HIST483 Expecting an A- Anonymous 12/02/2024 |
Dr. Choi is one of the best professors in the History department at UMD. He is incredibly knowledgeable on Modern Japanese History and he is clearly passionate about what he is teaching us. I did not have too much prior knowledge on Japanese History before taking this class but Dr. Choi's class has taught me more than I ever could have imagined about Japanese History in an impressively short amount of time. For this class, Dr. Choi ensured that we visited the George Prange Collection at Hornbake which was awesome. He is incredibly patient if you have a question and understands that not everyone has done extensive work with Japanese History. I would 100% take this class again and would highly recommend taking Dr. Choi. |

HIST483 Expecting an A- Maryunya 11/24/2024 |
Dr. Choi was an amazing professor for Modern Japanese History. Very knowledgeable about the content and enthusiastic about the week's content, with seminar-style classes every Thursday (it was a Tuesday + Thursday class this semester). Pros: - Will often go more in-depth about certain topics if you ask questions/clarification in lecture - He is very chill and patient when it comes to answering questions and gives additional resources for research - Gives good feedback on assignments and mentions what you did incorrectly and how you can improve for later assignments. - In terms of class style, one day is about learning the content and the other is a seminar based on the readings for the week. - No final exam for the class, instead we had a final research paper and presentation. - Very flexible on when you can present your research presentation, as three of the last five weeks of the semester are dedicated to the presentations. Cons: - Your grade is almost dependent on 9 things, which are the WWII review essay (15%), the research project proposal (10%), your research presentation (10%), your final research paper (60%), and 5 weekly discussion posts (5%). This adds a note: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THOSE WEEKLY DISCUSSION POSTS AS THEY ARE GRADED ON COMPLETION INSTEAD OF ACCURACY! IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING IN THE CLASS, DOING THEM CAN MAKE A VERY BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 'D' AND A 'C-'! Every few weeks, he will release a discussion prompt regarding one of the readings for Thursday's seminar, as long as you follow the prompt and demonstrate an understanding of the clearer picture of the readings, they should be very easy to complete. Additionally, there are 6 weekly discussions, but only 5 will count towards your grade. - In terms of content covered, we only covered up to the mid-1970s, as we didn't have enough time to cover Japan's "Lost Decade" or the Heisei and Reiwa periods. |
