Explores the Japanese Empire from 1894 to 1945. In addition to tracing the rise and fall of Japan's empire, it will seek to identify the agents of empire, understand the role of pan-Asianism, and, among other topics, explore the policies of colonial rule and its outcomes, especially colonial modernity. Global and comparative perspectives will also be pursued.
