ENME690 Expecting an A- Anonymous 05/31/2023 |
There is a lot of reading off of slides in this course, but Dr. Dasgupta is a pretty knowledgable person in electronic devices and reliability. He is very approachable and helps you out with any doubts you have. A course-long project involves taking apart an electronic device and looking into its internal components, such as the material used in solder joints, type of packaging, etc. Overall, its a decent course. |

ENME473 Expecting a B+ Anonymous 12/12/2022 |
Dasgupta is very passionate about this subject, but I just want to caution anyone reading this thinking about taking 473. 473 is a very boring class, and is really more of a vocabulary memorization class than anything else. There's only 6 relatively easy homework assignments, 1 mid-term, 1 class project for undergrads, a 2nd project for grads, and a final exam. The mid-term you get a 2 page DIY formula sheet that you can put anything on. The test itself had 1 calculation on it that was worth maybe 10% of the grade, the rest was reciting acronyms, listing pros/cons of different technologies, listing off manufacturing steps, and identifying parts based on pictures. This may sound easy, but there is an insane amount of material to cover and you won't possibly be able to fit enough on the formula sheet. I believe there was a massive curve or the grading was extremely lenient on this. I know for a fact that I did poorly on the test but somehow got a B. The course project is easy if you make it easy, but if your group picks a hard device to disassemble and "redesign" you can make way more work for yourself. As it is, the group sizes are way too large and not everyone will really be able to participate. We had 6 in our group, and 3 of us basically did nothing, because only 1 person per group can go to the lab. Which brings up my primary issue with this course. It's supposed to be about mechanical design of electronic systems. But there's no hands on portion to this class at all, unless you're a grad student with CALCE lab access. The lectures are basically straight vocabulary and lists, while the homeworks are a handful of simple stress/strain calculations. If you're searching for something groundbreaking or interesting, I'd suggest going elsewhere. Also grading took an absolute eternity in this class. We didn't get mid-term results back until a week before the end of the semester. |

The man. Really excellent lecturer, he puts in a lot of effort to be prepared for class and delivers interesting content. He's an expert in the field. Make an effort to ask questions and you'll get back ten times what you put in. He definitely is a harsh grader though. But I was able to get an A because he saw me patiently in so many office hours and he always responded to my emails and such. |

ENAE202 Expecting an A- Anonymous 12/16/2019 |
I took the ENAE version of this class but it is the same as the ENME version. Dr.Dasgupta is very understanding and wants to work with you so you can succeed. The lectures were engaging and interesting. All his lecture notes were posted online so you could easily follow along. I have accommodations and needed special help for the studios and he was very helpful in getting me the help I needed to succeed in the class. |
