Do not take him Hardly teaches, very harsh grader and doesn’t tell you the grading rubric upfront, very rude and plays favourites He also speaks way too much English for a French class. If you speak to him in French he responds in English. If I wanted to be spoken to like that, I’d go to Paris, not his class. If you value your comprehension skills and want to enjoy French, do not take him!!!

Not a good teacher Speaks in English for half the class, and it’s a French speaking class. Doesn’t always convey what/how he’s grading, so when he does grade you loose random points and he gives little feedback as to why. I can tell he’s trying to be nice and tries to relate to us, but the execution is not good and he comes off as very uptight

Not a fair grader and is rude when you visit his tutoring hours for help. He gives you sass when you’re confused about something that “you should already know”. He’s a nice guy in class but can be two faced. He also teaches a lot in English, which doesn’t help if you actually want to learn French.

The KINDEST most caring teacher you'll ever meet. You can tell she genuinely cares about the personal and academic success of each of her students. Super down to Earth and she's funny in a very subtle 'dry humor' way. She's a french native so she's a great teacher as well. Chill grader. Sometimes she's not the best at responding to emails but its a small downside compared to a super long list of upsides. Definitely recommend!

Apolline is a super kind, caring, and enjoyable professor! I've enjoyed taking 204 with her so much because she makes fun activities and gives good advice for assignments and the midterm/final oral exams. She is one of the only professors at UMD that I think I will genuinely miss after finishing this semester. The workload can be a lot sometimes (but that's expected for any language class) but she offers extensions and is accomodating for everyone.

A really nice lady but so, so boring. Generally unhelpful, unfortunately. Not a very fun classroom environment at all. We started with probably 15 students and by October I think we were down to 6-- 5 after I withdrew!

Guilhem has honestly been my favorite professor at UMD so far. Especially in the online setting, he was really well adapted and properly planned out every lesson. We had really engaging discussion sections and covered topics that taught us about both the French language and francophone culture. I cannot stress enough how enjoyable this class was. The homework assignments were easy to get through and allowed multiple attempts, as the focus really was learning and not grade anxiety. Seriously a highlight of my undergraduate experience, and I'm not even a French major.

I love this class! Mme Cefalo is absolutely adorable, and she gets so excited about class. She always tells us little stories about herself so we practice comprehension without even realizing it. She gives a lot of group work in class. The test are good- they make sure you know the material but she doesn't throw questions in there just to trick you. Definitely take her class if you can!!!
