Dr. Chester is an incredible professor and very knowledgeable on the topic of Latino/a studies; he was a great introduction to the minor and the lectures every class are interesting and relevant to the four major writing assignments for the course. He is very accommodating and if you need to revise your essay, he will review it with notes before the due date; and provides extensions if needed. Participation is a big part of the grade as well but it’s not hard, you just have to contribute to class and there are optional extra participation opportunities for your grade out of class sometimes. Highly recommend!!

I highly recommend Dr. Chester as the best professor to choose for a Latinx course. He is passionate about what he teaches and loves to engage with his students. Although participation is essential, it is not difficult to accomplish. The course involves reading the assigned articles or watching two movies and discussing them in class. There are four essays in total, including two shorter writing assignments and two longer essays. Dr. Chester is very flexible and understanding when it comes to due dates. He provides sufficient time to complete the assignments, but if students need more time, they can always email or talk to him about it. Overall, Dr. Chester is an amazing professor who I would recommend to other students. I would also encourage students to take other courses he offers.

Nice woman, knowledgeable in her field, but TERRIBLE teacher. In a way I admire her, because she takes on so much, and tries to give her all to everything that she is involved with, but I definitely think that her busy life puts a strain on her teaching, and therefore her students. She never returns grades, and if she does, its near the end of the semester. She expects way too much and assigns a ton of readings that she never goes over in class, then expects you to write details about the readings in essay form on the exams. My biggest issue with her though, was her lack of organization. A typical day in her class was: She'd come into class 10 minutes late, then want to discuss some speaker or event that had nothing to do with the class. Then someone would ask a question and she'd spend 20 minutes answering it. Once she realized that she had 5 minutes or less left in class, THEN she'd pull up a powerpoint and attempt to teach, meaning that we never got anything useful out of her sporadic, all-over-the-place lectures. She never had a lesson plan, and we didn't even get a chance to get to all of the material. But she does take attendance for participation grade. The times that she did manage to get out some teaching, I did learn interesting information about the US Latino culture. It opened my eyes as a non-Latino to the struggles they face. We had to plan, coordinate, and initiate a tour of the Latino history in D.C which took up a lot of class time and all of one Saturday. It was fun I guess, but for all the time it took up, I didn't learn much. You have to watch a hour+ long movie every other week and post on it, plus the occasional pop quiz, and exams that require you to write 4 essays in 50 minutes. And like I said, she doesn't return grades and is not very responsive to student concerns. None of this is against her personality though. She's a nice woman, and is knowledgeable about her subject, but leaving readings and videos to teach her students makes her a terrible teacher.

Dr. Rodriguez is an unique and intellectual professor. Honestly, she may be the best professor I've had my whole college career. USLT has a heavy workload though, but its so interesting that it doesnt seem that bad. We have alot of readings, we went to the smithsonian, and saw many documentaries at hornbake (outside of class). Her class is mostly discussion, rather than lecture. Her teaching style is very helpful in understanding the material. Go to every class, she does take attendance. Overall, its alot of work, but if you are truly interesting in learning latino studies, take her class, you'd be able to handle it! I plan on taking 202 with her!

Dr. Rodriguez is very knowledgable in her field of expertise. She brings her own insight to the class as she is an American Latino. Even though I am not Latino, I felt welcomed in the class and learned much about a culture I did not know about. The class has required attendance and is often times discussion based. Many good debates and insights are brought upon by the students and Dr. Rodriguez encourages it. There is a moderate amount of reading to do although the readings are easy to comprehend. There are also many movies to watch in dial access. If you go to class and do all your work and outside readings, you will do decently.
