I really liked Dr. Wu's class. Firstly, she absolutely cares about her students and their overall wellbeing. When students, including myself, had conflicts or questions, she would always be ready to assist. Overall, I think that the content itself was at times difficult, but I think that the exams and material was always very fair and fitted nicely as the course you could take if you also enjoyed BSCI 222. Additionally, even if BSCI 222 (intro genetics) was not the strongest for some, I still think that people can do really well and learn a lot from the course as the material is very engaging, and I think it helps that she uses a lot of real-world examples in relation to the various lecture topics. My suggestion for studying is attending her lectures in person (she does have a zoom link you can use instead but I think in-person is more engaging) and staying on top of the material by using flash cards and studying the diagrams/pictures she has posted on the lecture slides every week. I personally think this was one of my favorite classes at UMD!

I really liked BSCI410 with Dr. Wu! She cares a lot about her students (is available outside of class, is flexible with deadlines, helped me with professional development) and is passionate about the material! The assignments were more applications than about memorization- exams were open note (and only the best 2/3 count, including the final, which is treated like exam 3), but you want understand the material well for them (especially definitions of vocabulary terms and what different lab techniques are used for). Extra credit was generous, especially for the final group project- but an A still requires a good amount of work!

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you are absolutely in love with genetics and have a deep genuine interest in it. OTHERWISE you will be absolutely dedicating your semester to this class because it is so hard. This is coming from someone who got As in the hardest med pre req classes and knows how to put in work, and let me tell you, I had to absolutely grind for this class like it was orgo 1. The content is hard which is expected, but the teaching..... THE TEACHING is POOR. Class consisted of endless pictures thrown up on the screen and a lot of "I thinks" from the professor when she quickly explained stuff. Dont ask questions because she doesnt know half of the answers. THEN the homeworks are graded incredibly harshly, I literally got an 8/20 on one and was shook... never have I ever gotten below a 50 on ANY homework, let alone a BIOLOGY homework. Then, the exams were insanely difficult and were totally application based... It's like you didnt study because NOTHING YOU STUDY IS ON THE EXAM bc everything is so farfetched. Averages were in the 60s which is absurd for a bio class. It really felt like the professor was playing mind games with us because she made it seem like it was totally possible to do well on exams, when everyone I know was struggling to improve. In the end, she made the final aka third exam FINALLY FAIR and gave a good amount of extra credit to save everyone's grades, but the extreme stress and headaches were not consoled. Dr. Wu is a very nice person and has a good heart, but lecturing is a different story. This is NOT AN EASY A UPPER LEVEL do not be fooled by the grade data like I was!

Dr. Wu is an incredibly kind professor and will really walk with you whether you are struggling or succeeding. She is very helpful during office hours and makes it a point to make sure she gives attention to everyone, which is very refreshing. Do not expect this class to be easy, be prepared to work hard and really study the material well, but in doing so, you will learn a lot! This class was very interesting and had a lot of valuable information to be learned. Overall this class was challenging, but rewarding and I'm so glad to have met Dr. Wu and to have a professor who actually cares about her students for once:)

Only a few reviews have mentioned Dr. Wu's poor teaching. It was pretty frustrating to learn molecular genetics from her teaching style, because it felt like she just read off of slides without actually connecting pieces of information together. I wish she came a bit more prepared to class so there'd be less buffering time and less "um"'s during lectures. Exam 2 felt like a huge information dump, so be prepared to study in advance for that exam. She doesn't provide any old practice exams, nor practice questions for us. The main things I relied off of were GSS worksheets, and homeworks. The GSS wksts moreso tested general concepts talked about in class, going as far as "define ____" which wasn't very helpful. I'm not sure how to feel about the class overall; I left with a good grade but feel like I've learned nothing.

I loved Dr. Wu and BSCI410! Her class is super engaging, and she is so kind and wants to see her students succeed. I went to her office hours almost every week, and it was so nice getting to know her on a more personal level. She is always very willing to help and gives great advice to students looking for feedback. I did well on her first and second exams, so I did not have to take the final exam. I did especially well on the second exam, and my main technique during studying which helped me succeed was printing out the slides and then rewatching the recordings and writing notes/summaries on top of the slides and diagrams/photos. I found this to be very effective during studying, as her slides have important diagrams and information, but she further explains them during lecture, so it was efficient to write on top of the printed notes! I then took those with me to the open-note exams, but I made sure to go through them multiple times before hand, so that I know where to find the content in my notes. The TAs also have office hours and study sessions, and they supply weekly practice problems similar to exam format. Dr. Wu also supplies extra credit opportunities(exam wrapper after exam 1 and presentations at the end of the semester). There are so many resources to succeed in this class, and these opportunities helped me get an A+ in BSCI410! Overall, it was a great class with an incredibly kind and wonderful professor, and I would really recommend Dr. Wu and BSCI410 to anyone looking for a class to take.

Dr. Wu is nice which is why so many people like her, not because she is a good professor. Many of the good reviews are from people that thought she was nice. She is slightly lenient with grading, but her grading is very confusing. Her lectures are extremely rushed and unconfident to the point where sometimes she won't even know her own lecture slides. There are times where she will shut down student questions in favor of completing the slideshow in time. She will also rush clickers in favor of time which seems to be more important than actually understanding the lecture. It just felt like very little was learned from her class. The tests are also extremely difficult and there aren't many practice problems to help and the open notes aspect doesn't really help. Her TAs were extremely hard with grading and it was almost impossible to get regrades through them. It just seemed like an extremely unorganized class.

Dr. Wu is really nice and wants her students to succeed. I wasn't really accustomed to her teaching style, I feel like she doesn't explain concepts clearly in lecture, but the good part is all her exams are open note, including the final and you get to drop your lowest exam. To do well in this class I recommend focusing on making a good cheat sheet for the exams, and especially focus on experimental techniques as those are often the free response questions. She does give extra credit and sort of free points from clickers and short written assignments as well so in the end it does boost your grade.

To be honest, I'm quite confused by all the high ratings. I agree that Dr. Wu is super nice, but she is not a great lecturer. Class was always very disorganized (she often seemed like it was her first time looking at the slides) and would result in tangents. Dr. Wu would also push to finish her lecture slides in one class, even if there are over 50 slides, so she would end up rushing through slides (she once got through roughly 10 slides in 2-3 minutes). Her exams also weren't based on class material, so the exams being open-note didn't help that much. She briefly explained the concepts (very surface-level understanding), but the exams would have some random, niche question on it that was completely out of nowhere. The homeworks also did not relate to class material and would be based on some random research paper that was not provided to us. Her questions on the hw were very vague but then she'd take points off when you didn't write the answer she had down. Dr. Wu also tries her best to sympathize with the students but would take away point opportunities (exam-wrappers) on a whim because she didn't think some people were doing them correctly. I think this class would have been fine, but Dr. Wu made the class much more tedious and hard.

I loved Dr. Wu! She's amazingly kind and wants you to succeed in her class! The material in BSCI410 can be very dense at times, but her slides helped a lot (especially if they are downloaded since there are notes at the bottom of the slides). The class consisted of three open-note exams, with the lowest one being dropped. There were also some homework assignments, short quizzes, and one-minute essays here and there, but they were not too difficult to complete. If you need help, she is VERY responsive on Piazza and through email. At the end of the semester, she offered an extra credit opportunity. If you need to take BSCI410, I encourage you to take it with Dr. Wu!

I don't understand why Dr. Wu has such high reviews. Everyone loves her for her personality (including me), but I've found her to be a terrible lecturer. She's often frazzled, and comes into class just to read through the slides quickly to info dump on us. I also find it difficult to follow along with her teachings because she often explains things in a convoluted way when there's an easier way to get to the point, and she tends to include an "um" or "you know" in every sentence which is extremely distracting. Additionally, I wish she was a bit more rigid with her rules because it sometimes feels like students overstep her and she gets extremely upset/slightly passive aggressive about it. It's difficult to respect her classroom structure (in terms of how poorly exams are written, how strictly homework is graded, how randomly extra credit is rewarded) because she doesn't set the standard. For example, part of her extra credit is to ask questions for presenters in class, but she determines whether the question is "good" or not, which makes it seem purely subjective. There's also no practice exams or extra practice problems for you to review prior to the exam. The only things that I've studied are the slides and the 2 homeworks we get assigned before the exam (each hw has about 2 problems max). Overall, pretty frustrating.. Dr. Wu is the sweetest soul but I don't believe that should make up for her work as a professor.

Dr. Wu is a caring and forgiving professor. She is very responsive, willing to help as much as she can during office hours, provides one-on-one meetings, answers questions on Piazza, and tries her best to have her students succeed in her class. BSCI410 is definitely a difficult class: there is a lot of content to cover for exams, the exams themselves are high-level, and lectures can be confusing. She emphasizes expanding content from previous topics to the next exam. Finally, she offers a lot of extra credit in exams and assignments, which was very helpful. Overall, Dr. Wu cares for the students and will ensure everyone can succeed in BSCI410.

She is literally the rudest and most condescending professor on this campus. I have a feeling that she probably controls these reviews considering that a large majority of her students hates her guts but somehow all the negative reviews never makes it on. Terrible lecturer, doesn't know what shes talking about and does not go into details. Office hours are useless as she always gives hesitant or surface level answers. Let's her teaching assistants take full control of grading and never oversees them to a point where the TA's go power crazy and grades extremely harshly. Doesn't listen to students feedback or concerns and just brushes it off because she cant take any drop of criticism. I would rather get hit but a bus dots twice then even retake her class or see her name ever again.

Dr. Wu is extremely nice, but I find this class difficult to succeed in because of her poor lecturing, and poorly written exams. For the past two exams, it felt like I was going in blind because there are no practice exams or problems offered in preparation for the amount of application based questions that there are on the exam. At most, we have two homeworks for each exam (both homeworks have about 2 questions, which is not a lot). Her wording is strange and often makes people overthink the logic behind the question, and I find that that trips me up the most. For example, she'll have a matching response question but all of the definitions sound very similar/vague and you have to pair a term or concept to it (no word bank provided). In terms of lecturing, it feels like Dr. Wu walks into class, rushes through the slides by reading off of them, and then leaves. I'm sure that she is very knowledgeable, but oftentimes, she sounds unsure of the content herself. Overall, it is a hard class to manage due to the structure and lecture style, not so much the content.

Dr. Wu is a great teacher! She truly cares about student learning, and personally hosts office hours every week where students have the opportunity to work through the homework assignments with each other and with her. She didn't test on anything she didn't cover in class, but she does cover a lot in class (and will test on things that she says but aren't written on the slides), so be sure to take thorough notes. The content is dense, but Dr. Wu wants her students to succeed and tries her best to make that happen. The class is dense in content even compared to other upper-level biology classes, but Dr. Wu will work with you to help you succeed if you put in the effort!

Dr. Wu was such a nice professor and you can tell that she really wants you to do well and fully understand the concepts. Her exams being open note is really helpful as it is a great way to make you study by making a notes sheet. She also has lots of extra credit opportunities to help your grade if you struggle a little on the exams because they can be difficult even though they are open note. Dr. Wu is a fantastic professor and if you are considering taking BSCI410 or an upper level biology course, then I would strongly recommend taking BSCI410 with her. I have found that it can be difficult to connect with professors at UMD who teach large courses with many students, and it can be easy to find yourself feeling like just another number associated with a grade on their roster, but it is completely different with Dr. Wu. She is a truly caring individual who wants her students to succeed and she is incredibly generous in terms of the time she commits to her students and her willingness to help students understand the course content and do well in her class. She is an incredibly nice and relatable person who is not intimidating at all which makes the course much more enjoyable, and she makes it very comfortable to reach out to her. Do not be intimidated by some of the reviews on here about her class, BSCI410 with her is incredibly fair and she makes it very possible to do well in her course. As an upper level biology course, BSCI410 has its fair share of challenging content, but if you reach out to Dr. Wu and attend office hours to sure up gaps in your knowledge related to the content then you will definitely do well. The course itself is also extremely interesting for anyone who has an interest in genetics or the life sciences. Some major topics covered in the class include genetic expression and interactions, genetic technologies, and genetic history. Dr. Wu makes these topics extremely enjoyable to learn about through providing fun examples related to the content during lecture and exercises outside of class time that are thought provoking and make you think about how what you are learning can be applied to the world around you. In terms of the graded course content, there are three exams, six homework assignments, twelve post-lecture elms quizzes, in class clicker questions and a handful of one minute essays online. She drops your lowest exam score, lowest homework score, two lowest quiz scores, and two lowest clicker scores, but if you attend office hours and talk to her about topics you are having trouble understanding then these dropped assignments serve more as assurance that you can relax going into the final than as a grade saver. When enrolling in my classes, I had the decision to take BSCI410 with Dr. Wu or another upper level biology course that looked easier but far less interesting and I am incredibly happy that I decided to take BSCI410. If you are reading this review and are on the fence about whether or not you should enroll in this course with Dr. Wu then I hope my review convinces you to go ahead and enroll as it has been one of my favorite classes I have taken at UMD and Dr. Wu is a fantastic professor and an amazing person.

Dr. Wu is fantastic! I never use exclamation points in my writing but I will to describe how great she is! As someone who transferred into UMD from a much larger school, one of the hardest adjustments was going from having professors who took time to get to know all of their students and encourage them to professors with class sizes of 100+ who's students seemed like they were just names on a roster associated with a grade. Dr. Wu was that rare exception at UMD when it comes to courses with large class sizes. She is a truly caring and generous individual in terms of how she treats her students and the time she dedicates towards helping them succeed. If you put in any effort to attend office hours and get to know her, you will see what I mean. She is so welcoming that it made reaching out to her for help not only easy but enjoyable. As a 400 level bio course, molecular genetics can be intimidating in terms of the scope of the content, but Dr. Wu made the class a wonderful experience. She provides the class with examples to the content that are fun and memorable in a way that makes a 75 minute class fly by. While some of the reviews here talk about the class being difficult to follow, I found it to be very possible to do well on her exams, and in the course in general, if you just put in a little extra effort outside of class to dig into the content of the course and do some background reading (which you can easily do while attending office hours and also receiving extremely helpful feedback from her). As I mentioned, it is a 400 level course with a wide scope of content so its not one where you can just skim through the lecture slides and expect to do well. I was guilty of that going into the first exam and was initially intimidated by the course after getting my first exam score back, but I started to go to office hours and reach out to Dr. Wu for help, which she gladly provided in a way where the gaps in my knowledge related to course content were easily bridged. I took this course as an upper level elective requirement and was initially torn between taking this course or a much easier course that would have fulfilled the same requirement (but looked much more boring), I ended up choosing to take this course and I am extremely happy that I did. If you have any interest at all in not only genetics, but the life sciences in general, then I would strongly recommend taking this course with Dr. Wu. Some examples of major topics covered in this course include genetic expression and interactions, DNA technology, genetic recombination, genetic testing, and genetic history. In terms of the actual course work and exams, opportunities for points in the class included 6 homework assignments (the lowest score of which is dropped), 12 quizzes on elms (the lowest two scores are dropped), clicker questions in class (lowest 2 are dropped), one minute essays which do not take long and cover fun concepts in the class, and 3 exams (with the lowest exam score being dropped). The assignments for the course are not overwhelming at all, just make sure your are taking the time to understand why questions on the quizzes, homework's, and in class clickers are being asked and how they relate to the course material rather than just answering them for the sole purpose of getting points. The exams contain a wide range of content but they are open note and if you take the time to organize your notes and understanding of the concepts rather than just copying down the lecture slides then they are extremely manageable and you will do amazing in the class. There are also plenty of opportunities in the class for extra credit (but if you follow my advice for the course in terms of how to approach the homework's quizzes, and exams, then these points will most likely serve as assurance that you can skip the third exam and still get an A rather than a grade-saver :-)). I hope my review of BSCI 410 with Dr. Wu will convince some of you reading this review who are on the fence about whether or not you should take this course to go ahead and take the leap and enroll in it as it was one my best experiences at UMD and I am extremely happy that I decided to take it myself.

Dr. Wu is one of the nicest professors I have taken a course with. She is always willing to help in office hours and on piazza. She makes the exams open note so as long as you pay attention in class and organize your notes before the exam, the exam is fair. Exams are open-note, she's very accessible through office hours, and there are many extra credit opportunities. If you are registered for this class, I recommend getting a head-start on homework, because some questions can be difficult, but Dr. Wu is always willing to walk you through the problem. Although a lot of the material was hard to understand, Dr. Wu is very helpful in explaining concepts if you ask for help. She is also one of the most accommodating and kindest professors I have taken. She provides tons of resources to study/learn from and many opportunities for extra credit which helped my grade. Yes, the material is difficult to understand at times, but such is expected from an upper-level bio class. Some of the lectures are confusing, but rewatching recorded Zoom lectures, reading the textbook, and asking Dr. Wu questions during office hours/after class, made the class much easier. Dr. Wu was very approachable when I asked for help, making it easier for me to ask questions and ultimately get a better understanding of the material. The wide range of topics in the class are interesting to learn about and Dr. Wu actively makes an effort to make the class more engaging, relevant, and humorous for students. The class structure is also great. The homework assignments were challenging but manageable, the 1 min essays and quizzes were easy, and the exams were open-note (and you can drop the lowest exam out of 3). The clicker questions were kind of hard at times, not a fan of those. There were also many extra-credit opportunities. Ultimately Dr. Wu was an amazing professor for BSCI410, I would recommend taking her.

I took BSCI410 with Dr. Wu this past semester and definitely enjoyed it. Dr. Wu herself is very kind and helpful. In terms of the class, there is definitely a lot of content so some reviewing outside of class each week will definitely go a long way, but Dr. Wu gives many resources to make this possible. Lectures were recorded on Zoom, exams were open note, and there are many smaller assignments which are a good check to make sure you understand individual topics. There are also many opportunities for extra credit towards the end of the semester. She also is very helpful during office hours for going over material or clarifying for other assignments. She has all of the good qualities you'd want from a professor: kind, personable, etc. Can she teach? Absolutely not. This is coming from someone who did far better than the average on the first exam. She seriously needs to tidy up her lecture slides and condense the course contents to be more thematic and actually integrate information together. Her class is currently a brain dump of information which is why she probably allows for open notes. Good luck flipping through those 90 pages of notes. Dr. Wu, if you're reading this, I know you have the potential to be a great professor. Please condense your class and make it more thematic and review your slides beforehand, so it's not a bunch "ums and uh's". Additionally, have course CONCEPTS not random tidbits of info. If you begin to focus on concepts and actually give many questions surrounding that content, we may actually leave this class with some core ideas about molecular genetics and not a bunch of factoids of information about random ideas in the class. Get rid of open-note because it almost incentivizes you to brain dump info when it's completely unnecessary. TLDR I might end with an A in this class, but I can certainly say this class is unorganized and the professor lacks teaching skills.

I feel like most of these reviews are very misleading. The review posted on 5/15/2022 is probably the most accurate representation of what this class really is. Is she a nice person? Yes. Is she a good professor? Absolutely not. We've been taking this class for about a month now, and we have unanimously agreed that no one understands what is going on. She is not particularly good at lecturing material in a logical, orderly, and cohesive manner, so by the time lecture is over, you are even more confused than you were at the start. I genuinely have no clue what my grade will be in this class because the first exam was a disaster even though it was open note. That being said, extra credit may be a grade boost, but I cannot say for sure. I would not recommend you take this class, or at least take it with this professor.

BSCI410 with Dr. Wu is one of the best upper level biology classes that you can take. Not only is the material interesting and relevant, but Dr. Wu is a great professor. She makes the material accessible by offering ample office hour time and uploading the notes and lecture recordings. She is also a generous grader. She drops several of the assignments, so if you do not do well on one you have several other chances to make it up (she also has extra credit!). Like any bio course, you will have to put your share of the work in, but taking 410 with Dr. Wu is one of the best choices you can make.

Professor Wu was very sweet and accomodating all semester long! She gave extra credit opportunities and posted old lecture videos from a previous semester which I think helped a lot with reviewing! You get to drop one exam and there are a bunch of homework assignments. Overall, great class and a great professor!

The material in BSCI410 can definitely be challenging, but Dr. Wu wants her students to succeed and makes herself available to help. She cares that you actually understand the material instead of just memorizing for an exam (exams were open note/open book). There were several opportunities for extra credit and the option to drop the lowest exam score really helped take some pressure off. I appreciated the flexibility she provided, with recorded lectures as a supplemental resource. Dr. Wu was also very receptive to student feedback and suggestions, and overall is a understanding and caring professor :)

Dr. Wu is a great professor! She encourages learning and critical thinking. Her classes are lectures heavy, however, there are recordings of her lectures you can watch to understand the material more in-depth. She is very understanding and accessible in class if you have homework questions, test questions, or lecture questions. I recommend taking her because she is understanding and you are able to have the proper support/resources to do well in the class. There are also buffer points such as clicker questions, drop an exam, homework assignments, and an extra credit project about current molecular genetic research. 10/10 recommend!

Ok, so here's the thing. Louisa Wu is the sweetest nicest person. However. She is a really bad teacher. Every single class she forgets the material that she is teaching and seems to display a lack of understanding on the subject. Quotes such as "huh, I should have reviewed my slides better," or "I'm pretty sure I explain this in my notes..." are frequently heard in the classroom while she is unable to recall the material that she is supposed to be teaching. Very often I will leave after class, rewatch the recorded lecture twice and I will still not think it makes sense, because she lacks clarity and organization. After the first exam, I walked out of the classroom entirely unsure of how I did because I felt like I had zero grasp on any of the material. I ended up getting a ~180/200 which was nearly 30 points above the average, which made me wonder: If I had zero grasp on the material, and got that score, then what was wrong with the test? Or maybe the entire class had so little understanding of the material also because of the class. I'm not sure. Anyway, I feel bad saying this, because she's super nice and accommodating, but she is simply not a good teacher.

Dr. Wu is such a nice and caring professor who wants nothing but the best for all of her students! The content was definitely dense but the fact that she offers open note exams, extra credit, and allows you to drop an exam and multiple assignments shows that she really wants us to succeed! Easily my favorite professor during my time at UMD and most of the time we spent talking was about our families, Netflix shows, and how Dune is the best book series ever made (lol). Awesome course with a lot of super interesting information and I definitely recommend Dr. Wu!

Dr. Wu is kind, patient and cares about the success of her students. Go to lecture, review all of the material, attend office hours and you will do well. The homeworks are challenging but help you learn the material. 100% recommend her if you are going to take molecular genetics. Ask for help if you need it, and she will be there.

As long as you attend lectures and keep up with material you should do well in the course. Make sure to review the exam review slides to know what topics will be tested on the exam. Dr. Wu is easy to talk to and very understanding. If you any questions or concerns she is always willing to help. She also provided lecture recordings in case you missed a lecture or need to go back and review material. I appreciated the extra credit assignments given and the opportunity to drop one exam to help your grade. Overall, I enjoyed taking the course.

Dr. Wu is one of the most responsive professors in the bio dept; she responds really quickly (and nicely!) via emails if you ever have a question. The course is pretty content-heavy and you learn a lot in a short amount of time, so office hours and reviewing lecture recordings are recommended. Exams are hard but fair- go to office hours early!

Dr. Wu is a great professor! Her lectures can move a bit fast, but if you ever have any questions she is always happy to help. Not only that, she would provide the lecture recordings which was great to rewatch in case you miss any details. When I took the class, the lowest grade out of three exams (two exams and a final) was dropped and she offered extra credit which was a plus. Of course, the class is not super easy since it is an upper level, but if you put in the work and ask questions when you are confused, you should be fine. Overall, I would say it was a great class to take.

Dr. Wu is a very caring person and the most willing to help professor that Ive had so far at UMD. The content in BSCI410 was challenging but her putting up the notes on ELMS helped alot and there was plenty of office hours. Her and the TAs respond to emails very fast so its easy to get help on content/ HW when you are stuck. When I took it online you were able to go back and rewatch lectures which was definitely a positive. She offers extra credit for group work and other assignments and is very transparent in how the grading is done in the class. Make sure that if you have questions, ask Dr. Wu or the TAs and they will 100% help you anything. I would take this class again.

Dr. Wu is such a caring person and she is one of my favorite profs at UMD. BSCI410 can be challenging in terms of content, but Dr. Wu does a lot to help students do their best. Lecture slides are posted and lectures were recorded, which made exam review a lot easier. Dr. Wu can go quite fast in class, so watching the recordings helped me go back and re-listen to different slides. Also, Dr. Wu is really great at answering questions in office hours or over email. Also, there are a few extra credit opportunities that I highly suggest taking advantage of because they really helped me in the end. Overall, if you study hard, ask questions in office hours, and do the extra credit, you can get an A in BSCI410.

Dr. Wu is a super caring professor and tries really hard not to overextend material onto her students esp in how a tough a time the pandemic has been. Her wording during lectures can be a little confusing at times, but for a 400-level professor she's extremely available and makes it easy for students to ask questions during office hours and before and after class to clarify material. The material at the beginning can be kind of dense, but she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities (which involve fun real world applications) to boost up your grade. It's definitely not easy material, but Dr. Wu does her best to make it relatively easy to get a good grade.

Dr. Wu was a really nice person, but her teaching can be kinda confusing at times. You definitely need to review the course material again after class or read the textbook to fully understand everything. You can get an A in this class, but you will need to work for it. It is not an easy A by any means. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and little assignments that can boost your grade. Going to office hours really helped me to clear up some of the confusion I had during lecture and Dr. Wu was always welcoming and willing to help during office hours. I struggled in the beginning of the class, but I really enjoyed it by the end.

I absolutely love Dr. Wu! She is by far the sweetest professor I've had so far at UMD and she's very knowledgeable about her field. Genetics is one of my favorite subjects, so I was heavily inclined to take this class and I'm really glad I did! Having said that, I will say though that the material for this class (and generally speaking for BSCI410) can be fairly difficult to understand initially - if genetics isn't one of your strongest areas, I'd recommend reviewing a bit beforehand as a refresher on the content! Personally, I struggled a bit with the material at first since a lot of new concepts/techniques were discussed, but Dr. Wu helped clarify/answer so many of questions at office hours and on piazza - so my advice: TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THOSE OFFICE HOURS and ask as many questions as you need until you understand the concepts. The homeworks and exams are challenging to do, but they really test on your understanding of the material rather than just straight up memorizing facts and numbers. You can drop an exam, a hw, and a few quizzes. She offers a bit of a curve (one of the few professors to do so in a 400 level biology course) and extra credit opportunities, so if your grade isn't in the best spot rn, don't panic :) It's not an easy course, but it's DEFINITELY possible to get a good grade. TLDR: HIGHLY recommend Dr. Wu, but you really need to study and put in the effort if you want an A.

The class was one of the most interesting upper level bio classes I've taken and I enjoyed having Dr. Wu as the professor. It's not an easy class (as one would expect for a 400 level), but she truly wants her students to succeed and offers plenty of chances to boost your grade through clickers, short quizzes, homeworks, extra credit, and even dropping your lowest scores. Dr. Wu is very knowledgeable about the content and super helpful at her office hours, as even a simple 5 minute conversation with her on several instances greatly improved my understanding of the more difficult concepts. Take it from someone who got a better grade in this class than BSCI222 when I say that I honestly think Dr. Wu gives everyone a fair shot to earn an A if you are willing to work for it.

I have taken BSCI410 with her, and I cannot tell how bad it was. She has no idea what she is teaching- slides are not organized and you have to read the textbook in order to understand something in her class. Some materials that we have learned from previous courses, she teaches in a way that you get confused, and in the middle of the lecture, every 5 min she says, I believe, I think, I am not sure.....then why do you teach this course? Homeworks are from articles, and much beyond the materials, you learn. The deadlines are crazy- no fixed deadlines for this class- you need to hire someone just to keep track of the deadlines in this class. The worst class in UMD. My GPA is 3.9 and this class makes no sense to me. Good luck! if you care about your grades or you want to learn something! don't take her.

Dr. Wu is definitely my favorite professor so far- she goes out of her way to make herself super accessible for office hours (which were moved to Zoom) because she really cares about her students. The information is definitely not easy but she doesn't expect you to memorize facts- as long as you get general mechanisms/concepts down you should be good. Her exams are really similar to her homeworks which makes studying a little easier. But there is a good amount of work in this class (clickers (basically participation), mini short answer questions, quizzes, homeworks, and exams) so definitely NOT an easy A. But if you're willing to put in the effort and watch the lectures and go to office hours, you're in good shape to do well.

Dr. Wu is a good professor and actually wants her students to succeed and understand the material. Her lectures are sometimes difficult to understand ( it is a tough topic overall), but she is very helpful during in-office hours. She is really nice, but to get a good grade, you really need to know how to apply the material. Dr. Wu is always reachable and is willing to help you understand the material at hand. She is caring about her students and also really want them to understand the material at hand. It is a hard class so you need to understand the material and be able to apply it to her assignments she gives out (HW and Exams). Overall Dr. Wu is a good professor.

She was an amazing professor for BSCI410. She was able to easily communicate the topics of the class and go into detail during her lessons. At times she does tend to talk very quickly but if you ask she will always slow down and re explain anything you don't understand. She is very approachable after class and during office hours to go over anything that you didn't understand during class. She also curves a lot and gives back points when she feels that they are deserved and she made a mistake or did not communicate something to the full extent.

Very ineffective professor. She was very rude, passive aggressive, and stubborn. When I asked her for feedback on questions on exams, she wouldn't be able to provide solid answers to why she docked points, and would provide convoluted answers to questions because she herself did not know the answers. Throughout lectures, her most used phrases include: "I don't know", "I'll have to look that up", "Umm....", and "I'm an expert on flies, not mammals". This is a genetics class, and she doesn't understand the material she is supposed to teach. The only thing I can say to students taking her class is good luck, the only thing that will save your grade is the textbook. And even then, the exam questions will be full of curveballs.
