Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering
Prerequisite: ENES220; and permission of ENGR-Civil & Environmental Engineering department. Introductory study of soils in civil engineering. Soil origin, phase relationships and classification schemes. Soil hydraulics: capillary, effective stress, permeability and seepage considerations. Basic stress distribution theories and soil consolidation-settlement analysis. Integration of shear strength evaluation with slope stability analysis. If time permits, topics such as applications in geoenvironmental engineering will be covered.
