ENGL344 Expecting an A naonic 12/20/2023 |
he's honestly the best teacher I've had at umd so far. His class was really interesting and it's very discussion based. Be prepared to read a lot (we read six novels and three of them were over 400 pages) but if you can do that then he's definitely worth taking |

ENGL344 Expecting an A- Jessica Lee Archer 12/13/2011 |
This class was very interesting and I would recommend it as an average class in the English dept. The class focused on the role of technology through many interesting books. I enjoyed about half of the books and the assignment load is manageable. If you need a random credit, or course I's say go for it. I was just happy to read Frankenstein... |

This class was not what I expected. It probably should have been titled "Science Fiction and Technology in 19th Century American Literature" instead, and then I never would have taken it. Someone who likes robots and androids would probably enjoy this class more than I did. His focus on technology in each book we read was sometimes a stretch, and the repeated themes definitely got old by the end of the semester. There are online reading quizzes every Sunday night (which makes them easy to forget about), three 2-3 page papers, two 5-7 page papers, and a midterm and final. We read a mix of novels and short stories, some of which were only available online so be prepared to print a lot. Also, he doesn't let you use laptops in lecture, if that matters to you. If you take this class, be prepared to read some pieces of questionable literary value (typos, generally bad writing) because he wanted to emphasize some of the technological/futuristic themes of the course. My TA (Amanda Dykema) was great and I definitely recommend her. Just know what you are signing up for, because I didn't! |
