Grant Bollmer

I had Dr. Bollmer for my Design, Cultures, and Creativity class on Games and Gameplay, and honestly loved it. The class was new this year and he had a lot of freedom in the curriculum and design, and it ended up being a very enjoyable experience overall. It was a very small class so we got to know him and each other pretty well, and he was always happy to offer support or feedback on projects. My one complaint would be that he doesn't provide very clear instructions for his expectations on assignments. We were required to turn in our class notebooks occasionally, and he wasn't entirely clear on how in-depth he expected the notes or reflections to be. I figured it out through trial and error, based on the grading. Otherwise, very enjoyable class, Dr. Bollmer is approachable and absolutely supportive if you have any thoughts or issues. |

I took this class (the games elective) in Fall 2024, just never wrote a review until now. Dr. Lu is one of the most thoughtful and earnest professors I’ve ever had. People sometimes get the wrong first impression because she's a yapper, but don't let that scare you. Both in this class and in general, Dr. Lu is a big proponent of value-based design. She has high hopes for DCC students' potential, and I would argue that she's a big part of what makes DCC a design program instead of a typical art program. Assignments for this class were reasonable. There were a few assignments across the semester for an individual game, one final deliverable for a class-wide game, and some reading quizzes during ~half the semester. The readings were sometimes long, but usually skimming was enough to complete the quizzes. There was also an engagement grade, which Dr. Lu liked to describe as “would this class have been the same without you?” As long as you showed your cared about the course content and weren't a dick to anybody, you would have been fine. |

Dr. Lothian's class is one of the few times at UMD where I really felt like I learned something. Thank you for an amazing semester! |
