Special Topics in Journalism; Media and Human Rights in the Internet Age

Focus is placed on new approaches and new roadblocks to coverage of human rights issues, as journalists and repressive governments develop new strategies to either obtain or suppress information about abuses andpublic protests. We will discuss the evolution of the media's role indocumenting human rights violations, from the U.S. Civil Rights movementto the Arab Spring to contemporary events online and on the ground -- in China, Russia, and the United States. Students will have opportunities to write each week on human rights issues and internet freedom, and to report and write in-depth, publishable articles.
