HIST261 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 12/15/2023 |
Dr. Dorner is such a great professor. I don't usually like history, I was just taking it as a gen-ed, but he is so passionate about the topic and it made me want to learn it more. He is super chill and doesn't assign much work. There is a weekly reflection but it's super short and easy. A few bigger assignments throughout the year but they are not bad at all. Attendance is not mandatory but participation does count towards your grade so I recommend showing up, the lectures are not hard. Overall, recommend taking a class with Dr. Dorner, he is great. |

He does take attendance but it'a easy class. If you need credit for graduation just take his class, no homework, just a 200 words reflection after class every week and 2 exam, very chill dude. |

Dr. Dorner is by far the most accommodating and kind professor that I will ever have, I'm sure of it. He teaches the material in a very engaging and interesting way, and allows us to think richly about the subject matter. UH is a joke, but this class makes the entire citation worth it. Seriously. His assignments were very loosely restricted, and you essentially just need to demonstrate some level of understanding and consideration of the course material to get an A on the assignment. For the UH class, he was a super lenient grader, and he never gave failing grades to anyone-- that's why the grade data is so unbelievable for his courses. He teaches in a very student-focused manner and his ultimate goal is that his students succeed. Everything about this professor, his class structure, his teaching style, his assignments, and his grading are fair, kind, and made it all worth it. |

As with most people here, I am not a history fan and think that most honors classes haven't actually taught me much, but I really wanted this course as an easy gened. When I actually got to class, Prof. Dorner made everything so much more engaging: we really analyze and think critically about old documents, and think about what the knowledge and data from those sources really is. We get into the information age later in the course, and the topics taught about history are relevant there too. He gives a lot of talking points and is always ready to have something to say, and is always supportive of our ideas. The fact that we got to choose our own topic to research at the end was really awesome too, because I finally got to research things I'm interested in and discuss them in the perspective of this class. Lastly, the assignments in this class are very straightforward and open-ended, so really as long as you bring up points from discussions and lectures, the assignments are graded leniently. Overall, Prof. Dorner just knows how to run a class and get people engaged and caring, and this is easily one of the classes I cared about the most this semester. |

I am not exaggerating when I say that Professor Dorner is one of the best professors I have had at UMD. This review is a bit late, as I had his class in Fall 2021, but judging from the rest of the reviews, he hasn't changed. I was a bit nervous going in, because I'm not the biggest fan of history, but the way Professor Dorner presented the material in an engaging way made it an enjoyable experience. We has a lot of "round table" discussion where there were no right or wrong answers, as long as you could provide some reasoning as to why you thought a particular way. The projects were actually quite fun to do and unorthodox, but in a good way. I could go on and on, but the main point is, if you can: take this class with this great professor. |

I have always hated anything related to history or reading because I never really found myself at all interested in the subject, so I went into this course expecting to hate it. However, Dr. Dorner is probably one of the best teachers I have ever had period. He makes topics clear and intresting and is a very understanding person and being in his class makes you want to participate. If I could give him more stars I would. Absolutely a 12/10 professor. |

I hate the honors program and all of the classes I have taken have been a complete waste of my time. HOWEVER, this class was the one exception. It was very engaging, interesting and was one of the only classes I looked forward to going to. Professor Dorner is awesome; he is very quick to respond to any questions, super flexible with your schedule, and makes class fun. If you need to get that dumb certificate take this class it is awesome. - max Carreras |

Dr. Dorner is an amazing professor. He is extremely understanding and makes the class overall a wonderful experience. The workload is very light and the class is overall more of a discussion. Dr. Dorner is very engaging and like to start the class with casual conversation. We always start class with typical on something random, from basketball to ChatGPT. Compared to the A section of the course, 258A, this class is infinitely more interesting and mentally stimulating. The conversations and topics we discuss in class are actually interesting and are topics that I can actually some what relate to. Dr. Dorner is also a very funny relatable guy. He talks to his students about his own personal life and makes the instructor of the course be more relatable. This fact alone has made me actually want to show up to class. |

Dr. Dorner is a great guy and really cares a lot about his work and the class material. He is totally respectful of the lives of students outside of class, in terms of the work that he assigns and expects for class. I enjoyed going to his class, and they were all engaging with great examples and histories that felt relevant. As someone who has just completed the UH citation, this was definitely my favorite UH class, and would definitely recommend taking it if Dr. Dorner is teaching it. |
