Dr. Wu is very sweet and a good lecturer. Her lectures weren't mandatory so I stopped showing up after a while, and so did the majority of the class. The lecture content was easy to understand and could be picked up simply by reading the lecture slides. The in-class assignments were easy, sometimes painfully easy. The issue I had with INST462 was the overall structure of the course and her TA, Jay. Major assignments were due Fridays at 11:59. Students were encouraged not to work on their assignments until discussion so they could get feedback (which was usually unhelpful). Discussion was on Fridays, leaving you with just Friday night to implement the feedback. I usually just ended up doing the assignments before discussion anyway and not implementing the feedback because I have other things I'd like to be doing on Friday nights. The grading was also slow and extremely inconsistent. One assignment you'll get a 100, and the next you'll fail it because a different TA graded it and had different standards. I honestly don't feel like I learned much at all from this class. I was hoping it would be more technical, but it was mostly centered on design theory. If you're hoping to take a more technical class like I was, don't take Dr. Wu. You will be disappointed. However if you're interested in design theory and improving your visualizations by hand, then this is your class and Dr. Wu is a great option. |

Dr. Wu is not a very engaging professor, but she is very kind. I appreciate the time that she clearly puts into the course, but I do think she could have taught the class better. Lectures were very boring because the information taught was fairly elementary, and there were no technical skills that you could build in lecture. We were taught how to use Tableau (very briefly) , and that was it. For a data visualization course, I would expect to learn a multitude of data visualization tools I can use in the work force. I would love to see Power BI, Databricks, or even Excel used in this course in the future. Most of the lecture material could be cut in half to allocate time to learn other data viz tools, and you would probably learn more than I did this past semester. Y You can undoubtedly earn an A++ without attending a single class, because the content does not challenge you in any capacity. I expected more from a 400 level course. |
