Special Topics in Persian Studies; Theatre and Performance in Iran

Cross-listed with THET328W. Credit granted for PERS398A or THET328W. Multimedia survey of Iranian theatre and performance traditions from ancient Persia to contemporary Iran. Old performances (oral storytelling, shadow/puppet shows, comic and passion plays) and Western-style theatre and their mutual influence will be examined. Practical information abouthow to write about plays in their contexts, close readings, class discussions, watching performances, role-playing, and creative responseshelp develop analytical and critical skills. The ultimate aim is to examine Iranian theatre s potential in reflecting and changing theway Iranians think, ask questions, and play. Taught in English.
