He is the Ali Ghodsi of UMD CMNS.The best professor and value you can get out of paying your tuition. Yes, you do need a good understanding of fundamental maths for ML to understand his lectures on the run.If you really wish to learn ML in a different perspective ,this is it. Instead of running over the maths and importing libraries ,Prof Babak covers every nook and cranny of the algorithm right from its origin. The key to get more out of his classes is to come prepared very well and ask questions without hesitating. He has never said no for any questions and always takes time, even after class hours to actually clarify the doubts. Understanding the maths he teaches will lay the foundation to literally every advancements in ML/NLP. I'd suggest to anyone who reads this, if ask the people about his lectures they might have varied opinions ,but then it tells more about their approach to ML than his. You can't never run away from maths and Prof Babak exactly takes you there slow and steady.

Don't listen to the other reviews lmao hes great, both exams are open note and homeworks are practical applications into the subject matter. Tons of extra credit (ie quizzes) too, but lectures themselves dive into the math behind the subject matter which is nice but personally, I would have to watch a high level overview of the subject prior to class to get the benefit of lecture. def take babak if you can hes goated

All I have to say is... an amazing professor! She made classes so fun. Very engaging and caring about her students. Whatever she teaches is exactly what she asks in the exams. She gave weekly homework assignments that tested us on what we learned in class that week. The only downside one might point out is that she doesn't provide any study materials (the notes you take in class will be your bible) and she doesn't record her lectures either. So missing a class is missing information.

One of the best professors I've had at UMD. You can tell he really cares about what he's teaching and the success of his students. The homework, term project and exams feel relevant to the course. The exam questions are really fair, you never look at a question and feel surprised and wonder if you learned about the concept. It's a really dense course and some lectures can feel overwhelming but just make sure you show up to class and be an active listener and you'll be perfectly fine.

Too much focus on theory, in a subject which would helped with more practical applications. Deriving multi page formulas was not helpful in any way.
