i ended off with a 94% and didn’t get the book because of financial reasons. i loved my TA and thought Dr. Wu was fun to listen to. as someone who dropped their sphl major too late into the class, it was hard to get through bc i didn’t need to take this class at all. but honestly it wasn’t that bad and the group project was fine as long as you go to office hours and ask the TA what they’re looking for. there’s also individual projects that help. rating 5 stars to boost her rating bc a lot of you are exaggerating it lol it was annoying but you can definitely get through it. it also did not take too much time. the weekly quizzes were common sense, but they were worth a lot of your grade so look at the study guide. having the book probably helps?! good luck. |

I despise this class. Shuling Wu is a boring lecturer and the TAs do everything for this class. The quizzes on every Friday discussion are 5 questions, 100 points and can genuinely destroy your grade. If you can get out of buying the textbook, please do because it is the most useless $90 I ever spent. The quizzes are really common knowledge so the textbook is unncessary. |

for context - i'm a junior pre-med who switched into public health science my sophomore but never took any public health classes because I was focussed on finishing all my pre-med requirements first. That led me to being a junior in a 100 level public health course, and let me tell you this class had more assignments than my 400 level biochem class. Every week you were expected to watch like 4 videos BEFORE LECTURE, which I never did not even once. I also bought the 90 dollar textbook, please don't do this, it's only for quizzes worth 2% of your grade. Other than that, the group project was horrible, because my group mates (apart from 1 other person), were largely incompetent. You also have to write a paper at the end that is 4-8 pages, but that's pretty easy. Overall, there are lots of assignments that are graded easily and you get a 100 on most of them, lecture on monday is async so you dont have to do anything, and then on wednesday you have to go and take a selfie to prove you were in class and then do an activity, just go take a selfie at the beginning of class and leave, do the work on your own instead of listening to her yap about useless nonsense. Generally, this 100 level class was worse than my 300 level public health class. |

Extremely inconsiderate professor, had an emergency and turned in an assingment late and went from an A+ to an F. Had to beg for almost a month to get some sort of credit even with documented proof and ended up giving me a 75% penalty. Overall, class is pretty easy but the TAs grade extremely harsh because its enforced by her. By all means DO NOT TURN IN ANYTHING LATE. The late work penalty is crazy and they will not take excuses, so save yourself the trouble and just turn it in. |

i found this class extremely boring and a waste of time. she just reads off the lecture slides (that aren't posted to canvas), makes you submit a selfie to prove you attended lecture, and an in-class "enrichment activity." every discussion is mandatory too since there are weekly quizzes worth 20%; they require lockdown browser and are only open for the first 10 mins of class. fortunately, there are no exams or finals just a big group project and presentation. |

I did not like this class. Wu is nice, but barely teaches the course, and the TA's end up running most of the class anyways. The class is broken up into an asynchronous class one day, in which Wu gives you a long list of lengthy and boring videos, that you can honestly get through the class not watching at all. By like the third week of class I completely gave up on the asynchronous day. Then you'll go to lecture Wednesday, and you have to take a selfie of yourself to prove your attendance (don't ask no one knows why) and you will be given an enrichment activity, which is usually just a short-written answer based on the lecture, and you have until 5 pm that day to submit it. Then you will have discussion, in which you take a weekly lockdown browser quiz, which always had 5 or 6 questions, and were very easy as long as you looked at the study guide before taking it. The semester long group project was fine; however you have to write multiple individual papers for it that were graded pretty harshly, and you will have a group presentation at the end of the semester. There are also the weekly "Cognella" quizzes in which you must purchase an 80-dollar textbook for these quizzes that only make up 2 PERCENT of your grade. Do not make the mistake of buying the textbook, unless you really, really want to understand the course, as the cognella quizzes were helpful for the weekly discussion quiz, but that's it. Overall, this class is not terrible, it is so much work for a 100-level class, and if you are in Kinesiology, it literally serves zero purpose, but you have to take it anyway, so that kind of sucks. You don't need to watch the videos, or do the cognella quizzes, just show up Wednesday and snap your selfie, and look at the study guide before your weekly quizzes and you will do fine. |

The majority of your grade depends on a few projects, which yes, should mean your grade is in your hands, but really it just depends on your TA. I'd say I'm a pretty good student, but still, I struggled with getting an A due to picky grading and unclear directions. The lectures are just a repeat of our asynch material but they're still mandatory. The content isn't difficult at all, I just wish the projects had clearer instructions and more fair grading across the entire section. |

Having a 49 page syllabus (which we had to take a quiz on) pretty much sums up this course. Everything is unnecessarily drawn out. Mondays are asynchronous learning days where you are meant to go through readings and lectures from the textbook, which is just a bunch of copy and pasted ted talks and publications from other people. I started out doing them, but you quickly realize that everything is very repetitive and you can get away with forgetting about them. Wednesdays are your in person lectures. They are particularly engaging and a lot of the information covered is pretty easy to understand. This is also where you go over the topics you "read" and clear up any nuances/misconceptions. Along with the lectures there are Enrichment Activities that are to be completed before 5:00 PM. They are generally 1-2 questions that pertain to whatever topics are being covered. You are better off just doing them in class while the lecture is happening as you don't really miss much from the actual lecture. Fridays are discussion days, and arguably the best part of the course. Your enjoyment of said discussions really comes down to your TA, as they are going to once again go over the stuff you "read" on Monday and the Wednesday lecture, breaking things down a bit more. At the beginning of every discussion, there is a 5 question quiz (with a study guide provided well in advance that ChatGPT can do for you) that must be done on lockdown browser. These quizzes can actually have a big effect on your grade so actually try to do well on them. The last big thing to note is that there is no final for this class. In its place is a 4-8 page Social Justice Paper that you are essentially working on the entire semester, as well as a group project presentation (that is based around the papers you write). So with all this said, make of it what you will. I gave this class 2 stars because it's really tedious and a lot of the work is pretty unnecessary. It isn't like the class is all that difficult, it just doesn't feel or operate like a 100 level class. The canvas is filled with so much stuff that it makes finding certain things you are looking for rather annoying. The grading is also always somewhat harsh for anything that must be APA formatted, so be sure you do EVERYTHING that is required for proper APA style. And for Enrichment Activities, so long as you write something relatively well thought out and answer the question(s) in full, you should be an A- at a minimum. |

This is the worst class and teacher ever. Dont listen to these fake 5 star reviews, this class is pointless and the teacher grades as if her life depends on it. The insane amount of workload for a class that doesn't matter is crazy, a waste of time and effort bc shes just gonna grade it so insanely and tediously. The class is fine its just the professor that is awful. |

She has such an unreasonable late policy and barely teaches. SPHL100 is a stupid class and Wu doesn’t even do anything. The TAs grade everything. Doesn’t have midterms and just stupid a 100pt 5 question multiple choice quiz every week with each question being 20 points…and the stupid “group” assignment. |

Not a bad class, and the workload is not bad although it may seem to be a lot in the beginning of the course. Your typical weekly schedule would consist of: - asynchronous textbook videos+reading and recorded lectures on Mondays - textbook reading quizzes due Tuesdays - synchronous lecture with an in-class assignment and mandatory attendance on Wednesdays - discussion with mandatory attendance on Fridays There are four major group and individual assignments throughout the semester -- completed in steps with some minor assignments to prep us -- but are not hard and should be easy if you make time to do it. The course should be an easy A as long as you show up to the Wednesday lectures (need to submit selfie with in-class assignment as photo evidence) and have a good TA (all of the TAs for SPHL100 seem sweet and should all be fair game). The only downsides are that Wu doesn't have A+ and only A scale for 92.5+ and makes us buy her textbook for $90 only to do the Tuesday reading quizzes... |

SPHL100 is just a mess of a class to start with. Its basically TA run and Ms. Wu doesn't do anything. You just have to go to class and snap a selfie for attendance points and listen to her drone on. Your TA matters more than her so, even though she has a low rating it doesn't really impact your experience in the class but, your TA does. Attendance is also mandatory for all Wednesday lectures and discussion. Overall SPHL100 is a stupid 100 level class and no matter how much effort you put into it, its still stupid. |

Honestly not a terrible class, folks are complaining about the work load but I found it to be quite light. A Cognella quiz with unlimited attempts on Tuesdays, a Wednesday In-class assignment, and a Friday 5 question quiz that you didn't even need to study for because 90% of the time the questions pulled almost directly from the lecture or the Cognella quizzes. The Bad: - The lectures would be dull at points but thats every class - The textbook which comes with the software to take the quizzes is 70$ and I PROMISE you don't need it. It's honestly a slap in the face for buying it because the Cognella quizzes are only worth 1.5% of your grade total... - Shuling doesn't do A+, 92.5% and above is an A... The Good: - CEPH assignments were relatively easy and engaging - No final nor was there any exams - Easy work I maybe put 30-45 minutes of work into the class a WEEK - All the TA's were super chill (Shoutout Hannah, and Wes!!!) - The course work wasn't that difficult by any means |

Literally the dumbest class ever. Way too much work and effort for a 100-level course. Don’t be scared though—you’ll probably still get an A... but at what cost??? Monday is supposed to be for asynchronous lectures, but I only watched them the first week because they were so pointless. Wednesday is an in-person “enrichment activity” that unlocks when class starts and locks an hour after it ends. So you’re just sitting there, trying to block out Shuling’s voice so you can get the assignment done. Actually, scratch that—you can’t even hear her to begin with because, for whatever reason, she refuses to use a mic and thinks her voice is loud enough. Spoiler: it’s not. Then Friday is discussion and a timed quiz that uses LockDown Browser—because apparently this intro-level class thinks it’s a government exam or something. The quizzes are allegedly based on the textbook (which I never touched, because it’s just plagiarized, copy-pasted garbage). I got by just pasting the study guide into ChatGPT and studying from that. You definitely don’t need the textbook—kind of insane that they’re probably profiting off it anyway. The one good thing? My TA. She was amazing. The only time I actually learned anything was during discussion. Most of your grade comes from an 8-page paper and a group project. Oh, and for the group project, you have to dress business casual and be “well groomed”... whatever that means. Just another example of this class trying to act way more important than it actually is. |

If you’re a kinesiology major this is, unfortunately, one of the most irrelevant classes you’ll have to take during your time in the School of Public Health. Like what all the other reviews here say, SPHL100 is a disorganized mess that is somehow simultaneously too much effort for a level 100 class and a class that feels like a complete waste of time and money to take. Mondays are asynchronous, where you’re given a set of “readings” and “videos” to watch from the extremely useless 70$ textbook that they basically coerce you into buying. Side note here: yes– you technically should buy the textbook. Not because it’s useful, because it honestly isn’t, it’s literally a compilation of Ted Talks and papers FROM OTHER PEOPLE that you can FIND FOR FREE ONLINE. They don’t even change the wording, it’s literally copy and pasted into the “textbook,” and honestly I don’t even know how this is legal for them to do. Tangent aside, the textbook has practice quizzes integrated into it that can supplement your grade should you do less well than expected on the other assignments, which can be the deciding factor between a plus or minus if that’s important to you. Wednesdays are “Enrichment Days” where you do written activities that are supposed to be based on the readings you were expected to do on Monday. Honestly, these felt like a complete waste of time as well but the assignments were easy and even if you didn’t do the readings you could still get by with a decent grade. Fridays are probably the best aspect of this class. It’s an in class discussion where you go more in depth about the topics learned about throughout the week. You’ll have to take a timed quiz (which requires a lockdown browser) based on the textbook readings (another reason why it might be beneficial, but the quizzes are mostly common sense), but other than that, it’s actually surprisingly engaging. I had a good TA so it might be a TA-by-TA thing, but overall, Fridays were the most enjoyable for me. Your major assignments are your CEPH project components. It’s a semester-long project where you’ll be assigned to a group in your discussions and choose a Public Health News event to present and write two papers on. The two papers are individual and graded in the same way an exam would be (1st paper is like a midterm, 2nd is essentially the class’s final). However, in addition to these two papers, you also have to do a 10 min presentation on your public health news event in front of your discussion section. I don’t really understand why there is an added presentation component given that the final paper is extremely time-consuming, in addition to having to prepare a prez. right before finals, but who knows. Also, they make it very clear you have to dress business casual for this which just left a bad taste in my mouth because I don’t feel like anything offered in this class warrants like 20% of your presentation grade (which is a major assignment!!!) being based on how you groom yourself, but maybe I’m also just being petty. Overall, a very unenjoyable class I wish I had taken earlier in the year to just get it out of the way as soon as possible. Like I said in the beginning, if you’re a KNES major, this class is going to feel like a slog that’ll leave you questioning why the hell SPH even makes you take it. If you’re any other SPH major, maybe you’ll find more enjoyment and actually find the class valuable. |

For this class, Shuling lectures, but a bunch of other TAs do discussion and grade your work. I haven't experienced her grading my assignments, but she just gives passive aggressive. Also the policies for this class are so dumb and strict for the work to be not that difficult (at least with my TA). You must show up to lecture and submit a selfie or you don't get points and a bunch of other little unnecessary rules. The class is easy but Shuling's rules are annoying. But my TA, Demi, is amazing. |

This TA is very hard to please. She very well educated with multiple Master's Degrees. She expects her students to have that same level knowledge and dedication to the course. I spoke with her for over 3 hours on a paper she thought I did bad on despite giving me a 94%. She makes you work hard for your grade and is very nit picky. I recommend taking another TA for this course unless you have a lot of time to dedicate to this level 100 class. |

SPHL100 Expecting a B+ Anonymous 12/17/2024 |
This TA was, without question, the worst I have ever encountered and completely ruined the course. Her instructions were a mess—vague, contradictory, and so poorly communicated that they left the entire class confused and scrambling to guess what was expected. Her grading was even worse: unnecessarily rude, unconstructive, and downright insulting, with no effort to actually help students improve. She was shockingly unprofessional, dismissive, and condescending, making it unbearable to approach her for help or clarification. Her hostile attitude created a toxic environment that drained any enjoyment or motivation from the class. One student even switched sections just to escape her incompetence. It’s appalling that someone so fundamentally unfit to teach is now becoming a professor. If you have the misfortune of being assigned to her, do whatever you can to avoid her—she will destroy your enthusiasm for the subject and make you hate the course. Absolutely horrendous. I wish so badly I could leave a 0 star review. Wow. |

DO NOT TAKE THIS TA. Cares WAY too much in a way that if another TA graded your work you would be doing much better in the class but since it is her she grades so particularly. SO frustrating, made me hate this class but it is required so there is nothing I can do. If you can STAY AWAY from taking this TA pls. This is a 100 level class and she acts like it is the most important thing in the world. If I could rate 0/5 I would. |
