relaxed. You will get points just for writing down simple definitions. But if you don't understand what the question is asking, you'll probably get a 0 on it. The exam averages were high but I have no idea how, since most people I spoke to didn't have great understanding of the material. I'm assuming people figured out how to game his grading system after the first exam and scrounged points. This class is supposed to be one of the easier ones, but Wellershof makes it more difficult than it needs to be. Do yourself a favor and just take Gunatielleka to avoid any headaches. |

This class is really harder than it needs to be with him. He will go over easy examples in class and put more difficult questions on the homeworks. His exam questions are very bizarre and require weird applications of problems. Overall you can probably do fine if you're good at self teaching and grasping random concepts, but there's probably better professors you can take this class with. I found this class weirdly more challenging at points than Math240, Math141, and Math140, which doesn't make sense since this class is supposed to be much easier on average. If you take the class with him, I would recommend skipping lecture and just reading the textbook. Make sure to pray he words his questions correctly the night before every exam or else you'll spend 10 minutes trying to figure out what he's asking you and then writing down some formula followed by 3 lines of random yapping to get a 12/20 on the problem. |

The exams are graded out of 36 points and are worth 28% each. There are 3 multiple choice questions that can be very tricky and can make or break your grade. The only good thing is that none of the exams are cumulative not even the final. The homework and the exam review are way easier than the actual exam. It just seems to me that he doesn't realize that most of us are not math majors as his exams are very theory based. |

Worst grading scheme of any class i’ve taken, you can get all the right answers and still get a B because you didn’t write it the specific way he wants you to. The expectations for the class are really ambiguous because you usually get a 100 on all the homeworks but exams are graded harshly. The content of the class is not too hard but you end up spending more time on figuring out the little details of the exact procedures he wants you to do than actually learning stats. |

The material is so easy that he looks for things to deduct points on for exams, and he doesn't grade homeworks the same way as exams even though it can literally be the same problems. You can't do problems your own way, you have to guess his contrived steps that are each worth 0.5 pts for each question. Getting all the right answers doesn't mean you get anywhere close to a good grade. I literally spend more time doing his steps than actually solving the questions. |

Nice Guy and great teacher. Clearly provides all the information you need from his lectures, and willing to provide his notes as well. The rhythm of the lectures was still a bit rough, but that's probably just because he is still a pretty new professor to UMD. Homeworks were helpful and exams were very fair. He is a great professor, highly recommend. |

Really good professor and very nice guy who just wants you to do well. His lectures and notes are very clear, and the exams are pretty much straightforward. If you go to lectures or even read the notes/textbook, you should be more than ready for them. Would highly recommend taking him for Stat401. |

I feel like his lectures were pretty clear and he is very willing to hear out student concerns. Very approachable guy who wants to see you do well. It was his first time teaching in the US, so he wasn't always sure about the pacing of the class and ended up skipping some material towards the end. Class was not too hard even though I'm not great at linear algebra. |

Very easy professor. I never showed up to classes but just read his lecture notes the day before the exams and got great scores. Ended up curving the final exam 28 points (so the 57% average is now a 80% average), but this shocks me as the questions were not hard. If you can read the lecture notes and understand theorems / examples you will be fine. Did not learn much, though. |

I had Matthias for the Fall 2022 Semester. He was a nice and well intentioned person. Although this was his first semester teaching at UMD, he really put in the effort to make the course enjoyable. He had prepared excellent class notes for the materials covered in class, which I really appreciate since it helped me learn better. I do, however, wish we could cover more applications of linear algebra instead of focusing too much on the theory. I'd 10/10 recommend him as a professor for MATH401. |

solid professor. it was his first time teaching the class and I thought he was pretty good. he has very clear guidelines, gives ample time for homeworks (which aren't too difficult), and the exams are pretty straight forward and predictable. also doesn't require attendance and records all lectures and posts notes |

Super nice guy. He was very open to feedback about lectures and other class matters. He gave a reasonable amount of work and his exams weren’t terribly difficult although the last exam was heavy on theory. He also does his best to make lectures interesting. On a more informal note, his hair is amazing and he says the words “pivot” and “variable” funny since he isn’t American. My only complaint is that I found his lecture style not very effective, but that may just be me. |
