Dr. Richardson is at the same time down-to-earth and inspirational. Not only were his lectures amazing, the readings required for the class really make you think. This isn't a class that he wants you to just breeze by. This is also boosted by the amazing guest lecturers he brings in, one being the author of one of the readings. Unfortunately he doesn't offer any other classes at the moment, but if so I'd take them in a heartbeat. Take this class. You won't regret it at all.

Amazing professor. Extremely understandable as well. Take her if you get the chance. You can tell she's an advocate for mental health as brings up how professors face stress too, which should be evident, as well. She says you can email her for extensions on assignments or exams if you need extra time or something, and exams are open for a week, typically 2-3 written questions with a length of 240-400 words long. Only 6 assignments, which is 3 exams, 1 final (which isn't bad at all), a presentation you do with a group in class, and a 30 minute (trust me, the time flies by in this) podcast you do with the assigned group you have. Outside of the course logistics, the conversations we would have in class would be funny, as the professors would joke around too (like Drabinski joking around about his sons not getting him McDonalds fries and eating it in front of him), serious (based upon mass incarceration), and interesting. 10/10 course taught by 10/10 professors. You should definitely take any other course with Newby too, as I'd assume her personality and style of teaching is consistent in those courses as well.

This is honestly the worst course I have taken during my time at UMD. First of all, we were required to be reading SIX books simultaneously and somehow know the minute details from them for quizzes and exams, in addition to discussions in lecture. Professor Richardson yelled at the class like we were children after we turned in our first paper because the quality apparently wasn't to his liking. There were three papers but the third one got changed to be a video assignment because a student suggested it...I think it was actually because they were so slow with grading. It took over a month for the grade for the second paper to be returned. We just got it back today after we took the final - five assignments had not been returned when we took the final by the way, not including the quiz they decided not to include in our grade because everyone failed it. At least have of the classes were guest lectures and it seemed like Professor Richardson had given up on teaching himself. The elms messages/announcements were often rude and condescending. I don't think I really learned anything new after the first month. Professor Richardson is very passionate but not a very good teacher and the TA was even worse. The class just seemed so disorganized even though it was not the first time it was being taught. I hated basically every minute of this class by the end of the semester and went into it thinking I was signing up for a fairly easy GenEd that was about a topic I am very interested in. I have not yet received my final grade but went into the class expecting an A and most likely will get a B (which is absolutely ridiculous....and I am a senior, by the way). Do not take this class.
