SPAN448Q
Special Topics in Latin American Civilization; Culinary Landscapes: Food, Sabor and Image in Hispanic Caribbean Texts
Relevant Hispanic Caribbean literary, musical and historical texts display their images in a culinary space. Images of food, but more specifically, of sabor (flavor, taste: a knowledge or sense coming from flavor) work as metaphors, and as landscapes or seascapes, for the configuration of a singular aesthetic, sensible and political experience. Specifically, the course will discuss the corporeal and sensorial realities excited by this culinary imaginary. Issues of identity, race, gender, politics, and literary representation will be discussed, problematized and questioned. Furthermore, during this class we will put in motion our own critical skills while reading or listening to texts or cultural objects produced in a Hispanic Caribbean society. Students will be expected to participate actively in class, give an oral presentation, write short essays and a final research paper, and complete miscellaneous assignments.
