Special Topics in Government and Politics; Congressional Investigations and Democratic Governance
Cross-listed with PLCY388M. The course introduces students to the purpose and practice of congressional investigations. Topics covered include: the reach and limits of Congress's constitutional authority to investigate; tools and tactics used in congressional investigations; congressional authority to investigate the executive and judicial branches of government; what constitutes effective oversight; and current challenges to conducting congressional investigations. Class discussion will frame these issues by focusing on the work of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol and other high-profile inquiries, featuring video excerpts and personal perspectives from individuals involved with those efforts. Students will engage in experiential and hands-on learning to understand the subject matter.
