Professor Kern is highly unprofessional and not a good lecturer. She relies mostly on videos that the previous professor created to teach. She does not answer emails and is passive agressive when students ask clarifying questions. Despite being a 1 credit class, this was the most difficult class I took during my 1st semester.

I recommend actually trying on the diagnostic or using OTHER resources to help you pass the diagnostic. If you do not pass the test, one it will count against you, and two this will be the most stressful one credit class you have ever taken.

Nicki is a really nice professor and she tries to explain the very boring and very tedious material as much as possible. This class is more difficult than it seems, you will question everything you thought you knew about grammar.

I understand that it’s a boring subject so that can make it hard to stay engaged, but this one credit class requires by far the most work of any class I’m taking at Maryland.

Professor Coleman means well, BUT TRY AND TEST OUT OF THIS COURSE. Being online it is horribly taught, and the final is worth 90% of the grade. This led to me giving no effort on the weekly quizzes, and not paying attention in class. Quizzes are nowhere similar to the content in class. AVOID.

Journalism majors are required to take this class if they don't get an 80% or higher on the diagnostic test. I was pretty clueless when it came to grammar and I got a 72 on the diagnostic. I was optimistic about learning about grammar anyways, but it is honestly in your best interest to test out of the class! The weekly quizzes are worth 10%, and the final is worth 90%. This may sound bizarre, but in the end it makes sense. The weekly quizzes test you on very specific grammar rules and very challenging. To be successful on these weekly quizzes, you'll have to put significant effort to really understand the rules, probably as much effort as a 3-credit course. The final is like the diagnostic where you have to know rules like who vs. whom, that vs. which, etc. After taking the course, getting a B or A on the final should not be hard. Coleman herself is very knowledgeable about grammar. The only drawback is that she tries to squeeze so much content into a once-a-week class. She is very helpful outside of class and provides review sessions before the final. This class was a small nuisance, but you do learn a lot about grammar. Just try to test out!

You should work as hard as possible to place out of this class. People who place out of this class and take it for better grammar knowledge end up hating their decision. The concepts are familiar enough, but there just isn't enough time to prepare for each quiz. The class should be 3 credits because it takes 3 credit time and effort to get an A. If you really know grammar the final is suppose to resemble the diagnostic so no worries and quizzes are ten percent of the grade, although the final is ninety. Coleman is a great teacher with a huge challenge. Place out the class, but if you can't study and treat this like 3 credits if you want an A. I hope i get a C.
