Special Topics in Latin American Civilization; Understanding Language Communities: Multilingual and Translingual Realities in the Spanish-Speaking World
Globalization facilitates interactions that are no longer restricted by borders or distance and brings people from different backgrounds together. So, how does language operate within this modern era? To what extent are communities defined by language? How does each language preserve its integrity at the same time as opening communities to the wider world? This course will attempt to answer these and other questions from different linguistic, ideological and historical angles, with special attention to the complex relationship between the so-called majority and minority languages in the Spanish-speaking world. Taught in Spanish.
