Seminar: Theatre History; Extraordinary Bodies on Display: Theater, Freak Shows, and Ethnological Show Biz

Pairs historic para-theatrical performance modalities such as court masques, ethnological exhibition, and freak shows with contemporary texts by disabled playwrights and playwrights of color to parse how the theatrical tools of spectacle, exhibition, and display have been used throughout history to signify, (re)claim, and contest the bodily meanings of race, ethnicity, and disability. Emphasis on intersectional modes of analysis.
