Professor Wong is such a delight. Her class is very straightforward; if you come to class, participate, and complete the assignments you're pretty much golden. There are reflection assignments each week about the assigned readings that are informal and low-stress. The bigger assignments are 4-5 pages and she gives you a list of topics to choose from. She is very accommodating and just an amazing instructor. I highly recommend any class with her!

If I were to use one word to best describe Dr. Levine, it would probably be quirky. But that is not a bad thing at all, it just took some time to get accustomed to his personality and style of teaching. I can see that he may not be some people's favorite professor, but he does really care about his students' comprehension and success. He is absolutely one of the fastest graders I have ever seen (grades within the day, which is especially impressive for papers), and he seems to delight in getting to read his students' work. He is definitely passionate about the material he teaches, and that is hard to not be infectious. Some of the early texts in the 17th century American literature can be a bit slow, but his enthusiasm and interest in itself is a motivator to care about the literature. He is an extremely fair professor who is an expert on what he teaches—he really knows his stuff. There are frequent assignments called reader-responses which are basically comprehension/interpretative checks of a text before the assigned class meeting. I found that once you get into it, they actually become fun and a little space for you to create your own thoughts about the text by simply writing it out. We had two essay assignments, and he allowed either a critical analysis or a pedagogy paper, which was a really interesting alternative that made the paper formatting fun to engage in. All in all, Dr. Levine is a great professor and one that I would definitely recommend!

Professor Levine is... okay. Though the readings can be dry, he's definitely passionate about American literature which helps with the content. He can be a little self-conceited at times which can be really off-putting. Overall, he's certainly not a bad professor, but I'm not planning on taking another one of his classes.

If you want a professor who rolls her eyes at you and speaks to you like you’re 15, take this class! I learned more in one lecture from any of my other professors than in an entire semester from Dr. Underland.

Second half of this course was much better than the first half. His lectures are not attendance mandatory, but you're really missing out if you don't go! He's funny and draws a lot of interesting parallels between works. There are two big papers, a final exam and then you have to write 12 short responses over the course of the semester. The responses can be pretty fun to write, and he reads them all! Overall, he totally earned my respect. I think the TA's can be hit or miss. My discussion section was great, but that's because of the students in it, not so much because of the TA.

Auerbach is a great professor! His lectures are extremely interesting and he seems really down to earth. But it is a difficult class and involves a lot of reading in a short amount of time. Overall though it is a great class and I would definitely recommend it.

Professor Satelmajer is a lot of fun. She really enjoys what she's teaching and the reading selection was mostly really great. The class was really interesting. She tries to assign a doable amount of reading each night and usually it's not too bad. She does have random reading quizzes a lot though so make sure you're on top of the reading she does assign. She's also a pretty strict in grading papers- a lot of the class complained about it. She puts a great emphasis on detail from the reading and on originality of the argument. Her exams straightforward if you pay attention to what she emphasizes in class so make sure you take notes during her class. She also has some optional assignments that help at the end. She's really big on participation too and it really helps your grade! She's really passionate and always around to give help

I really liked Auerbach--had him for a large, lecture class, so I didn't interact with him much one-on-one, but he's brilliant. Assignments weren't too bad (two 5-page papers, a midterm and a final, plus four 2-3 page papers), though the midterm was hard--basically everyone bombed it, but there was an extra credit assignment to make up for some of it. I recommend Auerbach, he was a great professor who provided unusual insight into the texts.
